Report on Underground Coal Mining

Overview
Mahanadi Coalfields Limited is one of the eight subsidiaries of Coal India Limited. It was carved out of South Eastern Coalfields Limited in 1992 with its headquarters at Sambalpur. Coal mining trip for our batch was scheduled in Ib valley area headed by Mr. R.P.Gupta, General Manager. The Ib-valley area is bounded by latitudes 2131N and 2214N and longitudes 8332E and 8410E. The coalfield extends over an area of 1460 sq km and covers parts of Sambalpur, Jharsuguda and Sundargarh districts of Odisha. It has an undulating topography which is characteristic of the Formations of the Gondwana Super group. The coalfield is known as Ib-valley coalfield named after the river Ib, a tributary of the river Mahanadi. Ib Valley Coalfield has reserves of 22.3 billion tonnes, the third highest in India

Introduction
Orient area mine no.3 (underground coal mine )is located in the Ib valley area of Mahanadi coal field. This mine is located in Rampur village of Jharsuguda district of Odisha. Coal is extracted from three different seam of Lajkura seam. Mine is extended up to an area of 1130 hectare.
