[edit]Overview
Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) is a brilliant college dropout. Mike's childhood dream of becoming an attorney was derailed after he was caught selling a math exam to the Dean's daughter. Naturally intelligent and with an eidetic memory, Mike makes a living taking tests for other people, particularly LSATs. Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) is one of New York City's top attorneys who has recently been promoted to senior partner at his firm, and is forced by company policy to hire an associate. After an accidental interview with Mike, Harvey is impressed by the younger man's quick wits, his encyclopedic knowledge of the law, and his genuine desire to be an attorney, and hires him. Due to the fact that Mike lacks a law degree, and because the firm exclusively hires Harvard alumni, they both pretend that Mike is a Harvard graduate. At the firm, Mike is continuously hounded by junior partner Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman), Harvey's jealous rival. Mike is eventually befriended by Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle), aparalegal, whose test anxiety has prevented her from attending law school, and the two soon develop a mutual attraction. Mike and Harvey often come into conflict over Mike's naivet and ethical scruples and Harvey's hard charging and seemingly uncaring demeanor. Even so, the two make a strong partnership, helping each other overcome his weaknesses.

cast
Gabriel Macht as Harvey Specter: New York's best closer, a senior partner at Pearson Hardman,[6] and former ADA in the New York County District Attorney's Office. He was initially given a job by Jessica Pearson in the firm's mail room and the firm paid for him to go to Harvard Law, where he was graduated fifth in his class despite Jessica's statement that "while there, you jerked around". He dislikes taking on pro bono cases. He also does not like to be emotionally attached to his clients and often quotes movies. He is from Chicago, played baseball in college, and is a car enthusiast. Even with his cold demeanor, he shows
care for people that are loyal to him as seen with Ray and Donna. He is sometimes mocked by the fact that Jessica is taller than him. It has been revealed that he has a little brother, though nothing more is known about him. He has a huge problem with people going out of the bounds and breaking the law just to win a case. He believes that the facts should not be tampered with. He also believes in fairness, as seen in his hunt to correct his mistakes during his time as an ADA. He is strict about not sleeping with married women, as they have too much baggage and he respects the contract of marriage.
Patrick J. Adams as Mike Ross: an attorney who never attended law school, but his eidetic memory allows him to consume and regurgitate legal knowledge better than attorneys who have studied law at places such as Harvard. In the pilot episode, he uses this skill to convince Harvey to hire him as his associate attorney over other candidates who are Harvard Law graduates. In a later episode, he is able to beat another associate when questioned about topics only Harvard Law graduates would know (number of current Supreme Court Justices from Harvard Law). He used to take LSAT exams as a proxy for aspiring attorneys. He is revealed to have aspired to be an attorney when he was in college, but due to his financial needs, he made the mistake of memorizing a math test and selling it to the university dean's daughter, leading to the revocation of his scholarship and expulsion from university. His parents died when he was young and his grandmother raised him. He often gets emotionally involved with his cases, which is seen as negative by both Harvey and Jessica, however, it does help him get information from clients.
Rick Hoffman as Louis Litt: a junior partner at Pearson Hardman who serves as the "disciplinarian" of the associates, as well as Harvey's antagonist. Louis specializes in financial crimes. He often bends the rules to get what he wants. This was first observed when he faked Mike's drug test and showed a positive result for pot rather than the original negative. He has a love of Broadway shows and tennis. He is allergic to peanuts, and strawberries, is gluten-intolerant, and does not like chicken. He has always had a suspicion about Mike Ross's status as a Harvard graduate.
Meghan Markle as Rachel Zane: a paralegal who at first is a friend to Mike, but later on starts to develop romantic feelings toward him. She aspires to be an attorney, but suffers from test anxiety; Mike tries to help her to score higher on the LSAT, but in the process reveals the secret about his past. She was born into a rich family, but wants to live on what she makes in order to prove a point to her father, who she says always wanted a son rather than a daughter. In Season 1, she kissed Mike, which leaves Mike confused, and she also left him a voice message that Mike never heard. But Trevor heard it and told Jenny about it, which led her to break up with Mike in Season 2.
Sarah Rafferty as Donna Paulsen: Harvey's assistant and close confidant. She will go out of her way to help Harvey, even if it means crossing him. She has worked with Harvey since his first year as an ADA. She is powerful enough to be able to scare even Louis, having an extensive memory of his former indiscretions.
Gina Torres as Jessica Pearson: Harvey's boss and founder and managing partner of Pearson Hardman. She was formerly married to Quentin Sainz during Harvey's time at Harvard. At the end of Season 1, she was told by Trevor that Mike was a fraud and Harvey is covering for him. Even though she plans on having Harvey fire Mike, she lets him stay due to Daniel Hardman's return to the firm after his wife died and Harvey's threatened departure if she were to fire Mike, which would leave her vulnerable to Daniel.
[edit]Recurring
cast
Tom Lipinski as Trevor Evans: Mike's ex-drug-dealing, former best friend; at the end of Season 1, he told Jessica the truth about the secrets of Harvey and Mike
Vanessa Ray as Jenny Griffith: Trevor's ex-girlfriend and Mike's confidant and former girlfriend Rebecca Schull as Mike's grandmother: Mike's grandmother raised him after his parents died; she has shown a dislike toward Trevor and doesn't want him in Mike's life, referring to Trevor as an anchor that just brings Mike down
Ben Hollingsworth as Kyle Durant: one of Louis's protgs who is frequently pitted against Mike Max Topplin as Harold Jakowski: one of Mike's associate friends David Costabile as Daniel Hardman: attorney and former founder; Jessica's cruel partner of Pearson Hardman that Jessica kicked out five years before the series beginning, but who returns "a changed man"; however, Jessica and Harvey don't buy it

[edit]Development
and production
Suits first appeared on USA network's development slate under the title A Legal Mind in April 2010.[8] In May, the network placed a cast-contingent pilot order from a pilot script written by Aaron Korsh.[9] Patrick J. Adams was cast in the lead role of Mike Ross in July 2010.[10] In late July, Gabriel Macht joined the cast as Harvey Specter, the attorney who hires Mike.[11] Rick Hoffman came on board in mid-August to portray Harvey's
competition at the law firm.[12] Meghan Markle and Gina Torres completed the main cast in late August.[13] Torres was cast as Jessica Pearson, the managing partner at the firm, and Markle portrays Rachel Zane, a paralegal who has an encyclopedic knowledge of the law. The pilot was filmed in New York City in fall 2010.[14][15] The network gave a Green-light to the series with a 12-episode order on January 19, 2011. The series began filming in Toronto, Ontario on April 25, 2011, and completed August 12, 2011.[16][17]
[edit]Reception
Suits received a score of 60 out of 100 on Metacritic, indicating mixed or average reviews.[18] Ginia Bellafante, a critic for the The New York Times, gave the pilot a positive review: "A new legal series beginning on Thursday on USA, erupts from a Mount Vesuvius of absurdities, and yet like so much else in the USA stable, it comes in relatively good faithnot merely with a snappy sense of its own fun, but also with a chipper belief in the viability of renewal."[19] In a review in the The Miami Herald, Glenn Garvin referred to the show as "cuttingly funny".[20] BuddyTV described Suits as "an excellent summer show andmore than thata truly high-quality piece of television."[21] and ranked it #2 on its list of 2011's best new TV shows.[22] In August 2011, the series was renewed for a second season.[23] On December 14, 2011, Patrick J. Adams was nominated in the Actor in a Drama Series category at the 18th Screen Actor Guild Awards. [24]
