“The Colorado Judicial Institute has long supported the appropriate use of ADR as a method to efficiently and effectively
resolve disputes to the mutual satisfaction of all parties. Effective use of ADR can also reduce heavily burdened court
dockets that now put such a strain on our judicial system”, stated attorney Peter D. Willis, vice chair of the Colorado
Judicial Institute.
Dana Nelson, CJI Executive Director, said that “the Colorado judges, magistrates, and family court facilitators who receive
scholarship funds will certainly benefit from being exposed to the innovative ways in which ADR is being used and the best
practices models that are being developed. This conference is remarkably successful and has grown each year due to the
quality of speakers and information being offered. We at CJI are very pleased to be in a position to make attendance at the
conference possible for judicial representatives from around the state.”
The conference will welcome Jamil Mahuad, former President of Ecuador and co-founder and senior adviser of the
International Negotiation Program at Harvard Law School, as keynote speaker. President Mahuad currently researches and
teaches negotiation, leadership, and the challenges facing struggling democracies and businesses in the age of globalization.
His long-term collaboration with Professors Roger Fisher and Daniel Shapiro in the theory and practice of successful
negotiations is reflected in his contributed chapter to the book Beyond Reason: Using Emotions as You Negotiate, a chapter
that illustrates the practical application of negotiation to resolving international disputes.
Conference presentations will cover practices in workplace, family, civil/commercial, restorative justice, community, and
elder settings. There will be a track for advanced skill practitioners and sessions that focus on the use of ADR in
conjunction with the courts.
