Happy Spring!z

We hope that parents and students enjoyed their two week March Break! We are so excited to be back at the studio - its an exciting time of year as we prepare for R.A.D. Ballet Grade and Vocational exams, and as other classes get started on recital choreography! Check out what our dancers have been up to this winter!

PULSE & CAMP PULSE 2014

We were thrilled to have examiner Helen Ford here with us for ve days of BATD exams this year. All of our dancers did very well! Result forms will be handed out at the next class. Scholarship nominees (Grade 3 & up) will not be sent to us until mid-August. Congratulations to all dancers on their success!

B.A.T.D. Exams

It was another wonderful weekend in Toronto for The Pulse on Tour & Camp Pulse this year! Cumbraes 5th year in attendance, we had 28 students aged 8-17 travel with us for this fantastic event! Our senior dancers performed in two numbers at the Pulse Performance on the Saturday evening and made us very proud!

For the second year running, Cumbrae received the Studio Spirit Award, Gabrielle Lowe won a Pulse Leadership Scholarship towards next years event, and Camp Pulse dancers Olivia Walker, Shawna MacIver, & Alicia Cowling were given the Rock Star Awards! Other weekend highlights included a tour of The National Ballet of Canada, Cumbrae Performers Movie Night, the pool party, and a special invite to a GBD performance for our senior dancers! Looking forward to next year already! by the Ottawa and Kanata Music Academies. This years Cumbrae performance included a variation danced by Megan Evraire, Tiaran Sinkus, & Danya Bouzane as well as our Pulse jazz dance!

Once again Cumbrae dancers were invited to dance at the Echoes of Winter CHEO Benet held at Carleton Us Kailash Mital Theatre. Echoes of Winter is an annual performance & silent auction hosted

Master Class with MJ Shaw

A few of our senior ballet students took their ballet examinations in the fall. Unlike the grades, the vocational exams happen throughout the year, allowing for students to advance to the next level at a more individual pace.

RAD Fall Vocationals

This fall we had four of our students in exams and are proud to say that all were not only successful, but achieved wonderful results! ! Madie Erazo (Adv.1), Adrianna McGee (Adv.2), & Madison McColl (Adv.2) all received a merit. Gretha Conrads (Adv. 1) received a distinction.

her rst summer program away from home. Camille Leroux, currently one of our youngest ever Advanced 1 Ballet candidates, is also thrilled, and will be sharing this opportunity with her younger sister, Cassandre. At age nine, Cassandre is one of the youngest eligible students for this type of intensive program. the summer program at the prestigious Canadas National Ballet School. We are very proud of this talented young lady!

Lisa Harvie
Originally from Ottawa, Lisa Harvie has been working in the New York City dance community for over 12 years. As an accomplished performer, teacher, and choreographer, her training encompasses a variety of dance disciplines. She holds her Advanced certicate in ballet through the Royal Academy of Dance and is fully qualied with the British Association (BATD) in jazz, tap and highland. She is a member of Actors Equity and a graduate of the University of Toronto. Lisa received much of her early training here at Cumbrae, under the tutalage of mother, and school Principal, Marion Harvie. Additional training includes Randolph Dance Theater, Metro Movement, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Steps on Broadway. As a dancer, credits include West Side Story (U.S. National Tour), My Fair Lady (Regional Tour Theater of the Stars), Carousel (Stages St. Louis),

Singin' in the Rain (Houston TUTS), My Fair Lady (Houston TUTS), West Side Story (Gateway Playhouse), Oklahoma (Gateway Playhouse), Footloose (Gateway Playhouse), & Scrooge (New York Stage Originals). Lisa appeared in the 20th Anniversary Concert Performance of Rags at the Nokia Theater in NY and performed in the workshop production of The Great White Way, directed and choreographed by David Marquez. In addition to her work in musical theater, she has also danced with the Ottawa Ballet and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens at Canada's National Arts Center. Ms. Harvie has been on faculty at Steps on Broadway for over 10 years. She has taught at NYU's Strasberg Institute, the Connecticut Dance Conservatory, and The School at Columbia (NYC) and has been a guest teacher throughout the tri-state area as well as in Canada. She has given master classes for Verb Ballets (Cleveland), Destination Broadway (NYC), The Elan Awards (NYC), the B.A.T.D. Annual Conventions (Toronto), to name a few. Lisa was the Associate Choreographer for Kiss Me Kate and Oklahoma at the Gateway Playhouse. She also choreographed "Funny As a Crutch" for the Foolish Theater Company in New York. She has showcased numerous original pieces at Steps and has worked with school theater programs in setting fulllength musical productions. Congratulations to Lisa on all of her success!

BAT D Master Class Series


Along with other Ottawa area dance studios, Cumbrae has teamed up to create the BATD Master Class Series. With so many dance conventions & workshops happening outside our great city, we are hoping to create a series of workshop classes that bring in exciting choreographers and performers to a studio near you! Master classes are aimed at dancers aged 8 & up and are offered in a variety of dance styles- from contemporary to musical theatre! In the fall, Kevin Howe (SYTYCDC) gave an inspiring master class, and on March 22nd Cumbrae will host Melissa Jane Shaw (two time Dora Award nominee for best choreographer). Classes are $25 per student and are a great opportunity for dancers to experience new styles and meet fellow dancers. Keep checking our facebook and website for upcoming master classes!

COURTNEY DINELLEMAYER
Courtney will be playing a mite in the upcoming production of Ruddigore. This Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, performed by the Savoy Society of Ottawa, will open at the Algonquin College Commons Theatre in April. For more about the production or to purchas tickets, visit www.ottawasavoysociety.org

MISS PELLETIER
Cumbrae teacher, Tori Pelletier, has been selected to be one of the Ottawa RedBlacks CFL Dance Team dancers. Tori will be performing at 2014 games, supporting events, & televised shows. Well done Miss Pelletier!

Do you have your tickets to see Ballet Jorgens upcoming production of Romeo & Juliet? One of Cumbraes senior dancers, Gabrielle Lowe, is one of only a handful of dancers in the Ottawa area that has been selected to perform in the production. Many of our Irish dancers have been participating in local Feiseanna. The December Feis, held at Confederation High School, was a rst time experience for many of our Irish students, and all found it to be fun and fullling day! The more recent Spring Feis, was a school Feis put on by theSue Fay Healy Irish Dance Studio. Looking forward to the next one!
