CCI Approved Jet-Etihad Deal Worth Rs. 2058 Crore

Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved the proposed acquisition of 24 percent stake in the Naresh Goyalled Indian carrier by Abu Dhabi based airline. This decision will allow the closure of the long pending Jet-Etihad deal. Etihad is acquiring the stake for Rs. 2058 crore in a deal that was announced in April 2013. This will become the first-ever Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in an Indian carrier by an overseas airline. The deal has already been cleared by capital markets regulator SEBI, Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) and Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA). Government Introduced Risk Management System (RMS) for Trade Facilitation in Export Sector Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram inaugurated the IT based Risk Management System (RMS) for the customs clearance of export goods at New Delhi. Government has introduced RMS to enhance trade facilitation in the export sector and to check smuggling of drugs, weapons and other illegal substances harmful to the country. RMS will also enable the Excise and Customs Department to enhance the level of facilitation and speed up the process of cargo clearance. The single window system of RMS will contribute to reduce in dwell time, by achieving the desired objective of reducing the transaction cost in order to make the business internationally competitive. The launch of RMS in exports covers 11 Customs stations at Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune and Tutocorin. It would be extended to all EDI Customs stations by year end.

RAF Academy of Public Order Inaugurated in Meerut Ministry of Home Affairs inaugurated RAF Academy of Public Order in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. This academy will train personnels of Rapid Action Force along with selected members of other paramilitary forces and civil police. Public administration, riot control, crowd management, disaster management, human rights, media management and first aid to the victims are some of the core issues on which focussed training will be provided to troupes. The security persons moving on to peace missions under the United Nations will also be provided necessary training in the Academy. Finance Ministry Released Commemorative Coins on Birth Anniversary of Abul Kalam Azad The Union Finance Minister P.Chidambaram released a commemorative coin of Rs. 20 a circulation coin of Rs. 5 to mark the culmination of the 125th Birth Anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. The year 2013 marked the culmination of the 125th Birth Anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Maulana Azad was one of Indias most prominent freedom fighters, who espoused the cause of an undivided India. He was the first Minister of Education of India and was also awarded the countrys highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna in 1992.

Krishna Mohan Sahni Appointed as Chairman of the National Multi Commodity Exchange of India Retired bureaucrat Krishna Mohan Sahni was appointed as Chairman of the National Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd. His appointment was approved by the Forward Markets Commission, the commission which is responsible for regulating the commodities markets in India. In the meanwhile, two former Gujarat Chief Secretaries, Pravin K. Laheri and Sudhir G. Mankad joined as independent directors on the NMCE board. National Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd. (NMCE) is the first demutualised commodity exchange of India, which was granted permanent recognition by the Union Government of India in 1990s. NMCE started with the futures trading in 24 commodities in November 2002.

Usha Ananthasubramanian Appointed as CMD of Bharatiya Mahila Bank The Union Government appointed Usha Ananthasubramanian as the Chairperson and Managing Director of public sector Bharatiya Mahila Bank, the first womens bank. Before joining BMB, she was an Executive Director with Punjab National Bank (PNB). Usha Ananthasubramanian started her career in the actuarial department with LIC and banking career in February 1982 with Bank of Baroda. She holds a masters degree in statistics from the University of Madras and a masters degree in ancient Indian culture from University of Mumbai. During her tenure at Punjab National Bank, she was part of the panel formed examining the blueprint and other issues for setting up the womens bank. The panels report paved the way for Indias first public sector womens bank.

Yogesh Agarwal, the Chairman of PFRDA Resigned; Anup Wadhawan Took Over The Chairman of Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), Yogesh Agarwal resigned from the post of Chairman. He resigned because of the Governments decision to not allow him to be a part of the selection panel for members of the regulator. In the meanwhile, Joint Secretary Anup Wadhawan was appointed as the new Chairman of PFRDA by the Finance Ministry. It is important to note that Yogesh Agarwal had one and half years more as his tenure of the Chairman. Shiraz Naval Minwalla Won New Horizons in Physics Prize 2014 Shiraz Naval Minwalla, professor of Physics in TIFR, Mumbai selected for the 2014 New Horizons in Physics Prize. He was awarded "for his pioneering contributions to the study of string theory and quantum field theory; and in particular his work on the connection between the equations of fluid dynamics and Albert Einsteins equations of general relativity". The New Horizons for Physics Prize is awarded to promising junior researchers by Fundamental Physics Prize Foundation. The award carries prize money of 100000 US dollars. The other laureates of the 2014 New Horizons in Physics Prize are Freddy Cachazo and Vyacheslav Rychkov.

The Fundamental Physics Prize Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation established by the Milner Foundation, Russia in 2012 and dedicated to advancing our knowledge of the Universe at the deepest level by awarding annual prizes for scientific breakthroughs, as well as communicating the excitement of fundamental physics to the public. The Fundamental Physics Prize recognises transformative advances in the field, while the New Horizons in Physics Prizes are targeted at promising junior researchers.

Law Ministry said that Amendment of Article 371D is needed for the Bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh The Union Law Ministry told to the Group of Ministers (GoM) about the necessity of amendment of Article 371D of the Constitution of India for the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. Article 371D of the Indian Constitution writes special provisions with respect to the state of Andhra Pradesh. Two-thirds majority of the Parliament will be needed for the passage of the Constitution Amendment Bill, which will be the biggest political inference in the passage. The GoM will seek the advice of Goolam Vahanvati, the Attorney General before they proceed with the Bill. As they want to enquire that is a single Bill sufficient on bifurcation or a separate Bill will be required to be amendment.

Professor C. N. R. Rao and Sachin Tendulkar Selected for Bharat Ratna Award The Government of India decided to confer, the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award on eminent scientist professor C. N. R. Rao and cricket player Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin Tendulkar is the first sports person to win the Bharat Ratna Award. The Bharat Ratna award so far, given only to eminent personalities from the field of dance, music, art, literature and the social sector. In the year 2011, the Government of India modified the eligibility criteria for the Bharat Ratna Award - to enable eminent sports persons to receive the Nations highest civilian award. Professor Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao is an eminent scientist and a well recognised international authority on solid state and materials chemistry. He has published over 1400 research papers and 45 books. Prof. C. N. R. Rao's contributions have been recognised by most major scientific academies around the world through conferment of memberships and fellowships. He has been honoured with several national and international awards, including the Padma Vibhushan. Prof. CNR Rao is Honorary President of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, India. Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is an Indian batsman, who is considered one of the greatest batsmen of the cricket world. Sachin Tendulkar made his Test debut against arch-rival Pakistan at Karachi in 1989. He made his ODI debut against Pakistan in 1989 in Gujranwala. He currently holds the record for most hundreds in both Tests and One Day Internationals.
