Design Justification
In the briefing, the client stated that she liked the logotypes used for the California Department of Public Health, Wisconsins Head Start Association, and Boulder County Public Health. All of the logos which the client selected as examples were bright, with high saturation, and vivid contrast. I tried to mirror this look by utilizing red and blue hues with varied saturation. The client also expressed the desire to keep the outline of Michigan in the logo, so I made sure to display the silhouette in each design variation. Because the Michigan Public Health Training Center (MPHTC) is involved in training, and apples are both associated with teachers and Michigan, I included this image in each of my designs. I wanted a slab serif typeface for the logotype which was simple and clean, but formal enough to remind viewers of the serif typefaces traditionally used in academic texts to mirror the educational nature of the MPHTC. The typeface Rockwell fulfilled this requirement and I used it in both versions of the design. I provided both a logo with the full name of the Michigan Public Health Training Center and its abbreviation to give the organization flexibility in branding itself in different environments. The fully expanded logo with the complete name may be used in outward facing arenas which are less familiar with the organization, while the abbreviated design may be more appropriate in local environments.
