Victoria Schwager Reflection on Assignment 3 This weeks reflection had me one again anxious because of all the reading

we had to do. But again, I took it and I felt as if it was a good set of articles since Human Behavior interests me. From the first three articles we note that this reflections topic is going to be about Human Behavior and Social Environment (HBSE). In the first article, Does HBSE Teach Students to Do Anything, we can see that the obvious question for the article is how does HBSE teach students that are in the bachelors or masters social work programs. What does it teach them to do? Well, that may be a tricky question to answer but here goes my best shot. Human Behavior and Social Environment does and does not teach students to DO something. I think that HBSE teaches us skills that are important for us to use later. By this I mean that HBSE may not physically teach us to do something but the skill we learn from HBSE help us evaluate and then apply these skills. HBSE is primarily used in assessment process. It also allows us to know key risk factors and where to find them so we may know them when working with a client. Finally, from this article we learned that theories are important for HBSE because they help with providing approaches for performing assessments. In the second article, Should HBSE Favor Social Environment Theories over Theories of Individual Behavior; we see that the major topic is all about theories. From my understanding the article is trying to find out if we should place more emphasis on Social Environment Theories over Theories of Individual Behavior. Meaning should there be more focus on the SE than the HB? The article is stating that there is more of a focus right now on the HB over the SE and they

are trying to figure out if this is what should be going on. I feel as if the HB and SE part of Human Behavior and Social Environment should be focused on equally. I feel as if they are both just as important. In the third and final article, Can HBSE Classes Discuss Socially Sensitive Topics without Being Labeled Politically Incorrect?, we see that the article is simply wanting to know what we can discuss and what we cant. I would have to say after reading the article I feel as if we should be able to have critical discussion on racial issues or gender issues without being labeled as a sexists or a racist and that we are politically incorrect. As we have learned throughout the semester from Dr. Bowers is that the classroom is place for open conversation and that nothing is to be taken offensively. I feel as if that should apply to this as well. As student or as social workers we should be allowed to critically think about a topic and be able to discuss it with our peers. In conclusion, I feel as if this weeks articles related to Human Behavior and Social Environment was extremely helpful. It allowed us to open our minds to questions about the topic we havent noticed before.
