She now has the giant task of moving her

BODY BEAUTIFUL
The May issue was such an inspiration
health ano ntness are such wioespreao
preoccupations today, and HELLO! gave
it a fun and interesting spin. Fitness divas
Sanam Bakshi, Ramona Rodella, Shruti
Kothari and Shilpa Reddy are great
examples of healthy living and reading
about their routines and advice made me
want to follow in their footsteps too! Last
but not the least, Shilpa Shettys journey
to becoming a hottie once more was the
low-fat icing on top. Her son is the cutest
little fellow and really added warmth to
the story.
Rohini Ahuja, Mumbai
ENRICHING STORIES
It seems even kitty parties have slid into
the health zone, with Seema Jajodias
guilt-free brunch! Its a smart way to
have a ball without actually turning into
one! Rujuta Diwekars busted diet myths
answered a lot of questions and served
as a great health guide. The spread on
Sherina Dalamal and her friends was
chic, and the cover story with Shilpa
Shetty and Viaan melted my heart. This
months stories were well thought out and
had a strong concept well done!
Esha Singh, New Delhi
FRESH AND SUMMERY
Almost all the shoots in this issue are
bright and fresh quite apt for summer,
and of course, one cant miss the fact that
these lovely ladies are proudly strutting
their ber-toned bodies! Dia Mirza looks
stunning as always, theres an undeniable
ethereal glow to her that HELLO! has
effortlessly captured. The feature on
luggage was one you can only nno in
a magazine such as yours classy and
chic! The fashion and beauty pages also
deserve special mention for being fun
and informative!
Maya Patel, Pune
SPIRITUALLY SAVVY
I loved the May issue, it really packed a
punch! One of my favourite stories was
Uraaz Bahl and Shaana Levys nuptials.
It was a real fairytale wedding, and the
pictures were lovely and intimate. The
ntness section was gooo too, a push in the
right direction to strive for a bikini body
this summer! The Havens to Heaven story
paid attention to the spiritual aspect and
Dr Deepak Chopras interview gave good
insights into spiritual matters.

HELLO! COUPLE
HELLO! JUNE 2013 12
HELLO! JUNE 2013 13
T
he daughter of renowned
architect, IM Kadri, the
elegant, minimalist Mana Shetty
has had her hands full since the
launch of her R Homes, the
swanky new lifestyle store in
Mumbais Lower Parel area. Just
gearing up for the grey monsoons,
she has put together a new Retro
Collection which is a celebration
of colour. You will see gorgeous
Venetian glass laden mirrors,
consoles, side tables, ornate chairs
with lovely carvings and ornate
silks. We are also bringing in some
cheerlul nower assemblies.
As one walks around the
generously spaced spit-level
home dcor and solutions store, a
fresh note here is the perfect yin-
yang balance. The store features
everything from the smallest detail
like a candlebra to alpha masculine
macro-installations, like a larger-
than-life horse constructed from
raw timber slabs from Southeast
Asia which sold out on the launch
evening itsell shares Mana,
relerring to the high-pronle launch
in January. Like most projects born
out of passion, this one too waited
to appear at the right place, at the
right time.
The idea for a lifestyle store
has been on my mind for quite
a while, shares Mana, but it is
only now that I felt the time was
right. People are keen to set up
second homes in greener, more
open spaces. Hence they now
have room for more exotic bric-
a-brac, and larger-than-life objets
dart. They are looking for drama
pieces to team up with otherwise
soothing minimalism.
Husband Suniel Shetty concurs,
feeling Mana was always a great
potential home-visualiser. She
has an eye for detailing, and its
somewhere in the bloodline also,
with her architect dad. She has
seen beautiful homes all her life.
Its the woman who really makes
a home out of a house, and this
I saw when she moved into our
big place. She didnt make big
changes, but introduced small ones
which altered the look and feel. I
also saw her nair lor oressing up a
space when we built our farmhouse
in Khanoala a lew years back.
This cosy house, perched
on the edge of a valley, with a
waterlall going through, as Suniel
describes it, is the Shettys escape
from all things mundane, polluted
and concrete. We have electricity
generated by a little windmill,
foliage watered by a natural spring,
and fresh oxygen in abundance,
thanks to the 150 to 200 trees
planted by the family! Yes, when
we bought the property, it wasnt
so approachable. There were only
two trees, and lots of barren rock
covered land. We inputed six layers
of soil before planting our own
trees, shares Suniel.
Having set up a holiday home
themselves, it was not oilncult to
envisage what such spaces required,
to create a sense of tranquility and
beauty. While R Homes product
range for interiors includes
rugs, light nxtures, lurniture,
Reidel wine glasses and an entire
upholstery mini-studio, what
immediately appears to be a USP
is the lush green terrace, and its
array of products branded Green
from vertical gardens (small
potted plants placed in vertical
niches along a wall) to caf-style
outdoor furniture sun chairs, sun
umbrellas, etc. As you can guess,
greening areas is my obsession,
concedes Suniel, who took six
weeks oll lrom his nlm worlo to oo
full justice to the store. There was
a time Altamount Road, where
we live in Mumbai, had so many
sparrows, parrots, and now their
presence is so scant. If you have a
terrace, I believe you should make
it bird-friendly and fully green. At
R Homes, I have introduced the
idea of vertical gardens featuring
plants from Andhra Pradesh they
have sturdier, bigger trees there.
Even if you want a vertical green
wall indoors, these plants will
grow with minimal sun. This kind
of green cover can envelope any
concrete structure within minutes.
And each plant in the wall has its
own mobile app number just
Its the woman who really makes a home out of a

punch the number and you will
have reminders for everything
you need to do, to nurture them.
Now we are also growing exotic
vegetables and herbs offering
such solutions at the store so you
can have your own mini-salad
garden. We also offer gazebos and
log cabins which can be put up in
12 hours. While most people end
up making concrete construction
in ecologically delicate areas, like
near the sea these solutions
can be assembled in just 12
hours and brought down quickly
too.. causing minimum harm to
the environment. They are all
made of eco-friendly materials,
says Suniel.
Another USP of the new
store, is its attempt to support the
diversity of home products made
in India itself be they incense and
wind chimes from Pondicherry,
Buddhas manufactured in India,
rugs and beautifully embroidered
sofa upholstery. Explains Suniel,
We found that some of the best
products were made for exports
and were unavailable in India!
I found that to be a bit sad. So
we got in touch with the source
manufacturers, and once we
tapped that network, it wasnt
oilncult to stock these prooucts.
Of course over the past four
months, the couple did also travel
together and pick up interesting
objet dart from nearby countries
too. Says Mana, You will nno
stonework Buddhas and antiques
from Vietnam, Indonesia,
leather goods from Turkey,
masks from Africa. People want
an international feel to a home
these days, I am not sure they
are all looking for silver trays
with Sanskirt shlokas! she smiles,
sounding a tad tangential to
movements by interiors innovators
like Pinaken Patel, even culture
shop purveyors like Preeti
Hiranandani, who have been
helping Indian crafts communities
to adapt their super-evolved crafts
to modern needs. After all, even
Picassos disproportionate faces
and bodies were inspired by
African tribal art! But then, one
can see, Mana is open to learning
more about this world.
After all, switching trajectories
is not new to this family. Few may
know that Suniel Shetty actually
came from a family rooted in
the restaurant business while
Suniels own family till date has
a restaurant at Opera House,
Mumbai, the traditional Shetty
dosa-idli franchise is also directly
linked to him, through a cousin
who lived in the same building. I

studied catering and if at all I have
survived in the movie world, its
because of the values I imbibed in
the food business. Values like the
customer always comes nrst, ano
your doors must be open anytime,
day or night. You learn that while
the world is partying, you must
work. One automatically learns
time and people management.
Today all this has helped me
in acting ano nlm proouction
work, even though last year I
burneo my nngers with my home
productions! This year, I have
lour to nve nlms releasing ,as an
actor) so its going to be quite a
busy year.
In fact, shares Mana, the
very location of R Homes, has
a poignant family history. My
father-in-law, Veer Shetty, was
hired as a cleaner boy here, and
rose to the ranks of working in the
kitchen, then being a waiter, then
a manager, from where he grew to
becoming a proprietor, by buying
this plus two other properties!
What a Bombay Dream story!
Yes, and that was why he was
there on the opening day to light
the lamp, continues Suniel. I
have a massive safe which he had
bought when he was 16 or 17, I
restored it, put a little Lakshmi in
it, ano the bill lrom our nrst sale
here, and have locked it and kept
it all in the store, he says, warmly.
As parents, both Suniel and
Mana are also witnessing another
pet project watching their
daughter Athiya, and their son
Aahan, shape up for careers in
Bollyville. One cant conclude the
interview without bringing up the
future little Shettys. Shares Mana,
Both Athiya and Ahaan are
inclineo towaros careers in the nlm
industry, which is also an industry
about creativity. I am so glad
that both my kids have a leaning
towards beauty and aesthetics
too. My daughter is more store-
proud than even home-proud!
My son would come here for an

HEART-WARMING STORIES, HELLO! DISCOVERS THE INTENSITY OF THEIR
BOND, CEMENTED BY LOVE AND LAUGHTER
RITA MEHTA AND
FAARAH
SHEWAKRAMANI
HELLO! JUNE 2013 19
How would you describe your connection, do
you share a strong bond?
Faarah: Our relationship is interesting because it is
a little of a lot of things. Part friend, part sibling, part
connoante, part parent ano part co-pilot our roles
keep reversing and changing to suit the circumstances
and the need that each of us has at that particular point.
Aside from the boundless, unconditional love that I feel
for my mum, she is my most trusted secret keeper and
the greatest guide a human being could ask for.
Rita: It is an unbreakable bond. She is my special
gift from God. More so now after my husband Karl
passed away. She has been my strength, my friend,
my support and my guide. When I look back, I feel
proud that whatever I did during her growing years
was obviously RIGHT I truly unoerstano the saying:
Child is the father of man. She has taught me so
many sensible, logical and wonderful things in life.
She`s a born philosopher ano analyst that`s her gilt
Let us in on what you both have in common
Faarah: The one thing we have in common is that we
are both horrinc oecision-makers ano we love to oiscuss
our options over hours, weeks ano sometimes months
From what dessert we should order or what vase looks
better in the living room, to what colour shower cap we
should buy if left to our own devices, we could discuss
these mundane matters till the cows came home and
still have not arrived at any viable conclusion. When
mum and I were debating over whether to attend a
gourmet cooking class recently, my husband Sagar
actually interjected and asked us if there was, by any
chance, a decision-making course available because
that woulo be lar more benencial than any cooking or
other course that was out there
Rita: She gets her dilly dallying with making
decisions from me for sure and this used to drive
my husbano Karl nuts Asioe lrom being extremely
positive in our approach to life, in most other ways we
are total opposites. While I am totally calm, she is a
little tornaoo. While I am nercely private, she will wear
her emotions on her sleeve, shoulder and anywhere else
she can. Its our dissimilarities that bring us together
because somehow we balance each other out to a
happy medium.
Rita, what were your dreams for Faarah? How
proud of her are you, today?
Rita: I believe, without dreams you die, but its
important not to impose your own dreams and
expectations on your chiloren. Iaarah has gone lar
beyond anything I could have dreamed for her. She is
talented, ambitious and has earned so much respect,
not only for what she has achieved, but also for who she
is. A prouo moment was when, with a connoence ol
her own at 22, she started a magazine in India, Hi! Blitz.
From there, she later rose to be the Editor of Masala!
in Dubai and subsequently Group Editor of over 24
magazines at the ITP Publishing Group the largest
publishers in the Middle East, which she did on her
own steam. She has the power and the courage to write
in the style of her grandfather, Russy Karanjia. I am
sure he too would be very proud of her today. Faarah
is now going to lulnl a oream both she ano her lather
Karl shared together to open an etiquette consultancy
and academy. A venture I am joining her in. I call her
a tornado today when she enters a room she does so
with a nurry ol activity Yet, when we sit together ano
talk as adults, she assures me with her peace, serenity
ano connoence.
Faarah, how well does your mum understand
you? Has she been a support system for you?
Faarah: For being two very different people, with
very different and distinct personalities, she surprisingly
gets me. She has this almost monk-like live and let live
approach to the worlo which extenoeo to how she
brought me up always gently aovising with examples
and logic and never imposing her views or judgements
on me, she always gave me the freedom to choose my
own path and to learn from my own mistakes one
of the bravest things a parent can do. And of course,
if there were any broken pieces, she would be right
UNBREAKABLE BOND
HELLO! JUNE 2013 20
behind me to pick them up and nurture me
back to being whole again.
What rituals did you have when
Faarah was still little?
Faarah: After school and homework
everyday, we would go to the US Club
together and mum would tell me Jamas and
Jeelu stories! Jamas and Jeelu were a crazy
Parsi twosome, who did the most bizarre
things, in the most bizarre ways. I am still
not quite sure if these stories really existed
or if mum just made them up as she went
along, but given the fact that Parsis are nutty
to begin with, you can well imagine how fun
made-up stories were about them with extra
spice thrown into the mix! On the days that
Jamas and Jeelu were on holiday in Khandala,
mum would tell me the story about the
giraffe in the circus who used to say tinkle,
tinkle when he wanted to go to the loo I
suppose this was around the time when they
were trying to loo-train me!
Rita: The one thing I loved to do was to
fetch Faarah from school, and when I meet
her friends from Cathedral today, thats
probably the nrst thing they tell me they
remember. The one time that we were all in
hysterics was when Faarah decided, in her
fat little state, to do a rendition of Marilyn
Monroes Happy Birthday Mr President in front
of us, holding the mic with her podgy little
nngers in her oishevelleo teooy bear nightie,
attempting to put on a sexy voice, like
Marilyn did in the song!
Are your tastes similar? What do you
agree and disagree on?
Faarah: Our tastes are similar on most
things, and if we disagree on something, one
of us manages to get the other on side by the
end of it.
Rita: We have similar tastes on a lot of
things and if we dont agree, we agree
to disagree or well manage somehow to
convince the other to do it our way.
How would you describe your fashion
essentials today?
Rita: Im conservative in general, but
through Faarah I have learnt to be a little
more trendy, get into shape and wear dresses
again after over 20 years. For her wedding,
I actually wore a few dresses some that
were off-the-shoulder too. Now that was an
essential achievement for me!
Faarah: Neat hair, neat nails, well-
ntting clothes, lots ol bright colours, gooo
manners, a gracious disposition and a
big smile!
What are your most
prized possessions?
Rita: All the lovely pictures of my fat
little pudgy daughter, who looked like a
Japanese baby when she was born. Every
time I look at these pictures my heart
feels overwhelmed with joy.
Faarah: Memories of my years
growing up with my friends and family
from family holidays to my time in college
and some precious heirlooms that my
grandpa, granny and pa left for me that have
enchanting stories and a magical history
behind them.
What does style mean to you?
Rita: Style is not really about clothes for
me, its about your personality and how you
conduct yourself.
Faarah: Style, for me, is so much more
than a pair of shoes, a sprinkling of
diamonds and a piece of clothing. Your
individuality, personality, character and
savoir-faire, speaks far more about your style,
than just a pair of hot Loubs that you can
buy off a rack or an Herms bag that you
ordered at a store.
A legacy you would pass on to
your daughter?
Rita: To be kind, generous and gracious
and to help others. Whatever I may have
done that was good, has come back to me
a thousand fold today. Having seen this with
her own eyes, I am connoent Iaarah will
lead her life in a similar way. And aside from
that, over the years, I have always given her
the freedom to be herself and choose who
she wants to be and she has paid me back
a million times by being my true friend
and support.
Some proud moments as a daughter?
Faarah: Mums composure and
unrelentingly positive attitude, through the
past two years after my father passed away,
has been remarkable.
How involved was your mother with
the planning of your wedding?
Faarah:We were all involved in planning
the wedding! My mum-in-law, mum and I
managed the creative side, while my dad-
in-law and Sagar managed the logistics and
nnancial sioe - a oecision that was taken
after Sags and his father discovered, to their
horror, that we tend to add and subtract
zeros from numerical values without
any discretion and often confuse dollars
with dirhams!
The one trait in each other that you
absolutely love?
Rita: Faarahs complete and utter
dedication to look after me after Karl
passed away.
Faarah: Mums subtle sarcasm especially
when she tries to use it on the staff, in her
awful Parsi Hindi! The comments go right
above their heads and they end up doing
exactly what she doesnt want them to do
very amusing!
What are you both currently working
on professionally?
Rita: Faarah and I run our Indian fashion,
lifestyle and Bollywood syndication
agency called Keynote Media Pvt Ltd
and our media consultancy called Bblitz
Marketing and Consultancy. We are
currently developing an academy/
institute that teaches cultural,
corporate and social etiquette
in order to easily assimilate into
any and all societal, cultural and
corporate scenarios at home
and internationally, through
acquiring key knowledge
and the correct
know-how.
She is my special gift from God.
More so now after my husband Karl
passed away. She has been
my strength, my friend, my support
and my guide.

ideal place to start ones married

found and bought the house of
their dreams a wooden, colonial

wonderful landscape of the Keys
(the savage archipelago in South
Florida). It is a 5,000 plus square
loot abooe with tastelul, nirty

terrace has been added along with
a large garden and a swimming
pool with a jacuzzi. More happy

who recently turned 40, talks
about his views on fatherhood and
how his life has changed since he
married the petite Belgian model.
Julio, how did the idea
of buying this house in
the Keys come about?
Charisse and I love this place.
Since we met, we spent many great
times in the Keys. It is our favourite
corner in Florida, known for its
great beauty. So when we decided
to get married, we said we wanted
to live here.
So you needed a change
of residence?
Yes, we needed it. We wanted
to start our married life in a
new place, and here we are in
the Keys, in our new home!
Wns it diIBcult to docido or did
you love the house the minute
you saw it?
Charisse and I have very similar
tastes. Therefore agreeing on
something is easy for us. We visited
several properties in this area. All
were beautiful, but did not quite
nt us. When we saw this, we both
said, this is our home. I think
the house chose us! (laughs).
Was the dcor of the house left
to you or Charisse?
The house we decorated has both
our taste. I love the dcor. I was
more involved with the furnishings
while Charisse has given these
feminine touches which transform
a house into a home.
What is your favourite spot?
The terrace, because we love
being outdoors. This wonderful
landscape makes us forget the world
and everything is peaceful and
quiet. In the evenings, we like to
lie in the hammock and watch the
stars. Its very romantic.
In the garden wall there are
shells with the date of your
wedding. We guess that
is something special and
signiBcnnt to you both?
Yes, it is a gift I gave to Charisse.
For a week without her knowing,
I decorated the garden wall with
these shells, which spells out
the date of our wedding, as a
symbol that this is our home and
we have started a new stage in
our relationship now.
Is this the house of
your dreams?
Absolutely, yes. It has everything
we wanted. We are very happy
here. Rarely ooes one nno a home
that meets all that one wants,
Without Charisse nding out, I
decorated the garden wall with
shells with our wedding date as a
symbol to say that this is
our home
and this has it all.
Before the Keys, you lived in
a nice house in Miami. Did
you sell that home?
We put it up for sale when we
decided to move to the Keys. It is
a carefully designed home where
every small detail has been well
thought out. Hopefully it will be
sold soon to help us pay for our
new home.
Are you still passing seasons
in the cabin in Lake Tahoe?
Yes, we love our cabin. We escape
to it whenever we can. In winter,
we practiced skiing. Lake Tahoe is
a beautiful place, you can enjoy it
any time of the year.
Julio, congratulations, youve
turned 40. How do you feel?

love, my family is well and Im
not missing work. Anyway, getting
older is not something I worry
about. Thats life, it just depends
on how you take it, and Im
lively. I have always wanted to do
many things.
Did you celebrate in a
special way?
Charisse got out one day and
organised a trip to the sea so
I could swim with dolphins
thats one thing I love doing. At
night, I was surprised with a
romantic dinner. It was a perfect
day, with a cake included! It
gets better everyday.
What gifts did you get?
For me, the best gift was to receive
calls from my mother, father, my
brothers and my best friends. On
our birthdays, Charisse and I
always treat each other to a trip.
We do whatever we can that our
hectic work permits.
How do you see life from the
vantage point of 40?
Just like from the vantage point
of 39. Nothing has changed and
I dont feel its a big deal to have
turned 40. Im the same as I always
was. Live life without worry; that
will leave you from falling off
the calendar.
You married recently. What
balance has been struck?
To marry was something
both Charisse and I wanted to
do, because it consolidates the
common life project that began
nine years ago. They say that over
the years relationships sometimes
weaken. However in our case, it is
quite the opposite. Every day we are
getting better.
Tell us about the relationship
you share with Charisse
We are very happy. It was a
step we wanted to take. Our
relationship has strengthened.
We were clear that we wanted to
spend the rest of our lives together.
In my case, I knew on the very
nrst oay when I met her. Seeing
her, I thought, this is the woman
of my life.
Has the time come to
have children?
Not yet. I think next year will be
a good time to broach the subject
and get down to work.
Before marriage, you and
Charisse were immersed in
work. Has that changed since
your wedding?
No, Charisse and I live for our
work so we cannot slow down. In
this sense, our life has not changed.
We are together and we enjoy
being with each other.
Where was the honeymoon?
Charisse and I love California.
So we oecioeo to cross it by car.
We discovered many corners
we didnt previously know of. It
was a journey that we both want
to repeat.
At any time, has there been
an especially romantic
journey that has left
its mark?
All have been unforgettable.
Being able to enjoy a month

with my wife was the best time. For
me, the most romantic moment
was at our wedding, when I saw
Charisse walking down the aisle.
Its a memory that has impacted
me and will always remain in
my heart.
What about Charisse makes
it so special for you?
For me, Charisse is a mans
dream which became reality. She
is the ideal companion. We share
similar tastes, understand each
other well and can communicate
with just our eyes. She is
my soulmate.
At work, what are your
immediate projects?
Music, which is something I
love and will never abandon.
Im writing new songs. Im also
starring in a television program
in Spain called Splash! Famous
Water. Well see how it goes. Im
also considering the possibility
of participating in a series
that I have been offered in the
United States.
On the family level, you
have lived through terrible
moments; the death of your
aunt, and Miguels (step-
brother) accident... How are
you doing?
Unfortunately, we all lose the
people we love, and its painful.
However, as hard as it is, we must
continue. Although youre crying
inside, you have to paint a smile
on your face and continue along
the path of life. In the case of
Miguel, we are very happy with
the recovery, which has been slow,
but is on track.
Thoso nro diIBcult tinos
that we are speaking of, has
it been especially hard for
your mother?
For my mother, losing her
sister hit her very hard. Shes a
very strong woman who always
outdoes herself.
Due to the distance, you
rarely manage to meet your
parents. We imagine it was
very emotional to have them
both at your wedding?
My wedding is the most important
and wonderful experience that
I have lived through so far. To
share it with my parents was very
emotional. The fact that they

is something I will never forget. I
also recently saw my sister Chbeli
looking very happy. I see it completely
since she hao her baby Sona. She`s a
great woman.
What are your dreams
made of ?
I prefer not to dream. I live day- to-
oay. I`m happy with what I have ano
what I am.
HELLO! in an exclusive tte--tte
with Charisse Verhaert...
Charisse, does your home in
the Keys symbolise something
special for you?
It was our dream to buy a house
in the Keys and what better time
to do that than when we decided to
marry. This is our home.
Has marriage changed
your relationship?
No, it has not changed. We remain
as enamoured as ever. What is true is
that when I wake up in the morning
with Julio, I look ano think, We`re
marrieo` It`s as il I oon`t believe it.
What can you tell us about
the honeymoon?
It was just as we had imagined it
would be. The two of us organised
it and we were able to do everything
we hao planneo. Il I hao to oenne it
in one word, it would be romantic.
Do you want to be a mother?
Yes, but it`s not yet the time. I agree
with Julio that next year would be
a good time to seriously discuss
the issue and start giving shape to
the idea.
How many children would
you like?
Two a boy and a girl. Julio also
agrees with this. I know he will be
a fantastic father. He is so good
with kids.
Are you happy?
Yes. I`m with the man I love. How
can I not be happy?

Aruna Seths luxurious Chelsea
apartment is a true girlie haven,
perlectly renecting the glamour
and elegance of a woman whose
eponymous footwear range has
attracted such discerning fans as
Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie,
singing icons Mariah Carey and
Jennifer Lopez, Hollywood stars
Goldie Hawn, Kate Hudson and
Elizabeth McGovern, and, most
famously, Pippa Middleton.
The Duchess of Cambridges
fashion-savvy sister chose to wear
Aruna Seth shoes to the evening
reception of the 2011 royal
wedding, teaming a beautiful
jade green silk Alice Temperley
gown with Lynn sandals in
a brushed gold, embellished
with Swarovski crystals and
featuring Arunas trademark
emblem, a butterny.
Such is Pippas sartorial clout
that the sandal quickly sold out
and Aruna, who now counts
Kates chic younger sibling as
a friend, found the business she
established in 2008 taken to a
whole new level.
Who would have known that
the next day, Pippa would be
the most talked-about woman in
the world? asks Aruna, 30, with
a smile, as she carefully selects
one of about 150 divine pairs
of shoes that grace her personal
London closet (she keeps more at
her familys home in Surrey) and
slips them, Cinderella-style, onto
her slender feet for HELLO!s
exclusive photo shoot.
For Pippa to choose our shoes
on such a special day was amazing
for us. Not only did it help to get the
brand into Harrods, but it also put
us on the worldwide stage.
Americans in particular love
Pippa and Kate they love anything
British, in fact. For the Jubilee last
year we designed a fabulous pair
of wedges featuring the Union
Jack exclusively for Harrods. They
were covered in Swarovski crystals
and retailed at 3,000. They sold
incredibly well and there was so
much interest from the US.
Its a very good time to be
British, she adds with an emphatic
nod. The world cant get enough
of us.
IF THE SHOE FITS
Shoes are in Arunas blood. Her
multimillionaire father Geoff was
the founder of Ascot footwear, a
hugely popular brand in the 1980s,
and now owns around six shoe
companies, according to his proud
only daughter (Aruna has two
brothers, both of whom are also in
the shoe business).
So its perfectly natural for me
to be surrounded by shoes, adds
the attractive brunette, whose exotic
looks are a mix of Geoff s half
Indian heritage and her mothers
Jamaican genes.

ARUNA SETH
HELLO! JUNE 2013 31
So many girls say to me,
Id love to start a shoe
company. But running
your own business is tough.
For the rst two years I
didnt really sleep
Relaxing in her chic Chelsea
home, Aruna Seth is living her
childhood dream of making
exquisitely beautiful shoes.
Her business is ourishing,
thanks in part to a resurgence
in the worldwide popularity of
the UK. Its a very good time
to be British, says Aruna. The
world cant get enough of us
rummaging in my mothers
wardrobe and clattering around
in her heels shes always worn
labulous shoes. I got my own nrst
pair of heels when I was about
six or seven. They were actually
mediocre height, but I was in love
with them.
Aruna proved her
entrepreneurial mettle just a
few years later when she started
selling her fathers brand of
footwear at school.
My dad would say to me,
Right, if you sell 10 pairs this
week, Ill give you a percentage, or,
Ill get you that special Barbie you
want. So from the age of around
10 I would take the catalogues
in and say, Look, I can give
you a discount.
Every year I would gather
work experience with my father
in his olnces in Surrey. It was
great experience I learnt about
selling, accountancy, production,
everything, continues Aruna,
who gained further valuable
experience by pursuing a career
in investment banking before
embarking on her true dream of
establishing her own shoe empire.
So many girls say to me, Id
love to start a shoe company, I
love shoes so much. But it takes
more than that. Running your
own business is tough. For the
nrst two years I oion`t really sleep.
Your mind is whirring all the time
because theres so much to think
about.
Ive started to sleep now,
though. In order to look glam, you
have to get your sleep.
Enviably trim you have to
look after your body to keep your
energy levels up, and with her
long dark hair and almond eyes,
Arunas not the sort of woman to
go unnoticed, which makes her one
of the own best advertisements for
her brand.
FOOT SOLDIERS
The week before we meet she was in
the Swiss ski resort of Verbier, where
her crystal-encrusted Evi Aprs Ski
Boots (1,750 a pop Paris Hilton
has a pair) attracted plenty of
complimentary comments.
The nrst-class lounge at
airports is good, too, laughs
Aruna. I nno a lot ol women come
up to me there and ask where I got
my shoes from.
What Arunas fans seem to love
most about her shoes is that she
appears to have found the Holy
Grail for feet wow factor styles
that are actually comfortable
to wear.
After Goldie Hawn wore
the Swarovski crystal-covered
Cinderella shoe to a movie premiere,
she made a point of getting in touch
to tell Aruna, whose collections are
handmade in Venice: The minute
I put them on, I did not want to
take them off. They were so
comfortable, and for evening shoes
thats saying a lot.
The secret, Aruna reveals, is a
special plush leather padding that
supports the foot. Its made of
soft Italian nappa leather and took
me about six months to perfect.

Even at home, Aruna ies the ag for her company, wearing just one of her many hundreds of pairs of her own-label shoes (left).
She credits her celebrity client list which includes Pippa Middleton and Kate Hudson (above, middle) with helping to increase her
brands prole. Following Pippas choice of Arunas Lynn sandals at 2011s royal wedding (above left), sales went through the roof:
It put us on the worldwide stage, she says
Its strategically placed within the
shoes sock to give what we call a
cashmere-like comfort.
Its why were doing so well in
the bridal industry, because no
bride wants to be in discomfort on
her big day.
HEEL OF FORTUNE
Despite having been a hot favourite
at one point to design the Duchess
of Cambridges bridal shoes, that
particular accolade wasnt to be.
But Aruna believes her cashmere-
comfortable designs might be just
what Kate needs now, as the birth
ol her nrst baby oraws closer.
Of course, Id love to see
Kate wearing our shoes shes
a style icon and hasnt put a
foot wrong in terms of fashion.
She is in the highly pressurised
position of having to look utterly
fabulous at all times and succeeds,
says Aruna.
We will oennitely be ollering
her some ol our nat ballerina shoes
to run around in after the new
royal baby arrives in July. And we
will most likely create a lookbook
inspired by Kate, featuring shoes
suitable for young mothers, as I
am sure maternity and yummy-
mummy fashion will be of big
interest during her pregnancy.
Though discreet about her
relationship with Pippa who has
a lot of the designers shoes and
bags hers is the nrst name Aruna
mentions when asked which of her
clients she has become friends with.
Are they ladies who lunch
together? Maybe sometimes,
she says hesitantly. Its nice when
you meet a client whos lovely and
you stay in touch with.
She describes Princesses Beatrice
and Eugenie as very sweet and
Hollywood royalty Goldie Hawn
and daughter Kate Hudson
as so nice.
SOLE MATE
With her business taking her all
over the world she travels to
Italy every month, to Asia every
couple of months, and speaks
Italian, Russian, French, Hindi and
a bit of Spanish what about
nnoing her own prince? Does she
have time for romance?
I am seeing someone, but Id
rather not mention his name, says
Aruna. Hes a businessman. Im
so committed to my business that
I can only date people who are as
passionate about their work as I
am, otherwise it causes problems.
I tend to date men who have
their own companies or work
in high-pressure environments
such as banking, because
they understand.
She smiles coyly, before adding:
And yeah, I mean its also fun to
date abroad
But as much as she adores her
opulent jet-set life, Aruna admits
shes always excited to get back
to her plush Chelsea apartment,
which she`s just nnisheo renovating
with the help of interior designer
Emily Freya.
Its such a great area to live
in theres always something
going on. And I love the calming
colours in this apartment and all
the crystal a girls got to have
sparkle in all areas of her life.
The nrst thing I always oo when
I get home lrom a trip is ning
open my shoe closet. Im like,
Mummys home! Thats when I
really know Im home.

Then came the big break ol nve years

she replies, I think I`m trying to oo so

any other way. I know it sounds clichd

The unconventional bit she refers to
are the roles she juggles, usually oscillating
between the dark art nouveau protagonist
who has the brains and the bod and the item-
number who could give even Malaika Arora
Khan a run for her money. An interview on
TV along with her co-star Arjun Rampal for
the nlm Inkaar reveals a dilemma Chitrangda
faces in her career at the moment. When the
duo is asked, You two are essentially good-
looking people. Do you nno that in the nlm
inoustry the nip sioe is that sometimes people
dont take you seriously as far as the acting is
concerned? Rampal goes on and delivers a
charmingly droll prose stating that hed like
to believe otherwise and that is a problem
hes gone past, I would have died, I would
have been so frustrated if people couldnt see
beyond that, he states. But when it comes
time for Chitrangda to answer the same
question all the viewer gets is a muddled,
Yeah, well I guess Ill take it for now. Lets just
leave it at that.
TO LOOK OR NOT TO LOOK?
Could it be that her good looks are a deterrent
to people taking her seriously? Well only
the cinematic gods would know that. But a
quick search on Youtube gives anyone the
simple answer. With only 10,000 odd hits, the
serious TV interview pales in comparison to
Chitrangdas other clips which prove to be far
more popular with hundreds of thousands
and in some cases even millions of views.
Suggestively titled by users, Chitrangda
Hot scene, and so on, there are dozens of
videos that emphatically scream the fact that
the general internet-savvy viewer is more
interested in Chitrangdas body than her body
of work. Add to all this the fact that theres
atleast one hot scene in any movie she does
and you can see why Chitrangda is viewed
in the light she is. Theres the love scene in
a changing room with Sharman Joshi (a poor
mans Danny Devito) in Sorry Bhai in 2008,
the scene with Akshay Kumar in Desi Boyzz in
2011, with Arjun Rampal in Inkaar, with John
Abraham in I, Me Aur Main and the scenes
with Shiny Ahuja, Kay Kay Menon and a
much thinner Ram Kapur in her oebut nick
Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi.
I`m oennitely looking lorwaro to oillerent
roles. I think all actors want to do different
things, being versatile is the biggest high
thriller to comedy to action. Working with
good directors is important though, they are
the new heroes, content is the new hero, she
says when asked about what shes looking
forward to career-wise.
Who are her favourite actors we wonder,
to which Chitrangda quips, Meryl Streep
and Anthony Hopkins in Hollywood and
Mr Bachchan and the late Smita Patil here.
Did the artsy Shekhar Kapur really compare
Chitrangda to Smita Patil once, we ask, It
was a huge compliment, he sat me down and
explaineo how I ngureo my cralt ano how I
ended up acting. I remember that dinner with
him, she recalls of the time when Kapur
showered praise and said shed outdone the
once famous Patil.
WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS
Blissfully oblivious of any domestic ups and
downs we ask Chitrangda about her husband
and how the two of them met. I dont want
to get into that. Lets just stay away from that
angle, she says while we realise we may have
touched a raw nerve somewhere. But what
about the angle of the story? The one where
Chitrangda manages to do it all, be a mum, a
wife and have the burgeoning career. We sniff
trouble in paradise. Dont make headlines
out of my marriage, Chitrangda warns,
as we nod our head unaware. Keeping with
our promise to the ingenue we wont go any
further on the topic. It is afterall her private
life and while the media would like nothing
more than to get the low-down on that, we feel
its better to just gloss over. Its all over Google
for all those wanting to dig more the truth,
the lies, the media cook-ups and so on so forth.
You make up your mind.
Ive been learning skeet shooting from
Mehraj Khan, says Chitrangda when we ask
her about how she keeps herself busy. Yeah,
I use a 28 inch Beretta shotgun, she adds as
we reach the sudden realisation that this lady
is probably not someone to be messed with.
When Im not doing that, I paint charcoal
sketches of horses, she says matter-of-factly.
With a few nods of her head and some
more quick replies we gather that Chitrangda
also kickboxes, loves going to Bali for holidays
and is particularly partial to Dan Brown
novels. We bid her goodbye as we step out of
her makeshift make-up room the Poonawalla
lounge, on loan from Adar Poonawalla for the
day. Chitrangda on the other hand still has the
shoot to nnish ano she puts on her warorobe,
gets a few more touch ups and goes forth to
enact her ride into the unknown one where
even the sun seems to hold still for her with
baited breath asking, Is there a hot scene on
the horizon?

Poonam Bhagats Spring/Summer
2013 collection called A Slice of

is inspired by the tapestries of
Uzbekistan, predominantly the
Suzani an embroidered and
decorative tribal textile. She uses
this inspiration on Shivani Wazir,
a television anchor, actor and
compere who does justice to the
three-layereo outnt as she walks
with a dancers grace even as
the design undulates like a wave
matching steps with her. Shivani is
an exponent of theatre and dance.
She can emote and essay what I
have to say through this collection
with ease and conviction. Besides,
her face is essentially Indian,
very beautiful, and evocative of a
Raja Ravi Verma painting!, says
Poonam about her muse.
Shivani is used to donning
oillerent outnts lor her oiverse
professional roles as a dancer, actor
and theatre-person but feels at home
with this outnt. Foonam`s work
represents her character. Shes a lot
of fun and there is a lot of depth to
her. In fact every time I have worn
a Poonam Bhagat design Ive had
this feeling of being well-turned
out. Explains Poonam, Shivanis
outnt has a lront open tunic with a
voluminous shift under it in ivory
with red borders that are cut on the
bias and undulate under the tunic.
It essays the embroidery of Suzanis
beautifully. Weve embroidered
nowers using anchor threaos ano
various dori techniques all along the
hem. The colours are evocative of
the Suzani and couching in black
anchor and ivory dori is added to
create a three-dimensional effect.
A black sharara creates some drama
ano aoos more nair ano balance,
along with a black dyed yoke on
the tunic. All the materials used are
silk chanderi.
Shivani loved the paradox of
conservative yet bold that her
outnt represents. I love the solio
colours and patterns. Its very
much like Poonam herself, solid,
she says endorsing the designer and
her work. Poonam compliments
the look in an outnt lrom the same

Says Punit, When things start to
look all too similar, you can trust
Pankaj and Nidhi to offer a unique

because even though you can

Everything is unique and their use

Also exclusive is what they created

Together the three form a mutual

Punit, despite her good-looks,

Apparently this diet, which

BOOK MARK
TASTE OF TRADITION
OLEANDER GIRL IS A POWERFUL LOVE STORY THAT BEAUTIFULLY PORTRAYS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN
THE EAST MEETS WEST, AMIDST RELIGIOUS HAVOC AND FAMILIAL FEUDS. HELLO! TUNES IN TO
AUTHOR CHITRA BANERJEE DIVAKARUNI WHO TELLS US MORE ABOUT HER MOST RECENT TOME
T
he book demonstrates
the disparity caused
by differences between the
new and old India. Can you
elaborate on this theme?
On my last few visits to India,
it struck me how rapidly India
is changing, rushing headlong
to take its rightful place in the
21
st
century. Many advances
are occurring, physically in the
city landscapes, virtually in the
work world, and psychologically
in peoples minds. But rapid
change always comes at a cost in
a culture as ancient as India with
ingrained and valuable traditions.
It is this cost ano this connict that
I wanted to portray through the
characters of Korobi and Rajat,
the protagonists. Rajat comes
from a very progressive, business-
savvy family. Korobis family roots
go deep into old Bengal. When
they fall in love, they must learn to
value each others point of view.
Tho Brst hnlI oI tho book is
narrated by the protagonist
Korobi, but the second half
is narrated in third person.
What is the reason behind
this change in narrator?
The book has nve narrative
points of view woven throughout
the text Korobi, her
grandmother, Rajat, his mother,
and Asif, Rajats family chauffeur.
Korobi gets the nrst person`s point
of view because I want readers
to feel her emotions, discoveries,
shocks and joys most closely. The
others are important because their
points of view contrast ironically
with each other, but I wanted an
authorial angle through which
they are projected.
The central themes of
Oleander Girl take references
from your life and family. Do
you Bnd it onsior to writo
about things you know and
have experienced?
It is not a matter of being easier;
its a matter of writing what I feel
deeply in my bones. Sometimes
its harder to write whats close
to you, to gain a perspective on
things you feel strongly about.
But the customs of Bengal and
especially Kolkata are in my
blood. I have to write about them,
though certainly I write about
other themes and characters from
other cities and ethnicities as well,
such as in the Palace of Illusions
(about the Mahabharat), and One
Amazing Thing (about multi-racial
characters in America).
The setting of the story is
one of political trauma and
unrest; it was the year of the
tragic Gujarat riots and 9/11.
What made you choose such a
time to set your book in?
One of the major themes of
Oleander Girl is the terrible cost of
religious and racial intolerance. I
wanted to examine this problem,
which is a worldwide one, from
the viewpoint of two different
countries. Characters experience
the violence of prejudice on many
levels, political and personal. The
book will, I hope, make the readers
think about this issue that continues
to plague us today.
The book is an ode to
differences of all sorts
between traditional and
modern, between the East and
West. Do these contradictions
occur in your personal
life too?
You have phrased my intention
very well, and yes, my own life as
an Indian living in America, an
Indian-American balanced between
two very different cultures and
sets of values, is wonderfully and
interestingly full of complications
and contradictions!
Are there any challenges being
an America-based author of
Indian origin?
I think all writers face the
challenge of communicating ones
vision ol a nctional worlo in a way
that readers will understand and,
more importantly, care about. As
a writer writing about two cultures
for audiences all over the world
(my books are now translated into
29 languages) I have to do this
twice as much.
You are also an activist in the
Bold oI donostic violonco.
What are your views on the
current state of violence and
sexual abuse in India? In
your opinion, what steps can
we take to control the rising
levels of abuse?
I am deeply saddened and indeed
appalled by the recent cases of
violence and female sexual abuse
in Inoia. The nrst immeoiate
change (which I feel is beginning
to happen) is tougher laws against
perpetrators, carried out very
nrmly. The secono change which
will take more time (but is also
beginning to happen as we see
from the protests on many levels)
is a mind-change, an acceptance
of women as valuable members
of society worthy of nurture and
respect. (I hope that books like
mine, which place strong, complex
women at their center, do a little
bit to create this change). This
said, I must point out that violence
against women is unfortunately a
problem in just about all countries,
not only India.
Which are your favourite
authors and novels?
I have many. Among South
Asian/South Asian American
writers: Amitav Ghosh, Rohinton
Mistry (in Canada), Anita Desai,
Mohsin Hamid, Vikram Chandra.
Among American authors, I
love the multi-cultural visions
of Maxine Hong Kingston,
Toni Morrison and Cristina
Garcia. Ive learned so much
from writers like Tim OBrien,
Margaret Atwood and Elizabeth
Strout. Italo Calvino remains an
inspiration. My classic favourites
are Tolstoy and Tagore.
What inspires you
to write about
Indian-centric themes?
That is what I know and love
and understand. I am particularly
moved by our complex mythology,
which I try to weave into my work
in many ways.
Can you tell us a little bit
about your upcoming novel?
It will be a novel based on the
Ramayana with Sita at its centre, a
little like Palace of Illusions, which
had Panchaali as the narrator.

A dazzling whos who of royalty line up to mark the investiture of Willem-Alexander and Maxima as King and Queen of the Netherlands. Unlike most such
occasions, which tend to be sombre, following the death of a monarch, this was a joyous event, as the much-loved Queen Beatrix handed over to a son
she felt was well ready for the role. The end of her 33-year reign was marked by two days of lavish celebrations, attended by senior royals, especially the
dynamic young kings and queens in waiting. In this image, the new Dutch monarchs take centre stage, with Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall

HELLO! JUNE 2013 58
O
n Tuesday 30 April, the
morning after Queen
Beatrixs farewell banquet,
a touching scene played out
in the royal palace. A visibly
moved Willem-Alexander gently
squeezed his mothers hand after
she signed the act of abdication,
bringing, at the stroke of a
pen, an end to her reign and a
beginning to his. A deafening
cry of approval and joy went up
from the 20,000-strong crowd
crammed shoulder-to-shoulder in
the Dam, the main square outside
the palace, as the Dutch people
applauded their beloved Queen
and welcomed her successor,
who at 46 is Europes youngest
monarch ano his country`s nrst
King in over 120 years.
The cheers grew louder still
as mother and son and the new
Queen Maxima emerged onto the
palace balcony to greet the people.
Beatrix, now a Princess, blinked
back the tears as she presented her
son to the rapturous crowds.
I am happy and grateful to
present to you your new King,
Willem-Alexander, she said.
Turning to her, he said: Dear
mother, you have given the kingdom
33 moving and inspired years,
which we are intensely grateful for.
Thank you. After exchanging a
kiss with her son, Beatrix then left
the balcony and public life to make
way for a new generation of royals
as Willem-Alexander and Maximas
three young daughters, including
the new heir, the self-assured
nine-year-old Princess Catharina-
Amalia, joined their parents
on the balcony.
GREAT EXPECTATIONS
Queen Maxima, who has won the
hearts of the Dutch and added a
refreshing dash of Latin glamour
to an otherwise low-key monarchy
since she wed Willem-Alexander
in 2002, shimmered regally in a
beige gossamer dress embroidered
with crystal sequins designed by
Edouard Vermeulen of Belgian
fashion house Natan, while her
daughters Princess Amalia, Princess
Ariane and Princess Alexia wore
adorable matching yellow frocks.
Onlooker Eric Paol summed
up the general mood: Were all
very moved. Willem-Alexander is
making a big step towards a new
type of monarchy and Maxima
just radiates kindness. All our
expectations are so high.
Little Amalia beamed broadly
as she waveo connoently to the
throngs of people she will one day
reign over. The royal family then
left the balcony to prepare for the
main event of the day, the formal
investiture of Willem-Alexander as
King at the citys De Nieuwe Kerk,
where around 2,000 dignitaries
were gathering. In what was the
largest gathering of royals since
the Queens Diamond Jubilee in
London last year, 30 members
from 18 royal houses took their
places inside the medieval church
for the ceremony.
The Prince of Wales and his wife,
the Duchess ol Cornwall, new

Philip Treacy. It was, perhaps, an
emotional day for Charles: as heir,
he had represented the United
Kingdom at Beatrixs investiture
in 1980; now, at 64, an age when
most people are approaching
retirement, he has yet to take on
the role he has been preparing for
all his life.
Joining Charles and Camilla
were Europes other royal heirs,
Denmarks Prince Frederik and
his glamorous wife Princess Mary,
Prince Haakon and Princess
Mette-Marit from Norway and

Shortly before 2.00pm, the
Dutch royals set off from the

Close by Beatrixs side was

They were followed by the
new King and Queen, escorted
by Heralds of Arms. A sparkling
Queen Maxima had changed into
a suitably royal cobalt-blue gown
by Dutch designer Jan Taminiau,
accessorised with an heirloom
diamond and sapphire tiara given
to her by Beatrix. King Willem-
Alexander wore a tail coat with
white tie under the royal ermine-
trimmed mantle, which has been in
use since 1815.
The newly-minted King didnt,
however, get to wear his crown
as, constitutionally speaking, this
was an investiture rather than a
coronation. It was displayed on a
ceremonial table along with the
sceptre, orb, sword of state and
national standard.
As he told guests how he foresaw
his new role as monarch, Willem-
Alexander paid an emotional tribute
to Beatrix as both the guardian of
Dutch democracy and as a devoted
mother. You were utterly dedicated
to the outies ol your olnce. But
you were also a daughter, a wife, a
mother and head of the family
Sometimes you felt torn, but you
combined your many duties with
great inspiration. Even in times of
personal sorrow you supported us all
in the most loving and dependable
manner. Overwhelmed with
emotion, Beatrix smiled as she
fought back tears.
A TRIBUTE TO MAXIMA
The new King also had words
of praise for his wife and Queen.
I acknowledge how deeply
happy I am to have the support
of my wife, Maxima She
has embraced our country and
become a Dutchwoman among
the Dutch people.
Following his speech and
oath to uphold the constitution,
Dutch MPs and senators, and
dignitaries from the Caribbean
countries that form part of the
Kingdom of the Netherlands
Aruba, Curaao and St Maarten
stood up to swear allegiance
to their new King. As the guests
applauded and the national anthem
was played, tens of thousands
watching the event on giant screens
throughout Amsterdam erupted
into loud cheers. The royal party,
accompanied by their guests,
then returned to the palace for
a reception, before re-emerging
in the late afternoon for a festive
river pageant.
There Queen Maxima once
again wowed her people in a
beautiful burgundy and nude lace
gown by Jan Taminiau. Young
Amalia, Alexia and Ariane were
still sporting their cobalt-blue
swing dresses, but fended off the
chill with camel wraps as they
boarded the royal barge. A stately
notilla ol 20 boats accompanieo
the royals on their two-hour
cruise along the River Ij, while
sports and music stars performed
on the bank. Tens of thousands
had also gathered on bridges
and along the waterfront to greet
their new King and Queen, and
as the pageant drew to a close at
the Muziekgebouw auditorium, a
formation of Royal Netherlands
Air Force F-16s zoomed
past in salute.
Inside the auditorium, the
royals and their guests were
treated to a celebratory banquet
hosted by Dutch Prime Minister
Mark Rutte, who praised the
former Queen Beatrix and added
that very many people will have
wonderful memories of her 33-
year reign.
His sentiment was shared by
the 70,000 revellers gathered
lor a music-nlleo party in the
Museumplein square, and the
approximately 800,000 people
who hao nockeo to Amsteroam
to paint the town orange for
the historic occasion. With the
festivities going on into the early
hours, the Dutch people had
not merely one great night to
remember but over three decades
of duty and service rendered by
their beloved former Queen.
Were sad to see her go,
said Amsterdam resident
Bonney Wassing. But were
happy that she can now focus
on her grano-chiloren, on nnally
being a grandmother.

A
s April-May, the months of
travel set in, I found myself
in a spin of airplane rides and
checking into hotels.
The Ritz Carlton in Dubai
reminds me of a modern hotel
in Paris. From the delicious
onion and tomato Tarte tatin
to the dal tadka at their nouveau
French brasserie, Can Can that
beautifully blends Renaissance
furniture in their rooms with the
ultra mooern corrioor nankeo by
glass and marble, which leads to
their plush spa. Here I enjoyed
the state of the art Natura Bissa
facial, one of the best so far. The
other memory is that of one at
the SK-II salon in Singapore off
Orchard road.
As we exhibit at the Bridal
Fair in Dubai year after year, I
nno mysell spenoing more time
looking at the goodies available at
this venue, which generally caters
to the Sheikhas and the locals by
ano large. Brioes-to-be have a nelo
day shopping here as they plan
their wedding, as there is a large
variety in every department. And
if you have a penchant for corsets,
all shapes and sizes are available
here with the glittery ones up
for sale. Khaled Khalil being
my favourite.
Talking about designers,
Maheka Mipuri hosted a high
tea soire where she showed-off
her chikan ensembles as well as
sarees with lace borders. The
room was full of ladies from South
Mumbai chatting in different
corners showing-off their Croco
Bambini Birkins (Ostrich and
leather long gone!) over chai and
sushi. I met Poonam Dhillon who
was surrounded by friends and
had celebrated her big birthday
the night before at the Westin
hotel in Goregaon.
The same evening Renu
Chainani launched her seasonal
collection of Eastern Treasures.
Her crowd was a totally different
one from the afternoon tea. The
common factor being Meena
Raheja, who looked busy picking
up pieces of furniture. Sushmita
Sen radiated positive energy. Mozez
Singh lookeo lean ano nt. He was
on his annual two month detox
programme. We talked about his trip
to Japan where he went to celebrate
his birthday solo, Zen style. He left
from there, making tons of friends
and acquiring a beautiful tattoo, one
of nine cherry blossoms denoting
Peace. The after party was at the
Elbow Room a bar in Bandra run
by Dino Moreas brother Nicolo
Morea. Hrithik dropped in for a bit,
as he is in the last leg of wrapping
Krish 3. I believe this actor hardly
steps out if he is in the midst of a
shoot or a show. A true professional!
That night I chatted with Maheep
Singh over dangerously delicious
pizzas. She was off to London with
a bunch of her good friends to
celebrate her birthday there.
Anil Agarwal celebrated his
daughters engagement with a
splendid difference. Instead of
having a Bollywood performance
he had the story of Shakuntala
staged (Amar Chitra Katha style)
albeit with dramatic special effects.
Rani Mukerji played the lead role.
Karan Johar playeo rapio nre with
the bride and bridegroom in his
usual candid and humorous style,
bringing out the story of how the
couple met. At dinner later, Rani
Mukerji, looking pretty in a white
saree, enjoyed all the compliments
about her performance.
The other lady who sparkled
in white was Sridevi at a party
hosted for her by Subrata Roy
to celebrate her receiving the
Padma Shri award. A big screen
was set up where snippets of all
the superstars movies were being
screened. Over shwarmas and
champagne my friend Madhoo
Shah and I chatted with Boney
Kapoor who reminisced about
the times he had worked on
movies with Sridevi. Stars of
romance showed up in his eyes for
his lady love.
The Metropolitan Ball in New
York City was one of the major
events to look forward to. Attended
by the whos who of Hollywood,
the after party was at the Boom
Boom Room at the Standard
Hotel in the Meatpacking district.
Before the party I had dinner at
the new Japanese restaurant called
Cherry at Dream Downtown
Hotel with my friends Vikram
Chatwal and Mrunalini. The food
was delicious and the ambience
intoxicating, the dcor inspired
by the old world subtle charm of
Japan. Mrunalini hao six outnts,
which she had designed for Top
Shop couture that was worn at the
Met ball by celebrities.
We met Christopher Vault
at the bar of the Mark Hotel
(in the upper 70s) later that
night. He had spent most of that
part of the evening talking to a
stunning lady wearing a long red
silhouetted dress with a longer
trail. She donned a headgear with
a black net extending out covering
half her face. Quite dramatic,
it propelled her a step up into
ber glamour.
Donna DCruz, the celebrated
DJ who plays at most of the
celebrity parties in New York is
now entering the line of yoga
and wellbeing and is soon going
to be starting classes in the city.
I met her at Daman Chatwals
high tea, which the lovely lady
hosted in the lobby under the
grandeur of the high glass ceiling
at the Plaza Hotel, (one of their
recent acquisitions,. Donna nlleo
me in about the premiere of The
Great Gatsby over deliciously warm
scones and strawberry jam. I also
bumped into Amitabh Bachchan
in New York who had been there
for the same. The man easily

Shah grew up with an exposure to a
variety ol navours at home Inoian,
Nepalese ano European to some extent.
But oespite all these aromas surrounoing
her, her conventional lamily oiscourageo
her to keep oll the stove ano concentrate
on the books. But Shreyaa`s interest in
looo was so compelling that she`s taken
to cooking with as much vehemence
as a Iormula One oriver on the racing
tracks. She armeo hersell with a Coroon
Bleu oiploma in cooking ,lrom Thailano,
belore starting Shreyaa`s Kitchen,` a
private catering company launcheo a
year-ano-hall ago that has been growing
lrom strength to strength. Recently she`s
teameo up with Alice Helme ano Lucy
Hollioay, two enterprising English girls
living in Delhi who run Damsom`, a
Catering ano Events Company. The
trio is proving to be quite the team
with Shreyaa cooking up a storm in
the kitchen while Alice ano Lucy set up
beautilul tables ano oress oream venues
on request. HELLO captures Shreyaa`s
journey over lamb chops, chilleo white
wine ano oesserts to oie-lor.
The journey: Shreyaa remembers
travelling all over the worlo while
spenoing her early chilohooo with her
granoparents ,her granolather Maharja
Kumar Sharoul Bikram Shah was a
career oiplomat, ano taking in the sights,
sounos ano navours ol many oillerent
cultures. She conlesses however, I oio
not grow up in a house ol loooies but I
have been cooking since I was 1o-years-
olo. Over the years when she set up her
home, Shreyaa loveo entertaining ano
taking over the kitchen for house parties
but only with assistance from an army of
stall lor chopping ano cleaning. Alter
my chiloren became a little oloer, I hao
more time, so I oio a Coroon Bleu course
lor three months in Thailano. This is
where I oevelopeo my love lor both
Thai ano European looo ano now they
are the locus ol many ol our oishes,
explains Shreyaa.
Unforgettable dinner memories:
Some ol Shreyaa`s memories ol lavish
oinners have been lrom their summer
home in Nainital, where her parents hao
the most talkeo-about parties. Lots ol
my mother`s lrienos ano lamily visit our
house in Nainital ouring summers. The
looo is always very simple but oelicious.
It mostly incluoes Nepalese looo such
as Bhutekomasu, ,spicy garlic navoureo
lamb,, Kankro achar ,cucumber pickle,,
Charasandheko ,colo pickleo chicken,,
she shares about Nepalese oelicacies
Our style is very simple, contemporary and European, says Shreyaa.
The modern approach is to keep the colours down to one or two shades.
Fine tableware, soft candles and owers create a warm and sultry mood
for a beautiful summer alfresco dinner. Seen here are Lucy Holliday and
Alice Helm with Shreyaa Shah
in the kitchen that have become
staples thanks to her mother
and grandmother both hailing
from Nepals royal families.
Shreyaa continues, I have lots of
memories of family dinners and
friends who I have grown up with
many of them also have homes
there. The parties in Nainital have
always revolved around everyone
singing all kinds of classic songs
by the bonnre. It`s a very happy
place for me and I have lots of
fond memories from there.
Shreyaas perfect dinner
setting for summer: She
oennitely likes to keep things
simple. She maintains, I love
things that are simple so clean
white linen table cloths, nowers,
napkins lots of candles make for my
kind of a table. She recommends
the range at GoodEarth for their
wonderful china.
Fresh Food: For Indian
summers, Shreyaa recommends
avoiding traditionally heavy meals
that most of us are accustomed to.
Her idea of a summer gourmet
dinner would be no-fuss, light
and airy food that is good to taste
and well-presented. For starters
she says, Smoked salmon is a
great canap as its light and the
lemon juice on top makes it quite
refreshing. Dinner should also
Smoked Salmon on rye bread with cream cheese and black caviar

include healthy and seasonal fruits
and vegetables. She shares, I like
eating food that makes us feel good,
especially in the heat. So Id go
with lots of vegetables, watermelon
and feta salad, pear crostini is
another favourite at the moment.
I am always trying new things and
changing my ideas, she elaborates.
Shreyaa also highly recommends a
yummy quinoa salad with Iranian
lime, mango and coconut rice salad,
maybe lemon grass and goat cheese
raviolis. I made this the other day,
they were so good! she exults about
her raviolis.
The perfect wine: With my
love for Thai food, I think a good
Riesling or Gewrztraminer, would
be delicious, with the sweetness in the
grapes complimenting the delicate
but spicy navours, trills Shreyaa.
Summer desserts: In this heat
its all about canap desserts, no
one wants to sit and eat a huge slice
of chocolate tart with ice cream. I
would choose something fresh like a
lime and basil sorbet or even mango
and sweet lime. I love the mango
season, she explains. Her perfect
ngure is a sure inoication that she
professes indulgence with some
amount of consciousness. She also
picks Pavlovas or Eton mess for a
perfect ending.
Serves 4
INGREDIENTS
8 small or 4 large lamb rib
chops or tenderloin
3 tbsp mustard
1 tsp black or salt-free
seasoned pepper
2 tbsp olive oil
1 head garlic chopped coarsely
cup pomegranate molasses
2 tbsp red wine
LAMB CHOPS WITH
GARLIC AND
POMEGRANATE MOLASSES
METHOD
1. Brush one side of the lamb chops with half of the
mustard, then sprinkle with half of the pepper.
2. In a 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat, heat the olive
oil until it shimmers. Place the chops in the skillet, mustard-
and-pepper side down. Brush the tops with the reserved
mustard and sprinkle with the reserved pepper.
3. Cook the chops until theyre nicely browned, about eight
minutes. Reduce heat to medium. Flip the chops over and
cook them until they are done to your taste (125 degrees for
rare). Remove the chops and place on a plate or platter.
4. Add the chopped garlic to the skillet and cook it,
scraping up the browned bits on the bottom, until the cloves
are softened and fragrant, about 2 minutes.
5. Stir in the pomegranate molasses to the pan, scraping
the bottom as you go, until it bubbles and froths.
6. Stir in the red wine, then turn the heat to high until the
sauce thickens, for 2-4 minutes.
Spoon the sauce over the chops and serve.
The way food
is served can be
visually exciting and

MAYA PATNAIK
When selecting crockery, choose colours to
compliment each other and make the food
look as mouthwatering as it tastes, Maya
says. She prefers a rustic and informal feel
using at coloured tableware and a bunch of
peonies, roses and poppies to usher in the
romance of summer. All the tableware and
owers are from GoodEarth
F
ood makes you who you are. Although, it has
made politicians, successful businessmen and
entrepreneurs out of Maya Patnaik Sibias entire stock,
it has given Maya the ultimate break she was seeking,
alter she sullereo a major seven-year-itch in a hi-nying
advertising career.
Having worked in New York and Mumbai, Maya
Patnaik gave up her swish boardroom role for the kitchen
counter, in a way that hasnt just been deeply satisfying
but is also reaping great rewards for her. She started
Feliz Papilles, a commercial kitchen in Delhi supplying
mainly baked products on personal orders and is already
a name to reckon with among food fundamentalists in
the Capital. She shares some secrets from the bakers
basket and HELLO! comes back more informed and
satiated after a high-tea with the ptissier.
Crisp memories: Mayas father Gudu Patnaik hails
from Orissa while her mother Cristina is half-Mexican,
half-Norwegian. Her grandfather Biju Patnaik was one
ol Orissa`s most innuential Chiel Ministers, but she likes
to talk about her vast genetic pool and its gastronomical
innuences, rather than owell on her political lineage.
Taking the family tradition of bringing in new cultural
elements through its members, Maya married Ranjeet
Sibia, an investment banker hailing from Punjab in April
2011. And dont forget my paternal grandmother was
from Kashmir. Were a family of cooks where we start
planning lunch as soon as we nnish breaklast. Even my
father is a good cook, she adds. The family with its
members from different parts of the country and world
has brought in their distinct menus and Mayas personal
kitchen appears to be a melting pot of all these diverse
culinary cultures. I have family all over the world. As
a result I have grown up being exposed to a diversity
of food thanks to family as well as my travels. At home
we had good Indian food thanks to a Bengali Baruah
cook; and my mother brought in the Mexican elements
with the roasts and stews and my father also made some
European dishes from time-to-time, explains Maya.
So does she have a favourite story related to food and
baking, which is her forte now? Well we were in Brittany
on a family holiday and it wasnt just the breathtaking
views that I remember but also their fresh breads they
make the best breads and seafood. Other than that, New
York is a place where I oiscovereo many new navours. I
trieo Sashimi lor the nrst time there ano realiseo that I
likeo the navour ol raw nsh. While I was working there,
I enrolled for a short-term cooking course. I also loved
exploring the farmers markets there, she elaborates.
Farm fresh: Maya says shes lucky to have grown up
on farm-fresh produce. Her parents grow vegetables in
their farm in Delhi and her father even rears corn-fed
free-range chickens these days. I am lucky I grew up on
this and now use this produce for my commercial kitchen
as well, she says. So whether its broccoli, beetroot,
tomatoes, sugar-cane, spinach, mustard or even chickens,
the Patnaiks make sure they are a part of the journey of
the looo that eventually nnos its place on their oining
table from its raw and organic essence the food re-
incarnates in different forms right in front of them.
The baking journey: After she hit a dead-end having
given her all to advertising, she slowly inched towards
food, an area she was a natural at. But for a career,
Sprigs of mint and sliced
oranges adorn a jug of
refreshing herbal iced-tea
Sumptuous cupcakes
Maya needed to arm herself. So I went to Le Cordon Bleu (Paris) and
enrolled for a course. After that I apprenticed at restaurants such as
Le Petit Maison in London and hotels in India (Maurya and Aman)
before formally launching Feliz Papille, she explains. Feliz Papille is a
commercial kitchen which has items from the bakery such as the orange
bundt cake, spiked dark chocolate torte and quiches. I started when I
was 31 while other people in my class were about 10 years younger. I
had to overlook that and concentrate on the fact that in a short span I
had to catch up on all the time lost, she admits.
Tea-time table: For me what is important is to have an intimate
and eclectic group of people together, says Maya. For summers, Maya
proposes bringing in colours through lresh nowers, lruits ano looo. Ior
table linen I prefer neutral colours. The tablecloth should be used as
a canvass, which pops up all the hues when the table is accessorised. I
nno that people are olten too obsesseo with the ioea ol covering tables.
Sometimes, its just good to leave it bare, especially if its a nice natural-
wooo table. I like lragrant nowers ano lresh lruits to oecorate. They give
a fresh look, recommends Maya.
Some coolers at tea-time: Apart from the regular cuppa that is
every Indians favourite, the traditional iced-tea makes it to Mayas table.
But she adds that the Agua Fresca, a Mexican lemonade shes grown
up having is a great addition, in case one is looking out for something
different to cool with in soaring temperatures.
Tea-time menu: Maya nlleo the table with loaos ol light tea
sandwiches, tartlets, soft moist cakes with notes of citrus in them
and used mangos, the seasons favourite fruit in the rustic mango
and mascarpone roll. I like open sandwiches for summers. They are
not heavy. In fact, I roast whatever is usually deep-fried and alter the
preparation methods of any dish that is likely to be heavy. For example
the Quiche Lorraine I prepareo was airy as I soulneo it. Also small
portions are very important, she recommends.

15 gms boiling water
200-250 gms Mascarpone

Once the cake is in the oven, you can start working on the

Taste the mixture and add more sugar if necessary (make
sure you account for the sweetness of the mangoes too).

reah Narang grew up in Kolkatas culture of
entertaining at home, away from the ritual of
oining at nve-star hotels that other big cities are prone
to. Her mother and society hostess Sunita Kumar
always kept a gooo table ano lather Naresh Kumar
,well-known tennis player ol his oays, emphasiseo
ntness ano healthy looo. Freah has combineo the
best ol the two worlos that she`s inheriteo lrom her
parents and has earned a Michelin starred chef s
reputation among her lrienos in Delhi lor serving
the healthiest yet most delicious food at home.
Trained at Londons Cordon Bleu school, her
specialties include homemade ice creams for which
she accents personal orders. At other times, she just
uses her culinary skills for entertaining at home or
consulting top clubs such as Anton Mosimann`s in
London.
Passion and profession:
The nrst time Freah went to the Coroon Bleu
school for training was 30 years ago. Recently, she
oecioeo to brush up her knowleoge ano enrolleo lor
skills and techniques course in London to keep up
with the changing times. From cooking at Antonio
Mossimo`s club in Lonoon to bracing lor another
new assignment in Lonoon, Freah`s interest in
cooking brings ample new challenges ano exciting
opportunities on her plate. I am consulting for a
club calleo Grace, in central Lonoon`s Belgravia.
They are coming up with an Ayurveoic Inoian
week ano I am giving them a clean, light, healthy
ano nutritious menu lor it, she explains. She
started cooking when she was around 14 and made
brownies, which were oevoureo by her siblings.
She then graouateo to complex recipes such as her
mum`s version ol Bakeo Alaska, a thorough hit
from the Kumars kitchen.
A summer lunch table:
My mother always kept a gooo table ano we
grew up being exposeo to gooo looo right lrom
the beginning, remembers Freah. Ano gooo
looo has to be presenteo well. She explains, I
am a casual person, so I like the table to be neat
ano uncomplicateo. I preler bullet settings to keep
it simpler. Also the crockery ,see picture, is not
overwhelming. It`s summery ano pretty. Freah also
believes that the looo on the table aoos to the look.
Colours are very important lor me. So I useo a
white chikankari tablecloth ano maoe sure that the
food had all the colours. From seasonal greens
to beetroot, oranges ano mangoes, Freah suggests
aooing a oiversity ol hues in the looo to create a
lresh looking ano inviting table.
Punch of a lunch:
Although I love colo soups ano lresh summer salaos,
I oo not like a colo table. So I mix temperatures.
Typically I`o serve colo soup ano salaos with a
warm quiche. Also, I try and use as much seasonal
vegetables ano lruits as possible, she recommenos.
Ior salaos, Freah ooes oressings with little oil mixeo
with lresh lruit extracts. I also oo not believe in a
no-carb oiet. I love having breao with my soup
so a gazpacho teameo with lresh breao is great,
says Freah. But she makes sure the looo sits easy
on the stomach ano lor those aovises on going easy
on heavy ingreoients ano artincial aooenoums. In
soups I olten substitute cream with skimmeo milk,
she says. Freah`s homemaoe ice-creams are also
healthier versions maoe without eggs, stabilizers
ano preservatives.
Preah chooses lots of white to create a calm mood. She keeps
the linen deliberately simple using a chikankari tablecloth
with tone on white embroidery and Wedgwood crockery with
a wild strawberry print that captures the mood of summer
perfectly. The beautiful ower arrangement seen here is done

I
t was an unusual royal ceremony,
wherein nine-year-old prince
Lakshya Raj Singh of Jaipur was

The event was performed under

D
avid Beckham; the international superstar. The
legend. The style icon whos a treat to look at.
His career has undoubtedly been illustrious and hes
had a great run, but while the football world throws
up their hands to mourn Beckhams retirement, the
fashionistos can continue to rejoice, because his role
as a style icon will never fade!
1999: David looked like the boy-next-door with
blonde bangs and soft features way back in 1999. It
was in the late 90s, when he was in his early 20s that
his path to superstardom began, but with regard to
his style, he still had to morph from the cutie to the
hottie. Looking at his picture, its hard to believe that
an almost high school-looking David was already
becoming a oao lor the nrst time
2001: David has
chopped off his
medium-length blonde
hair, making way for a
bold avataar in the form
of a buzz cut. Cutting
his hair down to below
a quarter of an inch,
this low maintenance
hairstyle showed off
his strong features and
now heralded the birth
of David as sexy rather
than cute! He also
matched the hairdo with
stubble on his chin and
managed to pull off
wearing diamond studs
in his ears.
2002: The following
year, David let his hair
on the sides and back grow out (after testing the
boundaries with a full on Mohawk), while leaving the
middle in place. He furthered the style into a faux
hawk with the centre stripe dyed blonde and the rest
of the hair left naturally brown. Later that same year,
he had his hair cut to a uniform length and styled in
spikes with impressive blonde highlights.
2003: In June that year, David must have decided
that he missed his long blonde hair and decided to
grow it and rather long! Creating another style
for himself, he pulled the top back into a knot while
adding another short ponytail below the knot. Apart
from this clever do keeping the mane out of his face
during his game, he showed the world that men could
sport ponytails and look damn good in them too!
2005: Again in 2005, the football star grew back
the long hair to a medium length, but this time
he swapped the ponytail for a tousled and rough
appearance accompanied by a middle parting.
Naturally an accessory was needed to keep his hair at
bay while on the nelo, ano so he opteo lor the Alice
band. By this time, even the men in the world were
left in awe of him and his swagger! Thanks to Becks,
the day arrived when it was genuinely cool for the
metrosexual man to sport ponytails and headbands
sans the mocking.
2007: By now its abundantly evident that David
cares about his appearance maybe as much as
he cares for football! Deciding to test the theory
that blondes have more fun, the hunk dyed his hair
platinum blonde. The verdict? He still looked hotter
than ever and yes, he did appear to have a lot of
fun!
2009: If there was one look of David that didnt
leave crowds swooning, it would have been for that
short time in 2009 when he reinstated the Mohawk
but this time with the sides shaved. With the top
predominantly blonde with darker roots, the style was
not all that great. If it were anyone else, the fashion
police would have lashed out mercilessly, but after all,
this is THE David Beckham were talking about!
2010: David selected a more mature, stylish look.
Ditching the Mohawks and blonde hair, the slightly
long, rulneo hair with the sioe parting ano meoium
length spikes looked more sophisticated and framed
his gorgeous face well. The beard was a smart move
to add to the ruggedness and masculinity.
2012: Last year, David looked absolutely dapper
at the opening ceremony of the Olympics, with the
torch burning nrmly in hano. A piece ol man canoy
through and through, his not-a-hair-out-of-place
coiffed mane, parted to the side, with a moustache
and stubble made him look more like a runway
model than a footballer!
2013: Just when we thought David couldnt look
any better he proved us wrong. Again. Altering last
years look just a little, Becks has more or less stuck
to the coiffed hair this year, with the arched eyebrow,
cheeky smile and muscled physique to match! His
evolution to an Adonis has been a treat to his fans,
ano whether it`s been his perlormance on the nelo,
modelling in racy underwear campaigns or simply
being a loving husband and doting dad to his kids,
David stands as an immortal in a sea of men.

M

College auditorium
throbbed with a vivaciousness
you would only come across at
a rock concert. The aisles were
loaded with press photographers,
videographers, and the audience
was clearly happy to squat, stand,
sit... till the rockstar came. And
this was no aam janta. This was
the citys primarily Gujarati
and Maharastrian business
community, empowered and
informed members of The Indian
Merchants Chamber (IMC)
and All India Business Council
(AIBC) with a sprinkling of
some Japanese and Caucasian
businessmen all waiting in
unison, for possibly the one man
in Indian politics whose campaign
resembles US President Obamas
erstwhile war cry for change. Modi
apologised for being late having
just nown into the city. He openeo
his speech by noting that the
Indian citizen is protesting against
mediocre governance everywhere
from Jantar Mantar in Delhi to
Facebook globally. And justly so.
Indias potential is no different
from Gujarats potential. Modi ran
through a gamut of evolutionary
achievements where families had
no light to see what they ate for
dinner, and kids studied for exams
by candlelight, today there are no
power cuts. Where there was desert
land, you now have lush cash crop
nelos with orip irrigation. Where
girl childrens literacy rates were
appalling the rate was merely
57.8 per cent in 2001 you now
have a 12.93 per cent hike owing to
programmes like Kanya Kelavani
Abhiyaan and Shala Pravesh
Mahotsav, introduced by Modi
in 2001. (Each June, the Chief
Minister and his cabinet ministers
and workers still go across to the
remotest of villages, braving the
Gujarati summer temperatures
of 45 degree celsius to encourage
families to enroll their daughters.)
By this drive, a total of 234,302
girls have been enrolled in school
this year and 74,466 girls have
been given Narmada bonds worth
Rs148,932,000! Where there were
no tourists, you now have an online
queue waiting to see the Gujarats
more exotic monuments and relics,
thanks in part to the national award-
winning Gujarat Tourism campaign
featuring the gracious Amitabh
Bachchan. The increase in tourism
has made it possible to revive and
encourage a host of artisans and
craftspeople to create, sell, survive
and thrive. As we heard Modi
speak, about getting bullet trains
going, showing the Chinese and
ourselves that we are good at getting
our own house in order... I slowly,
very slowly started easing up on my
prejudices against Modi, harboured
ever since the Godhra bloodbath.
Yes the man has blood on his hands;
human rights cases against him. He
is not permitted to enter the United
States. But US policy is very nexible
and if a Mussharraf can be invited,
who knows? Businessmen nung
their issues at the man someone
protested LBT, another said how
do you propose to implement
change at the centre.. India is a
far more greater challenge than
administering one state. To which
Modi shared how he had proposed
infrastructure changes that would
have long benenteo Maharastra, but
they were stuck. He rueo the poor
coordination between participants
in the central government body
and how little knowledge each
olncial hao ol another`s work.
Secondly, he did concede that
having 10 years of non-stop power
was essential to implementing
ideas. Modis tapping into the
abundant solar energy to help
power Gujarat... providing
farmers with superior nutrients
and educating them on how to
use such technologies no change
would be sustainable unless
the application was consistent.
(Gujarat happens to be the only
state in India where agriculture has
grown by 10 per cent consistently
for 10 years. In 2014 Gujarat
will host a global agriculture
technology exhibition to showcase
the states achievements.) The
state has allocated 18,000 crores
to help forest-tribal communities,
and another 11,000 crores to uplift
coastal communities.
As for India on the whole...
with elections every nve years
and new coalition governments,
where are we? According to
Modi, none of his pleas for
reform have found any reaction
at the Centre. His sign oll... The
entire world knows that Asia
will be the next big story in this
century. The question is will it be
driven by India or China. If we
have to compete with China, we
have to develop skills in various
sectors, plan projects on a large
scale and achieve speed in their
implementation. Feople nleo
out from the hall, feeling more
optimistic. Maybe Mr Modi
can be that lever to destabilise
a dynasty and restabilise the
economy. Maybe...just maybe.

SKIN ESSENTIALS
HELLO! JUNE 2013 100
Summer making your skin a shade darker? Dodge the sun and soak your skin in some
high-protection sunscreen. HELLO! exposes the best multi-tasking little geniuses out there
Get summer ready
C
ome summer and your skin
needs some major rescuing! Not
only from the perilous rays of the
sun, but also from the high levels
of heat and humidity. Skin expert
and dermatologist Dr Rekha Sheth
elaborates: During the summer,
tho hont intonsiBos tho bnd oIIocts
of the UV rays. Hence it is extremely
important to use sun protection.
There are two major types of UV rays
UVA and UVB. The UVB penetrate
suporBcinlly nnd nro rosponsiblo Ior
sunburn. In Caucasian (white) skins,
they are also responsible for being the
main causative rays of skin cancer.
The UVA rays are more relevant for
us Indians they penetrate deeper,
and are responsible for tanning,
darkening, pigmentation and also
for ageing of the skin. However the
UVB enhances the effects of UVA
especially the tanning effect in Indian
skin. Hence I would recommend
using a sunscreen with a high SPF
30 or more. The sunscreen should
also have UVA protection. It is always
better to use a stand-alone sunscreen,
even though your make-up may have
some sunscreen effect. The sunscreen
should be used everyday even if you
are indoors as the UVA comes in
through the windows as well. Most
good sunscreens will feel icky or
sticky but they are non-comedogenic
so do not cause breakouts.

esides your routine skincare regime,
its imperative to follow a healthy
diet to keep your skin radiant and
glowing. Dr Minal Patwardhan, Dubais
top dermatologist, tells us more about
the importance of knowing what you
eat. She says: To combat the effects of
the sun internally, foods which help are
those with a high water content and rich
in Vitamin C and antioxidants. Fruits
like watermelon, melons, strawberries,
oranges, kiwi and of course berries like
blueberry, raspberry and cranberry are a
rich source of these antioxidants. Apples
and bananas are staple, affordable and
complete meals, which teamed with
yoghurt is an unbeatable combo for
the skin and the body.
Carrots, mangoes and papaya
are rich in carotenes, which are an
integral content of our skin and
reinforce the natural defenses of
skin against UV light.
Green leafy vegetables,
coriander and parsley all
contribute to glowing and
healthy skin by replenishing
folic acid and Vitamin E.
Combine these with nuts and
avocados, which supply skin-
healthy fats, Vitamin E and
essential amino acids.
For the non-vegetarians,
lots ol nsh, egg white ano
white meat is preferred
during the summer, so as to
replenish essential amino
acids commonly termed
Omega 3 and 6 and also to
keep the acid levels well in
control thus keeping the
body cool as these are not
heaty foods.

GEMINI: People from your past are coming back into your life, but
its advisable that you do not compromise on anything. SCORPIO:
Use your intuition to make the right decisions
For many of you, life is starting to look
different. New people are entering your
life and you are full of ideas. Those
working on a new business venture
should remain cordial with colleagues,
which could be the key for future success.
Right now, you need peace in your
relationship. Someone you care for keeps
changing his/her behaviour towards you
making it very oilncult lor you to leel
secure. You will prefer to hold on to
the one youve known for many years,
rather than taking a risk and giving a
commitment to someone new.
Positive news related to money will cheer
you up. You are looking for new ideas
to improve your nnancial situation ano
can expect good results. Work will be
very demanding. Moving to a new house
recently was lucky for you and it will
eventually reduce tension in the family.
Those who rejected you in the past will
suddenly contact you again. You need
love and it is just a matter of time till you
nno yoursell getting involveo again. Do
not waste your time on someone who is
too afraid to give you a commitment.
Taurus 21 APR - 21 MAY
The period before your birthday is a
sensitive time for your health and you
need to avoid exerting yourself. Travel
will inspire you. Jupiter enters your
second house of money and property;
making it the ideal time to expand your
business. Most of your work problems
will get solved by the end of this year.
In your personal life, this is a time for
self-realisation. People from your past
are coming back into your life, but its
advisable that you do not compromise
on anything, as what happened in the
past may happen again in the future.
Gemini 22 MAY - 22 JUN
Jupiter is entering your sign bringing
positive results. It is time to get over
your fears as the universe has new
plans for you. There will be new career
opportunities and it will be wise to look
at them with an open mind. Working
with highly innuential people will be
the beginning of a new chapter in your
professional life. This is not a good year
for your health; orthopedic problems
and hormonal disorders may crop up.
In your personal life, you feel suffocated
and there is a growing need to be free.
Do not holo on to someone who cannot
give you an emotional commitment.
Cancer 23 JUN - 23 JUL
Monetary matters will keep you busy. You
are looking for new ways to secure your
nnancial luture ano the right way is to
welcome the changes that life is offering
you. If you need to sign any contracts or
commit nnancially to someone then oo
it before June 26 when Mercury starts
going retro. This is a very tense month
lor relationships. Do not get aggressive
and be open to listening to your partner.
If you recently got married or gave a
commitment, try and be patient as it will
take time till both ol you can nno the
perfect balance for a stable relationship.
Your new plans are slowly taking shape.
Travelling will be successful and the
new social environment will keep your
spirits up. Cards predict positive career
changes. A new work project will be
the beginning of a new career chapter.
Letting go of a relationship that has
ended, will allow a new person to enter
your life. Being far from your spouse is
not good for you this year; you must do
the best you can to support each other.
If you are involved with a married
person, reduce your expectations as that
will never leao to a nnal commitment.
Leo 24 JUL - 23 AUG Sagittarius 23 NOV - 21 DEC
This is a period of professional progress
that offers you a chance to improve your
nnancial situation. You are brimming
with new ideas. If you are in the middle
of a new business transaction, use
professionals to guide you through the
process and complete the transaction
before Mercury starts going retro on June
26. Many of you recently got involved in
a new relationship, which may end up in
marriage. You will require a lot of love
and patience to deal with a partner who
has a strong personality.
Your career ano nnancial situation will
be your main concerns right now. You
are looking for new ways to increase
your income. Be patient during business
negotiations. In the last week of this
month, Mercury will start going retro,
during which you are prone to make
mistakes. Financially it is not the right
time to trust others. It is important that
you manage your budget carefully. One
ol your kios is going through a oilncult
time and you will have to support him/
her at this time.
Virgo 24 AUG - 23 SEP Capricorn 22 DEC - 20 JAN
This is going to be a hectic work period
and you must keep a healthy lifestyle.
Your career is on a positive path this year.
This is a good period for artists and those
in media. A new career opportunity will
lead you to success. If you need to sign a
contract then make sure you dont give
any long-term commitments as your
horoscope shows better opportunities
in the coming future. Your charming
personality is attracting the opposite sex.
A stable marriage will depend on both
of you being faithful to each other and
keeping your friendship alive.
Financial matters are keeping you busy
right now; work projects and property
transactions will suffer unexpected
delays. Increasing responsibilities at
work will disturb your personal life.
Mercury will be in retro from the last
week of June till mid-July; so it is not
a suitable time to start something new
after June 26. Work and business
partnerships might go through
a oilncult time. Relationships
will be sensitive; you may get
hurt very quickly. Avoid overreacting or
saying things that you might regret later.
Libra 24 SEP - 23 OCT Aquarius 21 JAN - 19 FEB
Work problems are sorting themselves
out, making you feel optimistic about
the future. Financially you are over-
motivated to achieve success and it can
lead to taking unnecessary risks. Use your
intuition to make the right decisions.
Mercury will start going retro at the end
of the month; so if you are about to sign
a contract or close a property transaction
do it before that. Family tension will
disturb your peace of mind, but this is a
temporary situation. This is a good time
to settle down with the one you love. If
you are already married, share some
more time with your spouse right now.
After some stressful weeks you are
starting to feel better and are all set
to face the new challenges that life
throws at you now. You must decide
and act quickly about an exciting
new work offer that may come your
way. It is not a suitable time to start
a new project or sign any long-term
contract, as Mercury starts going retro
from the last week of June till mid-July.
Loyalty will be the key to your peace
of mind in your current relationship.
Open and honest communication
with your partner will help clear
any misunderstandings.

DRINK WITH
HELLO! JUNE 2013 134
Danny
DeVito
The irrepressible
star of classic
sitcom Taxi tells
HELLO! why he
has no plans to
call a halt to his
Hollywood ride
D
eVito announces, Im jet-lagged, man!
But youd never know it. The little guy
with the big voice is full of energy, politely
asking the waiter to take away his martini and
replace it with neat gin. Lets get drunk! he
grins. Having been in the business for four
decades, 68-year-old Danny is old-school
Hollywood a larger-than-life character
with charisma to spare. He made his name as
grouchy cab company dispatcher Louie De
Palma on hit sitcom Taxi, then graduated to
blockbuster movies, starring in Romancing the
Stone and The War of the Roses (which he also
directed) and producing acclaimed dramas
Pulp Fiction and Erin Brockovich. Hes now back
on US TV in the comedy Its Always Sunny
in Philadelphia. Hit 1996 movie Matilda was
one of several collaborations with his wife
Rhea Perlman, 64, whom he met in the early
1970s and married in 1982. They have three
grown-up children and appeared to be one
of Hollywoods most stable couples until
they separated last year. Happily Danny and
the former Cheers star are now reconciled.
Things are good between us, he says. Well
drink to that
Taxi is being shown again on
TV and you dont seem to have
aged at all. Whats your secret?
I look at old clips and think: what the hell
happened to you? so Im not sure Ive not
aged, but I do qigong, which is the practice of
aligning breath, movement and awareness.
And how do you stay grounded?
When people ask me that I always give the
lightbulb joke: how many actors does it take
to change a light bulb? Just one he holds
onto the bulb and the world revolves around
him. Seriously though, just being a human
being keeps me grounded.
Was a career in TV always part of
your master plan?
Not at all. It was a happy accident. The
Casting Director put me up for the part of
Louie on Taxi and most of my friends told
me that I shouldnt do it. They were snobs
about television. Jack Nicholson, for instance,
who Id become friends with when we did
One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, said: D, are
you really going to do TV? Imagine if Id
listened to him. You wouldnt be talking to
me now, baby.
Rhea played Louies girlfriend
Zena on the show. How was it
working together?
That was fun and it made it easier when it
came to sharing a car.
Taxi rnn Ior Bvo yonrs. Wns it nll work
and no play on the sitcom?
Hell no. Wed work from Monday to
Thursday getting the episode together, then
after the recording in front of a live studio
audience on the Friday wed get mad crazy
through until Sunday, then take the day
to recover. Imagine nve years ol that. We
werent drinking much, but there were drugs.
Lets just say the Kleenex bill was high.
What were your vices back then?
Not one particular thing. In other words not
booze or drugs or women, fancy cars, great
vacations Not one particular one I like
them all. But these days I like to eat well, I
like to drink and I like to work. Those are my
pleasures in life along with my kids, my wife,
my family and friends.
You diroct horror Blns Ior tho
Internet, which might surprise
people. What scares you in real life?
What scares me is the government
politicians are so smarmy, they say all kinds
of things then reverse their viewpoints and
how inhuman people can be towards each
other. What people might be interested to
learn about me is that Im a brain surgeon.
(laughs) Thats not true, but Im actually a
qualineo hairoresser ano make-up artist. Il I
hadnt made it as an actor Id probably now
be doing my 16
th
shampoo and set of the day
at my sisters salon.
Do you think you will ever retire from
the business?
No way, man. I mean, what would I do with
myself all day? But there have been times
when I thought Id never work again. After
Taxi I did Terms of Endearment, then soon after
that came Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the
Nile, and my career was unusual because
at the time only three people broke out of
television into movies Clint Eastwood,
John Travolta and myself. But actors never
know when theyre ever going to work again
and they always think theyre never going to
work again. Also, you want to nno the gooo
stuff to do. Some stuff you get offered and
you do it but you shouldnt have, but usually
theres someone involved like a friend who
wants you for the job and I have a tough time
turning that stuff down.
