STUDENT BLUFF Season 2

The report was presented by doing a game show in class. The name of the show was Student Bluff Season 2. The name and game play was derived from a national game show entitle Celebrity Bluff from GMA 7. The game involves three (3) rounds, namely: Round 1: Fact or Bluff Round 2: Scrambled Letter or Words Round 3: Final Destination The instructions and questions were used in the presentation. Round 1: Fact or Bluff Instructions: In round one called Fact or Bluff, 2 groups of players individually answer questions. The student gangnams JOSEL (Jecel) and WALLAINE (Lalaine) will give the players a statement. The players will have to decide whether their chosen student gangnams statement is a fact or a bluff. Categories Lets Go Social According to History Scientific Community Category 1: Lets GO Social 1. Technology is the direct application of science, It DOES imply political /social values. Bluff. Technology is the direct application of science, It DOES NOT imply any political or social values. What made it biased is the motive of the people in applying a particular technology and the end to which it is used.

2. Scientists DO NOT hold responsibility either for the harmful effects of the products of science or to what use such products are being imposed. Fact. Such judgments are being made by SOCIETY as a whole and scientists do not play an important role in these decisions. 3. The process of technological change is very much linked to innovation. Fact. A lot of things are invented but it is only through innovation that technology has evolved and changed the society. Category 2: According to History The neutrality (state of being neutral) of science was shaken by the outbreak of WORLD WAR II. Bluff. They aim to forestall the entry of fascism , which poses a threat to the freedom of inquiry and to the survival of science. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY also played an important role in military and non-military aspects during WW II. Fact. Since the early stages of the war, scientists made a vital contributions from the invention of radar to the creation of atomic bomb, code name Manhattan project. Since the early stages of the war, scientists made a vital contributions from the invention of radar to the creation of atomic bomb, code name Manhattan project. Fact. It was taken as a maxim by leading politicians that a nations pow er to prosper in peace, survived in war, and command the respect of its neighbors depend largely on its degree of scientific and technological advancement.

Category 3: Scientific Community 1. According to Lakatos, a theory can be rejected even when there is no rival theory to replace it as long as the evidence that the theory is rejectable beyond reasonable doubt.. Bluff. According to Imre Lakatos, a theory is REJECTED ONLY when there is a rival theory to replace it. He introduced a new criterion for judging the superiority of a theory. It must provide a progressive problem shift that is, it must not only resolve problems but extend the problem horizon. 2. TECHNOLOGICAL DETERMINISM belief that technology causes HARM TO the society Bluff. TECHNOLOGICAL DETERMINISM belief that technology causes Changes the society - Technological advancement determines social and cultural changes 3. In the Scientific community, participants are free to choose and pursue research topics that they are interested on. Bluff. In the Scientific community, participants are expected, indeed are constrained to pursue research topics on the basis of their scientific significance. Round 2: Scrambled letters or words Instructions: In round two called Scrambled letters or words, 2 groups of players individually answer questions provided with scrambled words in 5 seconds. Each correct answer will be given 2 points otherwise 1 point will be given to the other group. Categories Science Community Science and Technology Beautiful Minds

Category 1: Science Community 1. INNVOATOIN - an idea, practice, or object that is perceived as new to an individual or another unit of adoption. Ans. INNOVATION 2. SEENIDPITYR -Accidental discovery of a new idea; e. g. the invention of Post-its, Rogaine (a hair-restorer for balding) Ans. SERENDIPITY 3. PTANET-Acquiring of which is a measure of success of research; the government protects the rights of the inventor for a period of 17 years; introduced in order to provide capitalistic motivation for invention Ans. PATENT Category 2: Science and Technology 1. TEHCONYOLG-It is defined as know how or the sum of knowledge, skill, experience and expertise necessary for the planning, establishment, and operation of new manufacturing plant and associated enterprises. Ans. TECHNOLOGY 2. TEGCHOLYNO TARNFSER-is an adaptation of the original that has been modified to fit the second regions particular social, political, technological, climatological, economic and educational environment. Ans. TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER 3. ISNURTENMT-It is the decisive connection which links science with technology Ans. INSTRUMENT Category 3: Beautiful Minds 1. CRACYTECHNO-Those who possess knowledge also possess power. as this knowledge becomes the source of power. This is known as the concept of

Ans. TECHNOCRACY 2. SALAKOT-his methodology of scientific research program elaborated a sophisticated falsificationism, within which scientists live with anomalies - that falsity established theories. Ans. LAKATOS According to Lakatos Theory, a theory is rejected only when there is a rival theory to replace it. He introduced a new criterion for judging the superiority of a theory. It must provide a progressive problem shift that is, it must not only resolve problems but extend th e problem horizon. 3. PPOPRE-The theory of the progress of knowledge. theories are attempts to produce solutions to a problem. Who formulated this theory? Ans. POPPER POPPERS Theory of Progressive Knowledge- The conditions of survival are set by the objective problem, and in Poppers perspective, the fittest theory for survival is not a theory which answers some purpose, but the theory which is nearest to the truth. Round 3: Final Destination Instructions: In round three called Final Destination, the remaining group will answer one question provided with choices. They will be given 30 seconds to answer. The bluffers will give their suggested answers to the question but it is completely up to the contestant whether to accept or ignore them. If they provided all the answers it is worth 2+ points in the quiz otherwise it will be divided. Categories Final 5 Final 4 Final 3

Final 5 Political Characteristics of Science and Technology: Science and Technology possess certain characteristics that would bring change to politics for the better good. Name those five (5). Choices: CONCERN PROBLEMS BELIEF THAT ALL PROBLEMS CAN BE SOLVED BELIEF THAT SCIENCE IS SUPERIOR OVER GOVERNMENT USE OF SCIENTIFIC METHOD HIGH DESIRE FOR OBJECTIVITY AND SIMPLE RATIONALITY FEAR TO COMPROMISE Ans. CONCERN PROBLEMS BELIEF THAT ALL PROBLEMS CAN BE SOLVED USE OF SCIENTIFIC METHOD HIGH DESIRE FOR OBJECTIVITY AND SIMPLE RATIONALITY FEAR TO COMPROMISE It has been suggested that the entry of scientists and technologists into the political arena would change the character of politics for the better, because they possess certain characteristics, namely: 1. develop certain habits of mind which give them a keen concern with facts, objectivity and logical approach to problem solving; 2. apt to believe that all problems have solutions; 3. likely to approach all questions with a concern for rigorous definition , for the acquisition of relevant information and for the development of a course of action or of alternatives because of their training in the scientific method; 4. may turn impatient because of the high desire for objectivity and simple rationality; 5. reluctant to compromise. Final 4 Areas of Impact of Science and Technology. Give the four areas where Science and Technology has impact on. Choices: ENVIRONMENT INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES RELIGION DEMOCRACY WORKPLACE EDUCATION Ans. ENVIRONMENT INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES DEMOCRACY WORKPLACE

Areas of Impact of Science and Technology the environment a. Threatens the natural course of environment b. Technological advancement that threatens the environment c. Decision making on in governmental committees, conference and legislation Workplace 1. Direct impact- unemployment 2. Indirect impact- boredom due to assembly line work On the individual rights and civil liberties Due to technology (internet in particular), issues of abuse of privacy and potential social control arises. Democracy use of sophisticated decision-making techniques tends to undermine democratic principles

Final 3 KUHNS THEORY of normal and revolutionary science: In the development of particular science, Kuhn distinguishes three stages as: Choices: PRE-PARADIGM STAGE STAGE OF REVOLUTIONARY SCIENCE PRESENTATION OF THEORY TO THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY PARADIGM STAGE OF NORMAL SCIENCE FORMULATION OF THEORY Ans: PRE-PARADIGM STAGE PARADIGM STAGE OF NORMAL SCIENCE STAGE OF REVOLUTIONARY SCIENCE KUHNS THEORY OF NORMAL AND REVOLUTIONARY SCIENCE. In the development of particular science, Kuhn distinguishes three stages as: 1. Pre-paradigm stage science developed based on the shifts in paradigm. The validity of a theory is subject to social phenomenon. 2. Paradigm stage of normal science based on the presumption that science developed from an accumulation of serendipitous truths, which are abundant and natural 3. Stage of revolutionary science based on the external influences of society in the development of science and technology.
