2011 DirectorY of bulk handlinG

ABHRs directory of bulk handling engineering firms is aimed at those companies planning a bulk handling project. This could be the design and installation of a new overland conveyor at a mine, or the upgrading of chutes and transfers at a terminal. It could also take in a nest of new silos at a grain handling facility, bulk handling systems at a sugar or cement plant, or a pneumatic system at a plant handling plastics or food powder. The list includes those firms offering design and consulting engineering services, as well as some related activities such as EPCM. On page 70, the directory also includes entries for firms that provide engineering solutions tending more to equipment supply and services. If your firm has been unjustly omitted, or you can suggest improvements to the format and content, please contact me in confidence on telephone (02) 9080 4443 or email charles.macdonald@informa.com.au

Consolidation continues among engineers

Recent moves by Calibre on Minerva and KBR on Roberts & Schaefer show that consolidation is still playing out among engineering firms focussed on mining and bulk handling.

inerva Engineers grew fast since its founding by Gary James, Paul Leitinger, Peter Dawson, Cameron Bain and Colin Preston in 2005. The privately-owned Melbourne-based firm had increased to 70 employees, prior to Calibres takeover in June 2011. Calibre, a mining-focussed EPCM firm, in turn has grown exponentially. Founded by Ray Munro and David Walker in WA in 2002, the firm has mushroomed to around 1,300 staff. US private equity firm First Reserve, along with Connect Resources Services of Brisbane, took a majority stake in Calibre in 2010. Prior to that, the firm signed-up well-credentialed mining executive Rod Baxter, latterly chief executive of manganese and nickel miner Consolidated Minerals, as managing director in 2009. Baxter announced bold expansion plans, particularly on the east coast and in the civil sector. At the time of the Minerva takeover, Calibre said in a statement that The agreement to acquire the privately owned Minerva is another key step in Calibres Australian expansion drive, providing Calibre with a strategic foothold into South East Australia. Minerva won some major contracts in mining and materials handling engineering and design, with a client list including BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, FMG, Leighton Contractors, Bechtel, Newcrest, Newmont, Port Waratah, Barrick Gold and MMG.

Rod Baxter, said: This is a very strategic acquisition which provides Calibre with the opportunity to leverage Minervas engineering expertise and associated market reputation; build a presence in Melbourne to service South Eastern Australian market opportunities; increase the depth of resources and capability available to our clients; and broaden Calibres client base. It follows our acquisitions over the last six months of Brisbane-based engineering and project delivery service provider Joharko, and more recently, mining and geological consulting firm Xstract Mining Consultants. The Texas-headquartered KBR acquired Chicago-based Roberts & Schaefer Company in December 2010 for around $280m. Roberts & Schaefer was a major EPC provider to the bulk material handling and processing sectors, with a global network of offices, including in Brisbane. It also owned Soros, a provider of material handling solutions for port and marine applications. We are pleased to add the capabilities and talented staff of Roberts & Schaefer to KBR. This acquisition enhances our strategy to be a leading services provider in commodity markets and... enables KBR to significantly broaden our services offerings to a wide range of commodity, material handling and process customers, said William P. Utt, KBR chairman, president and chief executive.
