The MVCA is happy to have worked with veterans sponsored hunts working with the Des Moines County Conservation and very proud to have sponsored the building of a Handicapped Accessible Hunting Blind at the Cairo Woods Wildlife Area. The building of this blind was coordinated by the Louisa County Conservation Board and is now complete and available to those in need. Also another Handicapped Accessible Hunting Blind is planned to be built by the National Wild Turkey Federation at Lake Geode with funds donated by the MVCA. An event such as this could never be accomplished without the financial and in-kind support of many generous individuals and organizations. We would like to thank everyone who has helped make this event a special and successful function especially those who have volunteered today.

Ten year old Garrett Brockway was a fun, caring and giving boy who brought joy to those around him. He was known by his classmates as someone who would stand up for others, who would make sure the younger children were included in games and would strive to do his best. He was also an active boy who loved the outdoors. On a snowy day in February 2013, Garrett was struck by a falling tree while helping his father on their property. Three days later, he died from the injuries he suffered but his caring soul continued to give. Garrett's parents, Bruce and Tiffini, chose organ donation so that the gifts God had given Garrett could now be given to others who were in need. Feeling great despair with the loss of their son, Garrett's parents felt that organ donation was just another way Garrett could help others and bring much needed hope to families who were also in despair. Soon after Garrett's death, his family began receiving news of the huge impact his gifts were having on the lives of the recipients. His gifts helped restore site to a 10 year old girl and 63 year old grandmother through cornea transplants. His heart was able to bring much needed hope to a 14 year old boy. His kidneys went to a 28 year old student and a 65 year old man who was a perfect match. His liver went to a 14 year old boy and his pancreas to a 43 year old wife and mother. Through tissue donation, Garrett was able to help a 14 year old boy who suffered chronic knee pain, a 54 year old grandfather, and a female police officer who was injured in the line of duty. In his ten short years, Garrett took on many roles including son, grandson, big brother, cousin, Christian and friend. But most importantly, he took on the role of hero when he became an organ donor and a giver of life. Garrett's parents have started the Garrett M. Brockway Foundation to help promote awareness of organ donation and enhance the lives of local children through academic and athletic programs. To learn more about the Foundation or to register as an organ donor, please visit garrettspath.org.
