TheYellowBittern(Ixobrychussinensis )isasmall bittern.ItisofOldWorldorigins,breedinginmuchof theIndianSubcontinent,easttoJapanandIndonesia.It ismainlyresident,butsomenorthernbirdsmigrate shortdistances.Ithasbeenrecordedasavagrantin AlaskaandthereisasinglerecordfromBritain,from RadipoleLake,DorsetonNovember23,1962 however,theBOUhavealwaysconsideredthis occurrencetobeofuncertainprovenanceandcurrently itisnotacceptedontotheofficialBritishList. Thisisasmallspeciesat36to38cm(14to15in)in length,withashortneckandlongishbill.Themaleis uniformlydullyellowaboveandbuffbelow.Thehead andneckarechestnut,withablackcrown. Thefemale'scrown,neckandbreastarestreaked brown,andthejuvenileislikethefemalebutheavily streakedbrownbelow,andmottledwithbuffabove. Theirbreedinghabitatisreedbeds.Theyneston platformsofreedsinshrubs.46eggsarelaid.They canbedifficulttosee,giventheirskulkinglifestyleand reedbedhabitat,buttendtoflyfairlyfrequently,when thestrikingcontrastbetweentheblackflightfeathers andtheotherwiseyellowishplumagemakesthem unmistakable.
