TA 265-001 Costume Construction

Course Overview An introduction to the principles and basic techniques of costume construction for the stage.

Course Description Lecture; One hour and fifteen minutes each week. Basic sewing, cutting, and fabric modification skills are taught and utilized in a shop environment. Additional hours in the shop beyond class time should be expected to complete projects. Learning Outcomes Upon the successful completion of this course you should possess: A fundamental understanding of hand and machine sewing as it applies to theatrical costuming. Knowledge of shop staff titles and roles, as well as the structure and organization of a costume shop. Basic understanding of the mechanics, safe use, and maintenance of shop equipment Basic knowledge of the principles of fabric modification and distressing as it applies to costuming. Materials Needed All materials are covered by your materials fee Grading There will be a variety of in class assignments as well as two additional show related projects that may require additional out of class time. The projects are graded on a point system as follows: Small in class projects: 15 points each Show related projects: 250 points each Tests or quizzes: 10 points each Final sewing test: 200 points The final grade for the course will be determined by taking the number of points earned and dividing by the number of points available for the entire course. Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the due date. No exceptions. Work turned in at the end of class is considered one day late. Work turned in late will receive a 30% reduction in grade for each day that it is late. No work will be accepted after the third day. Large projects are show related. Therefore, the due date for completion is first dress. However, the project must be wearable by the actors first fitting.

If your project is not finished by final dress, you will receive a failing grade for the project, regardless of how well it is done. You may make up missed assignments for excused absences only. (See attendance policy below).

Attendance The majority of our small assignments are assigned and completed within one class. Therefore, you will not be able to pass this class if you do not attend. Any unexcused absence after two will result in the loss of one full grade, and after five unexcused absences, you fail the course. If you have an illness, death in the family, or other reason for missing class, I ask that you provide me with documentation of the reason (doctors note, death notice, etc) as soon as possible. I will accept scanned and emailed documentation, so there is no need to wait until you return. If you provide appropriate documentation, you will receive an excused absence that will not count against your grade in any way. Students missing due to an excused absence must notify me within one week following the period of the absence. For additional information regarding these policies, please refer to page 72 of the current university bulletin. Besides, Im a funny and entertaining instructor, you dont want to miss the random story I might tell the class and have to hear about it from someone else, do you? Please do not email me to tell me you will not be in class unless you are submitting documentation that makes the absence excused.

You have to do it in a movie theatre, so doing it for class shouldnt be an issue. Be respectful of each other, as well as me.
