My research is focused on combining different types of geophysical data in order to improve the imaging of Earth. This involves a wide range of skills from numerical and computational methods, data analysis to basics of geochemistry.

This position was sponsored by a consortium of oil companies through the JIBA project. Together with colleagues from the University of Durham we developed a 3D deterministic joint inversion for electromagnetic, seismic and gravity data for large scale applications. A second component was bayesian analysis of joint inversion models to quantify uncertainty.

For my PhD I developed a joint inversion algorithm for magnetotelluric and seismic receiver function data. It is based on a genetic algorithm and has the special ability to identify the trade-off between fitting the different datasets. This trade-off, in turn, indicated in how far seismic and electromagnetic data sense similar structures, an issue often neglected in joint inversion.

An open-source framework for 3D joint inversion of seismic, gravity and magnetotelluric data written in C++.
We present results of three-dimensional joint inversion of seismic, magnetotelluric, and gravity data over a marine salt dome. Such structures are difficult to image with a single method, and our results demonstrate how combining different techniques can yield improved results. More importantly, we examine the reliability of velocity-conductivity relationships derived from structure-... more
A framework for 3-D joint inversion of MT, gravity and seismic refraction data
Geophysical Journal International | January 1, 2011 Authors: Max Moorkamp, Bjrn Heincke, Marion Jegen
We present a 3-D joint inversion framework for seismic, magnetotelluric (MT) and scalar and tensorial gravity data. Using large-scale optimization methods, parallel forward solvers and a flexible implementation in terms of model parametrization allows us to investigate different coupling approaches for the various physical parameters involved in the joint inversion. Here we compare two different... more
Joint inversion of receiver functions, surface wave dispersion, and magnetotelluric data
Journal of Geophysical Research B: Solid Earth | April 30, 2010 Authors: Max Moorkamp, Alan Jones, S. Fishw ick
We present joint inversion of magnetotelluric, receiver function, and Raleigh wave dispersion data for a one-dimensional Earth using a multiobjective genetic algorithm (GA). The chosen GA produces not only a family of models that fit the data sets but also the trade-off between fitting the different data sets. The analysis of this trade-off gives insight into the compatibility between the seismic... more
We present an approach to calculate scalar and tensor gravity utilizing the massively parallel architecture of consumer graphics cards. Our parametrization is based on rectilinear blocks with constant density within each blocks. This type of parametrization is well suited for inversion of gravity data or joint inversion with other datasets, but requires the calculation of a large number of model... more
Joint inversion of teleseismic receiver functions and magnetotelluric data using a genetic algorithm: Are seismic velocities and electrical conductivities compatible?
Geophysical Research Letters | August 25, 2007 Authors: Max Moorkamp, Alan Jones, David Eaton
Joint inversion of different kinds of geophysical data has the potential to improve model resolution, under the assumption that the different observations are sensitive to the same subsurface features. Here, we examine the compatibility of P-wave teleseismic receiver functions and long-period magnetotelluric (MT) observations, using joint inversion, to infer one-dimensional lithospheric structure.... more
Joint inversion of long-period magnetotelluric data and surface-wave dispersion curves for anisotropic structure: Application to data from Central Germany
Geophysical Research Letters | March 10, 2011 Authors: Max Moorkamp, Alan Jones
Geophysical datasets sensitive to different physical parameters can be used to improve resolution of Earth's internal structure. Herein, we jointly invert long-period magnetotelluric (MT) data and surface-wave dispersion curves. Our approach is based on a joint inversion using a genetic algorithm for a onedimensional (1-D) isotropic structure, which we extend to 1-D anisotropic media. We apply... more
