New Syllabuses
Piano for Leisure, Singing and Viola
The 2011 Manual of Syllabuses sees the release of two
new syllabuses (Piano for Leisure and Singing) and the
evaluated version of the Viola syllabus that first
appeared in the 2007 Manual of Syllabuses. These will
be available for examination in all states from 2011.
Piano for Leisure
The Board is pleased to announce the launch of its
new Piano for Leisure syllabus, available for
examination from 2011. This syllabus has been
completely redesigned, with new and exciting
repertoire in the Manual Lists and a carefully
designed and appropriately sequenced regime of
technical work drawn from the technical work regime
of the recent Piano syllabus.
This syllabus will be examined concurrently with the
Piano for Leisure syllabus that appeared in the 2010
Manual of Syllabuses until an evaluation of the
operation of the new syllabus takes place. At the
conclusion of the evaluation, the Board will give one
years notice of its intention to withdraw the old
syllabus from examination.
The Board has published a comprehensive series of
publications to support the new syllabus, including
Grade Books to Seventh Grade (see PUBLICATIONS).
The following publications may be used with the
syllabus:
Piano for Leisure Series 3
(Preliminary to Seventh Grade)
Piano for Leisure Series 3 Recordings and Handbooks
(Preliminary to Seventh Grade)
Piano for Leisure Series 2
(Preliminary to Eighth Grade)
Piano for Leisure Series 2 Recordings and Handbooks
(Preliminary to Eighth Grade)
Piano for Leisure Series 1
(Preliminary to Eighth Grade)
Piano for Leisure Series 1 CDs with notes
(Preliminary to Eighth Grade)
Piano Technical work (2008)
Piano Sight-reading (2004)
Piano Technical work (2000 revised) may not be
used with this syllabus. This book may only be used
with the Piano for Leisure syllabus that appeared in
the 2010 Manual of Syllabuses.

Singing
The Board is pleased to announce the launch of its
new Singing syllabus, available for examination from
2011. The new syllabus differs in significant ways
from the old syllabus, featuring two new grades
(Preliminary and First Grade) as well as the Certificate
of Performance, a grade examination that acts as the
cap for Level 2 examinations. Technical work in this
syllabus is examined through accompanied vocalises.
The structure of Manual Lists allows a full exposure to
the historical literature of the voice, including songs
from music theatre and operetta that require a
classical technique. Candidates in Level 1 are also
required to present an unaccompanied song. The
sight-reading requirements for this syllabus have
been made more explicit and should give highly
focused guidance to candidates preparing for
examination with this syllabus.
This syllabus will be examined concurrently with the
Singing syllabus that appeared in the 2010 Manual of
Syllabuses until an evaluation of the operation of the
new syllabus takes place. At the conclusion of the
evaluation, the Board will give one years notice of its
intention to withdraw the old syllabus from
examination.
The Board has published a comprehensive series of
publications to support the new syllabus, including
Grade Books to Fourth Grade (see Publications). The
following volumes may be used with the syllabus:
Singing Series 2 (Preliminary to Fourth Grade) high
voice or medium/low voice. Technical work for
Level 1 is included in these volumes.
Singing Technical work (Level 2)
Singing Sight-reading (2010)
Singing Series 1 Grade Books may not be used with
this syllabus unless songs contained in the series
have been listed in the Manual Lists for the new
syllabus. Songs drawn from these books may be used
as Extra List works at teacher and candidate
discretion. Singing Technical work (revised edition
1998) may not be used with this syllabus. This book
may only be used with the syllabus that appeared in
the 2010 Manual of Syllabuses.
Singing: Sight singing for teachers and students
(2000) does not contain indicative examples of the
standard of sight-reading in this new syllabus.
Candidates and teachers may wish to use it
nonetheless to augment their sight-reading resources.
Viola
The Board is pleased to announce the launch of the
evaluated Viola syllabus, available for examination in
2011.
This syllabus will be examined concurrently with both
the version of the Viola syllabus that appeared in the
2010 Manual of Syllabuses (the form of the Viola
syllabus prior to the recently completed evaluation)
and the Viola syllabus that last appeared in the 2006
Manual of Syllabuses (the old syllabus). The Board
hereby gives one years notice of the withdrawal of
the version of the Viola syllabus that last appeared in
the 2010 and 2006 Manual of Syllabuses.
Examination in these syllabuses will cease at the end
of 2011, after which time only the Viola syllabus that
appears in the 2011 Manual of Syllabuses will be
examined.
The Board has published two new publications to
support the evaluated syllabus, extending the Series
1 Grade Books to Sixth Grade (see Publications). The
following volumes may be used with the syllabus:
Viola Series 1 (Preliminary to Sixth Grade)
Viola Technical Work (2006)
The two volumes that have been added to Series 1
(Fifth Grade and Sixth Grade) may also be used as a
source of repertoire for candidates preparing for
examination with the form of this syllabus that last
appeared in the 2010 Manual of Syllabuses.
Withdrawals
Piano
One years notice of the withdrawal of the old
Piano syllabus, last printed in the 2008 Manual
of Syllabuses, is hereby given.
From the start of 2012, only the Piano syllabus
shown in the 2011 Manual of Syllabuses will be
available for examination.

General Syllabus News
Musicianship and Theory
The Federal Board has authorised a change to the
Musicianship and Theory syllabuses. The change
affects First Grade to Fourth Grade in both syllabuses
in the area of Memory. The effect of the change is
to remove the requirement to memorise folk songs.
Memorisation of folk songs will no longer form part
of either written or aural examinations (where
appropriate) in Musicianship or Theory. This change
takes effect immediately. For further information, please
refer to the Musicianship and Theory syllabuses.
Syllabus reviews
The double bass, classical guitar, flute and
percussion syllabuses are under review during 2011.
If you wish to participate in the syllabus review
process, please visit the Federal Office website,

Your Path to AMEB Diplomas
Starting Out
Prior to Level One examinations,
pianists can sit for a P Plate for Piano
non-graded assessment. Pianists in
the very earliest stages of their training
can undertake an assessment from
any one of the three books in this
program. A certificate is awarded at
the completion of each book
assessment, and musicians completing
all three book assessments are also
awarded a P Plate Piano Licence.
Grade Examinations
Level One examinations cover Preliminary Grade through to Fourth Grade inclusive. Within these
grades, candidates demonstrate the fundamental and developing skills required for this subject.
Level Two examinations are incrementally more challenging and demanding. This level includes
Fifth Grade to Eighth Grade, and for many instruments is often capped with the Certificate of
Performance. From Sixth Grade through to Licentiate level, there is an additional requirement of
a pass in a written examination before the certificate or diploma is awarded. Please consult the
table on page 15.
For Leisure Syllabus examinations and CPM Syllabus examinations conclude at Level Two and
do not have any additional requirements.
Diploma Examinations
Level Three examination success leads to the prestigious Associate, Licentiate and Fellowship
Diplomas. Successful candidates will have their name printed in the AMEB Manual of Syllabuses
edition for the year after they receive their diploma. Bonus points are awarded to AMEB diploma
recipients towards tertiary entrance to some universities such as the University of NSW. Please
consult individual tertiary institutions for more information.
Diploma reports are despatched from AMEB (NSW) after results and additional requirements
have been verified. Please allow two weeks from the date of examination to receive your results.
Results for all examinations are also available to teachers through the online system, AMEB
Connect. Candidates can access these results if their teacher has provided them with candidate
access. Diploma results will not be given to anyone over the phone.
Preparing for the AMusA Practical Examination
The Associate Diploma is highly respected in the international music community and recognises
a sophistication of musical understanding and performance abilities that are well above the
requirements for Eighth Grade.
Teachers and candidates are actively encouraged to use the stepping stone level of the Certificate
of Performance, currently offered for Piano, Cello, Clarinet, Saxophone and Singing. This
examination can follow Eighth Grade, providing additional performance experience and examiner
feedback as a student's technique and interpretive skills continue to refine and develop.
8
2011 teachers handbook
Carefully read the objectives for the Associate examinations listed in the 2011 Manual of
Syllabuses before entering for the examination. The success rate for Associate examinations is
much lower than for Grade examinations. It is therefore suggested that teachers with limited
experience in presenting candidates at Diploma level obtain advice from a more experienced
teacher before entering candidates for AMusA.
Please consult the Teacher Support section of the AMEB (NSW) website
(www.ameb.nsw.edu.au) for useful Diploma preparation information.
The AMEB (NSW) Conferring of Diplomas Ceremony
Successful Associate, Licentiate and Fellowship candidates who have provided AMEB (NSW)
with evidence of their completion of any Additional Requirements will be invited to attend the
annual Conferring of Diplomas Ceremony. Candidates who successfully complete all
requirements in 2011 will be awarded their diplomas at a ceremony held on Sunday 11 March
2012.
This ceremony is a wonderful opportunity to formally recognise an artist's years of dedication
and share their achievement with peers, teachers, family and friends. Gowns are available for
hire from AMEB (NSW) and stoles can be purchased. This academic regalia can be worn for all
future academic ceremonies.
Successful candidates who are not able to be present to receive their award in person will be
admitted 'in absentia' to the diploma and the certificate will be mailed following the ceremony.

1. Teacher number
The relationship between the enrolling teacher and
AMEB (NSW) takes the form of a contract. Therefore,
the teacher or person enrolling a candidate must be
at least 18 years of age. All people enrolling
candidates are entered onto our database and
assigned a teacher number. Please record this
number on the inside front cover of your Teachers
Handbook and in your annual AMEB Manual of
Syllabuses as it will need to be quoted in any
correspondence with AMEB (NSW). If this is your first
enrolment, please leave this field blank. If you are
submitting a personalised enrolment form, leave
fields 13 and only complete new or altered
information in field 4.
2. Teacher/private entrant category
This information helps AMEB (NSW) staff to know
whether you are a Music or Speech and Drama
teacher or a private entrant over 18 years of age who
is entering candidates. Ticking the I am a teacher
box ensures that you are kept abreast of syllabus
issues and sent information relevant to teachers of
Music or Speech and Drama.
3. I have changed address
When entering your enrolment form onto our database,
ticking this box ensures that our office is informed that
an existing teacher or private entrant has changed
address. If your address has changed since your last
enrolment, tick this box and complete all contact
details to ensure that our database is up to date.

4. Teacher/private entrant contact details
This section must reflect the details of the person
over 18 years who will sign the enrolment form in
section 10. Complete all fields of this section
including your email address. This will ensure that all
AMEB correspondence will reach you.
5. Examination series required
Please tick one box only per enrolment form,
nominating the practical examination period in which
you wish your student(s) to be examined.
6. Private studio
Only complete this section of your enrolment form if
you want your candidates to be examined at a pre-
arranged non-AMEB venue.
If the studio belongs to another teacher, or is a
school venue, you must obtain permission from
the person or institution involved before enrolling
candidates.
Any hire costs for the studio/venue must be met
by the client.
In the space provided, include the teacher
number of the teacher whose venue will be used.
AMEB (NSW) will only assign an examiner to a
particular studio if a minimum of four hours of
examining time per instrument is available and
scheduled.
Studios must meet the criteria for use of private
studios outlined in the Policies section of the
AMEB (NSW) website: www.ameb.nsw.edu.au
AMEB (NSW) reserves the right to alter the
location of the examination to facilitate the
provision of an examiner.
Private studio examinations are most likely to be
scheduled on a weekday.
7. Preferred examination day
Please indicate in the appropriate box whether your
candidates would prefer a weekday or a Saturday.
Metropolitan teachers should note that weekday
examinations at Clarence Street are often far less
busy than Saturday examination days and can
provide a more relaxed environment for your younger
students. Tick the Either box if you have no
preference.
8. Examination area
This field is optional and can be left blank. Preferred
suburbs but not venues will be considered. At the
discretion of AMEB (NSW), examinations may be
scheduled in alternative areas.
9. Fees
Enrolment forms without full payment or credit
card authorisation will not be accepted, and your
enrolment form will be returned. Part payments
will not be accepted.
For each enrolment form, enter the total amount
of enrolment fees, including late fees of $10 per
candidate per enrolment if less than one week
late or $55 per candidate per enrolment if more
than one week late.
Fees cannot be transferred from one candidate to
another or from one year to the next.
We accept payment by Mastercard, Visa, single
cheque or single money order. Make your cheque
or money order payable to AMEB (NSW) and
staple your payment to the enrolment form. If you
are paying by credit card the authorisation
section must be completed and signed by the
owner of the card.
If for any reason a cheque or credit card is not
accepted by the bank, a fee of $15 (including
any applicable bank fees) will be applied to each
transaction.
10. Certification
It is essential that the person who completes and
signs each enrolment form is 18 years or over,
and in doing so certifies their:
awareness of the conditions of enrolment
agreement to abide by the regulations and the
requirements in the AMEB (NSW) 2011
Teachers Handbook and the 2011 Manual of
Syllabuses, and the policies on the AMEB
(NSW) website (www.ameb.nsw.edu.au)
awareness of their responsibility to inform
candidates and parents of these requirements,
including the refund and transfer policies.
Failure to sign and date the certification will result
in the enrolment form being returned. A $5 fee

received, candidates may be issued additional
candidate numbers. This may result in the delayed
release of certificates and a lack of examination
history for the candidate.
1. Candidate number
Please use the candidates number from previous
examinations. This can be found via AMEB
Connect.
If this is their first enrolment, the candidate will
be issued with a unique number. This number
should be used for all of their future written and
practical examination enrolments with AMEB
(NSW) regardless of teacher.
2. Title
Include a title (Mr, Mrs, Miss, etc) for each candidate.

13
amebnsw
3. Candidate given names and surname
Check with each candidate or their parents to ensure
that the candidates full certificate name (including
middle name/s) is registered neatly in block letters in
these two columns.
4. Date of birth
Confirm this information with each candidate before
submitting your enrolment. Providing correct dates of
birth ensures accurate linkage to the candidates
AMEB history, particularly if their full name is not
unique in our database.
5. Sex
Enter M (male) or F (female) for each candidate.
6. Subject code
Each syllabus/subject/grade has been given a subject
code which is listed in the Manual of Syllabuses and
also at the back of this handbook. Enter the subject
code for each candidate. Your code must be correct
for either old or new syllabus where applicable
correct codes can be checked on the AMEB (NSW)
website, under Examinations. Listing accurate
subject codes and descriptions at the time of
enrolment will avoid penalty fees should changes be
requested at a later date.
7. Subject
Please describe syllabus and subject in full.
8. Grade
Check and list the correct grade for each candidates
enrolment.
9. Fee
List fees for each candidate referencing pages 3141
as applicable.
10. Special requests
Examination period availability should be noted in this
box. It is important that each candidate and his/her
family are consulted, prior to the lodgement of your
enrolment, about dates to be avoided and these are
clearly listed in this box. AMEB (NSW) will make
every effort to accommodate requests made at the
time of enrolment and this service is offered free of
charge to encourage a streamlining of the
administration involved in processing enrolments.
Requests that are not included on the enrolment
form will incur a fee of $25 per candidate per
examination. Requests will not be processed
without the accompanying fee. Teachers must
ensure that candidates and their families are
aware of this fee.
You may not request specific examination dates
and times, but you may indicate dates that are
NOT possible for your candidates.
Requests for examinations in the Second
Metropolitan Series to be held outside the
teachers Postcode Period must be submitted by
10 June 2011. These will incur a transfer fee of
$55 per candidate per exam, up to a maximum
of $220.
Unless a candidate has been or is being taught
by an AMEB (NSW) examiner, requests regarding
the scheduling or non-scheduling of specific
examiners will not be considered.
Please indicate if your candidates are enrolled for
more than one AMEB examination within a given
time frame (with different teachers), or are also
enrolled for a written examination during your
examination period.
Please indicate if you wish siblings to be
examined consecutively, as examinations are
usually arranged by grade.
While we do our best to satisfy any special
requests, we cannot guarantee that this will
always be possible as we are dependent on
availability of venues, examiners and time
constraints.
Please keep all special requests as brief and
clear as possible.

Additional Notes
Candidates who have been taught by an AMEB
examiner
Candidates who enrol for an examination, who
are, or previously have been, taught by someone
who is an AMEB (NSW) examiner, should
indicate this in the Special Requests section of
the enrolment form. This information will ensure
that the examiner is not scheduled to examine
his/her own candidates, either past or present.
If rescheduling is necessary due to a candidates
failure to indicate this information on the
enrolment form, additional transfer fees may
be charged.
School examinations
If any of your candidates are likely to be required
to undertake NAPLAN tests, School Certificate
tests, Higher School Certificate examinations or
other important examinations or school
commitments during your scheduled examining
period, please state the dates to be avoided in the
Special Requests section of the enrolment form.
The information printed inside the front cover of
this handbook can assist you in determining
these dates.
FMusA/FSDA
FMusA and FSDA candidates MUST submit their
proposed programs to AMEB (NSW) no later than
29 April 2011. Once these programs have been
approved by the AMEB, candidates will receive a
program approval letter.
Photocopies of prerequisites MUST be attached
to the enrolment form (refer to the 2011 Manual
of Syllabuses).
Program notes for FMusA examinations should
be forwarded to the State Office by email in Word
format no later than Friday, 12 August 2011.
LMusA program approvals
If a program approval is needed, it should be
attached to the enrolment form. No requests for
LMusA program approvals will be accepted after
29 July 2011.
Reminders
By signing the enrolment forms and entering
candidates for examinations you have agreed to abide
by the regulations contained in this handbook and on
the AMEB (NSW) website. If you are enrolling
students for examinations, it is your responsibility to
inform your students and their parents or guardians
of all the conditions of enrolment and the examination
requirements.
Check Dates Carefully Before Submitting
Your Enrolment
You should be prepared for your students
examinations to be scheduled at any time during the
advertised periods. Please be aware that some of
these dates fall at the beginning or end of
government school holiday periods and you should
therefore advise your students of the possibility of
being scheduled on those dates.
A fee of $25 per candidate per examination will be
charged for any special request that is not written
on the original enrolment form.
Special requests will not be accepted less than two
months before the commencement of the relevant
examination series or postcode period. Further
information regarding AMEB (NSW) policies can be
found on the Policies section of our website
www.ameb.nsw.edu.au
Avoiding Other Additional Fees
The AMEB (NSW) is not responsible for delays
caused by the postal services. To allow for any
irregularities and avoid late fees, it is best to allow a
few extra days before the due closing date for
enrolments to ensure that the forms reach us in time.
Envelopes postmarked after the closing date will incur
a late fee.

Confirmation of Enrolment
You will receive a computer-generated confirmation of your enrolment(s) as soon as practicable
after the information has been processed. The Confirmation of Enrolment is your tax invoice and
your only official receipt from the AMEB (NSW). Please promptly and thoroughly check this
important document.
The Confirmation of Enrolment provides the opportunity for teachers to double-check that
all information relevant to their candidates has been accurately recorded. Please advise us
of any errors immediately in writing. Failure to notify AMEB (NSW) of an anomaly (correct
name, grade, subject code, etc) on the Confirmation of Enrolment within 21 days of the
notification being sent will result in an additional $25 fee per candidate per examination.
The way the name is spelt on the Confirmation is the way it will appear on the certificate.
Replacement certificates will incur a fee of $27.50 each. It is not possible to substitute alternative
candidates at this stage. Please note that the preferred venue listed on your Confirmation of
Enrolment may be changed, subject to suitability and availability as set out on page 18 of this
handbook. If you have NOT received a Confirmation of Enrolment within one month of the closing
date, the teacher or private entrant who signed the enrolment form should check the progress of
the enrolment via AMEB Connect (www.ameb.nsw.edu.au). If examination details cannot be
found, please telephone the AMEB (NSW) to check the status of your enrolment.
Practical Examination
Practical examinations are conducted in accordance with all syllabus requirements set out in the
2011 Manual of Syllabuses and in accordance with the policies and procedures in this
handbook. Teachers enrolling for an Old syllabus must consult the Manual of Syllabuses edition
specified in the subject codes on pages 3239 of this handbook.
Notice of Practical Examination
Every effort will be made to ensure that a Notice of Practical Examination for each candidate is
dispatched to the teacher/private candidate approximately three weeks before the examination.
These notices must be given to candidates for presentation at the examination venue. Our
website provides provisional examination dates as soon as they are scheduled. You can check
these provisional dates via the AMEB Connect section of our website (www.ameb.nsw.edu.au).
It is possible that your candidates examinations may be scheduled on a weekday or Saturday.
It is also possible that examinations may be scheduled during school holidays. Please check
carefully the day, date, venue and studio number (if applicable) on each candidates Notice of
Practical Examination.
Additional Teacher Responsibilities
Make sure your candidates instruments are correctly assembled and tuned before entering
the examination room. This is the responsibility of the teacher, not the examiner.
Arrange for an accompanist (where applicable) and cover any costs involved.
Advise candidates undertaking practical examinations that they MUST have original copies of all
the music required for performance, in the appropriate order, at the beginning of the examination.
17

amebnsw
Other Examination Matters for the Teacher to Note
Teachers are not allowed to alter the examination schedule for their students under any
circumstances. Examiners will only accept schedule alterations initiated by the AMEB
(NSW) office.
Pre-recorded accompaniment is not acceptable, unless specified by the syllabus. In For
Leisure or CPM syllabuses where candidates wish to use backing tracks, ensure that your
students understand that it is their responsibility to provide and operate suitable equipment
for such performances. AMEB (NSW) does not provide facilities such as CD players for the
use of backing tracks.
If a candidate presents a piece of music (other than Own Choice or Extra List) that is not
listed in the syllabus for which they are enrolled, their mark will be downgraded. For more
information, see Regulation 25 in the 2011 Manual of Music Syllabuses.
Refund Policy
The AMEB (NSW) enrolment, examination preparation and scheduling processes incur
significant costs for the AMEB (NSW), irrespective of whether candidates actually present on the
day of their examinations. However, if a candidate wishes to withdraw from his/her examination,
it must be submitted in writing and will be considered under the following conditions:
A full refund (less $20 per candidate per examination administration fee) will be issued if a
written request is received before the Series closing date or at least three months prior to
the commencement of the relevant series (Series 04), regional practical examination period
(Series 02, 08), or postcode period (Series 03, 10).
A 50% refund will be issued if written advice of withdrawal is received as follows:
written examinations (Series 01, 05) at least one month before the commencement of
the particular series (see page 23).
practical examinations at least two months before the commencement of the relevant
series (Series 04, 06, 09), regional practical examination period (Series 02, 08), or
postcode period (Series 03, 10). See page 22 of this handbook for dates.
Exact dates for refunds as described above can be found in the tables for practical and
written examinations that appear in the centre pages of this handbook.
No refund will be applicable after the time frames outlined above. It is the responsibility of
the teacher to ensure that their students and their families are aware of these deadlines.
Postcode Policy Second Metropolitan Series
Due to the large number of candidates entered for the Second Metropolitan Series of
Examinations it is necessary for the AMEB (NSW) to divide the examinations into different
periods. The teachers suburb as indicated on the enrolment form will be used to schedule that
teachers candidates into a particular postcode period. Postcode periods are indicated on
page 22 of this handbook and, in order to provide continuity for teachers and candidates, they
do not change from year to year.
Regardless of a teachers post office box postcode, candidates will be examined according to the
postcode of the teachers suburb that appears on the enrolment form. If your teaching studio
address is different from your mailing address, you should indicate this clearly by attaching a

18
2011 teachers handbook
letter of explanation to the enrolment form. In this event the postcode period will apply to the
teaching studio address.
Where a teacher has arranged for examinations to be held in another private studio, the
postcode period of that studio will apply for examination scheduling. This does not apply to
official venues offered by AMEB (NSW).
In the event of a teacher changing address between the time of enrolment and the examination
date, the original enrolling postcode will apply.
Venues
Metropolitan examinations
Venue Examination Availability
Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Penrith* Weekdays and Saturdays
*available in limited examination periods
AMEB Clarence Street, Sydney CBD Weekdays and Saturdays
Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Sydney CBD Saturdays only
If candidates nominate an examination on either a weekday or a Saturday, we will do our best to
accommodate that request. However, if this is not possible due to the availability of studios
and/or examiners, candidates will be scheduled at the most appropriate venue on either a
weekday or a Saturday at the above listed venues.
Warm-up rooms
Where a warm-up room is provided, it is for the purpose of warming up and tuning instruments
and not for rehearsing repertoire. Should additional time or privacy be required, studio hire is
available at the Clarence Street Level 8 studios during business hours.
Clarence Street Level 8 Studios
Singing, brass, woodwind and string candidates of all grades, and piano candidates presenting
for AMEB practical examinations at an Eighth Grade, Certificate of Performance, Associate or
Licentiate level at this venue are invited to use our warm-up facilities for five minutes per
candidate before their examination. Warm-up facilities for lower grades of piano at this venue
should not be expected.
Other AMEB examination venues
Warm-up facilities are not available to candidates or their accompanists at other AMEB
examination venues. Such facilities cannot be guaranteed and should not be expected.
Private studios
There must be a minimum total of four hours examining per instrument category before an
examiner may be scheduled to examine at a private venue/studio. If teachers using a venue
have a combined total of less than four hours examining, the AMEB (NSW) will organise
another venue for the examinations.
It may be possible for examination timetables in private studios to be re-ordered, only if a
request is submitted in writing to the AMEB (NSW) office not less than 48 hours before the
examination timetable. Teachers and/or studio hosts are NOT to make contact with
examiners regarding timetables.

19
amebnsw
It is the responsibility of the visiting teacher to ensure that the private studio is available and
appropriate for your students examinations.
It is expected that candidates and visiting teachers will respect the facilities at the
examination studio by waiting only in the area directed by the host teacher, leaving the
premises on completion of examinations, and not interrupting examinations in progress.
If you elect to have your students examined at another teachers private studio, your contact
details may be given to the venue owner.
To see if your studio meets our criteria as an examination venue, please consult the Policies
section of the AMEB (NSW) website (www.ameb.nsw.edu.au).
Please note that recording the whole, or any part, of any AMEB examination is not permitted.
Federal examinations
Federal music practical examinations (LMusA, FMusA, LTMusA) will be held at a Sydney
metropolitan venue to be determined by the AMEB (NSW).
Examination Reports
Queries and complaints
AMEB examinations are conducted as a formal process on a strict timetable. In order that other
candidates are not disadvantaged, it is not possible for examiners to discuss reports or other
examination issues with teachers, parents or candidates at the examination venue.
Queries or objections about any examination results or examiners must be set out in writing and
sent by email or post addressed to the State Manager. Verbal objections will not be accepted and
no complaint will be considered more than 10 days after receipt of the examination report.
Letters of complaint concerning an examiner will be forwarded to that examiner for comment,
after which a response will be issued by the State Manager. More information can be obtained
from the Policies section of the AMEB (NSW) website (www.ameb.nsw.edu.au).
Trainee examiners
A trainee examiner may be present during grade examinations. This examination experience is
vital for trainees in order to maintain AMEBs high examining standards. In such an instance,
the candidate will receive the Supervising Examiners result and written report.
Diploma examinations
Diploma examinations require two specialist examiners. In instances where it is not feasible to
schedule two examiners in a regional area, AMusA candidates will be required to travel to
Sydney during the period 17 September to 7 October to be examined. LMusA and FMusA
examinations are held in Sydney during the September/October school holidays and/or days
surrounding this period. Transfers are not possible from Series 4.
Candidates are advised that they must bring a copy of their music for the examiners so that they
can be certain of the edition from which the candidate is working.
Provisional enrolments
Provisional enrolments will not be accepted for practical examinations.

Practical Exam Transfers
Examination scheduling is a process that involves a
great deal of variables, and the magnitude of this task
necessitates closing dates that may be some months
prior to the examination dates. We understand that
situations out of your control may arise at short
notice. Please be aware that this creates a challenge
for all concerned.
A great volume of transfer requests are received by
AMEB (NSW) each week, and the processing of these
transfers disrupts and slows down the rate at which
we can release completed examination schedules for
all candidates.
Details for the transfer process and associated fees
are listed below.

per candidate per examination or a maximum of $220 fee per studio.
Apart from Exceptional Circumstances, transfers from the designated period for Series 4 (Diploma) examinations
and for Accordion, Harp, Electric Organ and Organ examinations in the Second Metropolitan Series will not be
permitted.

2011 teachers handbook
After Scheduling
Once the date has been scheduled, it is not possible
to arrange alternative dates for practical examinations
for any reason other than on substantiated medical,
religious, school endorsed educational grounds,
verified work-related grounds or relevant generally
recognised days of cultural significance. No other
grounds for transfer will be considered.
If a candidate is unable to attend his or her practical
examination due to one of the above reasons, an
alternative date may be offered, provided that:
venues and examiners are available
a written request for a transfer has been
submitted to the AMEB (NSW) no later than two
weeks after the scheduled examination date.
If AMEB (NSW) is unable to reschedule a country
examination while examiners are still touring that
particular region, candidates requesting a transfer will
be required to travel to Sydney.
Medical transfers must include a medical certificate
from a registered doctor stating:
when the condition emerged
how the condition affected the candidates ability
to be examined
when it is anticipated the candidate will be fit to
undertake their examination.
In some cases it may be necessary for the doctor
and/or parent/guardian to also complete a Medical
Transfer form.
Other transfers (as outlined above) must include an
official letter from the school, workplace or relevant
organisation outlining the reason for the candidates
inability to attend the examination.
Transfer fees for all transfers are as follows:
$55 for Level 1 (Preliminary 4th Grade) per
candidate per examination
$66 for Level 2 (5th8th Grade and Certificate of
Performance, any CPM Advancing Step) per
candidate per examination
$99 for Level 3 (Associate Licentiate) per
candidate per examination.
Submit the above documents and payment to AMEB
(NSW) office together with a clear indication as to
when the candidate will be able to undertake the
examination. Transfer dates may be offered with
minimal notice. Every effort will be made to
accommodate transfers, but rescheduling cannot be
guaranteed and should not be expected.
If a transfer cannot be arranged, your transfer request
and fee will not be processed.
Please note: It is not possible under any
circumstances to transfer examinations to the
following year.
Studio Transfers
Where a teacher has arranged for examinations to be
held in a particular studio in the Second Metropolitan
Series, the postcode period of that studio will apply
for examination scheduling. If a studio has applied for
a transfer to another postcode period, all students
attending that studio will be examined in the
nominated period.
Change of Teacher
Teachers should ensure that they only enrol
candidates whom they are currently teaching and
who have agreed to sit for an AMEB (NSW)
examination.
In order to safeguard the interests of all parties, any
request to change the teacher listed in an enrolment
after the initial enrolment has been processed
requires confirmation from the enrolling teacher.
There will be a fee of $55.00 charged to reassign
candidates from one teacher to another or from/to
private candidate status after enrolment. A Change of
Teacher form can be downloaded from the Teacher
Support section of our website
(www.ameb.nsw.edu.au). Please complete and
forward this form to the AMEB (NSW) office with your
$55 payment.
Please note: A change of teacher does not change
the exam period. The exam will still be set according
to the original enrolling teachers postcode. An
additional fee of $55.00 will apply in order to move
the exam to another period. Candidates may not
change the enrolling teacher once the examination
has taken place. This policy applies to all AMEB
(NSW) examinations.

Written Examinations
Written examinations are conducted in accordance
with syllabus requirements set out in the AMEB 2011
Manual of Syllabuses and in accordance with the
policies and procedures in this handbook.
Candidates may enrol for two grades of written
examinations in the same series provided the
examinations are not scheduled at the same time.
Notice of Written Examination
A Notice of Written Examination for each candidate is
dispatched to the teacher/private candidate
approximately two weeks before the examination.
Please note the precise time, date and location for
the examination. You will receive two notices in the
case of Music Craft and Musicianship exams that
have an aural and written component. These may be
listed on opposite sides of the one A4 page, so please
ensure you check both sides of your Notice of Written
Examination carefully.
This notice must be given to the candidate to present
at the examination venue.
Teachers should ensure that their students:
attend the venue indicated on the Notice of
Written Examination
arrive at the examination venue at least 20
minutes before the scheduled commencement
time. Reading time (if applicable) will commence
10 minutes before the advertised start of the
examination
only take pens, pencils, erasers and rulers into
the examination room. Any paper product will be
confiscated with the exception of an approved
English/Foreign Language Dictionary and text
required for Sixth Grade and Seventh Grade
Speech and Performance
do not take mobile phones or computer
equipment into the examination
complete the attendance slip correctly
check that they receive the correct paper from
the supervisor as more than one paper may be
issued at the same examination venue
know that Theory of Music paper is white, the
Musicianship paper is blue, the Music Craft
paper is yellow and Speech and Performance
Theory is green
write their correct candidate number on the paper.
Candidates whose first language is not English may
use a dictionary in written examinations, providing
that the dictionary is foreign language/English.
Candidates should advise the State Office in writing
that they intend to use a dictionary when they enrol,
outlining their reasons for doing so. The AMEB (NSW)
will then provide the candidate with a letter of
authorisation that must be presented to the
examination supervisor prior to the commencement
of writing. The supervisor will check that the
dictionary falls within the guidelines, and that it does
not include any other written material.
Before the scheduled commencement of all written
examinations (except the aural component of the
Musicianship and Music Craft examinations), 10
minutes reading time is allowed. No writing will be
permitted during this time. At the commencement
of the aural Musicianship and aural Music Craft
examinations, candidates will be given a short
listening time in order to become familiar with the
sounds used on the examination recording. At the
conclusion of the aural Musicianship and aural Music
Craft examinations candidates will have 10 minutes
checking time during which writing is permitted.
Manuscript paper for rough working will be provided
for all aural and written examinations. The supervisor
will collect all unused working papers; no manuscript
paper may be taken from the room. Only the worked
paper (and any attached sheets) will be considered
for marking. Pencilled answers are only acceptable if
they are clearly legible.
Written Venues
Sydney metropolitan area
Examinations will be held throughout the metropolitan
area in schools, colleges and community halls.
Teachers should indicate their preferred examination
area on the enrolment form. However, where a
nominated examination area is unavailable, or where

28
2011 teachers handbook
no preference of area is specified, candidates will be
directed to the available venue nearest to the
teachers address.
The Confirmation of Enrolment will indicate the
teachers preferred examination area. Please notify
the AMEB (NSW) immediately if this area is incorrect.
While every effort is made to accommodate
candidates in the preferred area, the capacity and
availability of venues may require alterations without
notice. Please check the venue carefully on the
Notice of Written Examination.
All Speech and Drama candidates may be directed to
one central Sydney venue.
Candidates for Music Craft and Aural Musicianship
examinations will be directed to central examination
venues. Music Craft Aural and Written components
are held on the same day (Monday, 22 August) at the
same venue (with the exception of Fifth and Sixth
Grades of Music Craft), but the Aural and Written
components of Musicianship may be held at different
venues.
Examination areas country
A minimum of 10 candidates per day is required in
order for any examination venue to be established.
For this reason teachers are advised that they should
collaborate with other teachers in their area and enter
candidates for the same session in order to ensure a
local venue. Teachers must be aware that the
preferred area nominated on the Confirmation of
Enrolment may vary from the venue finally allocated
on the Notice of Examination. Candidates in country
areas may be required to travel to the nearest
available venue. However, in response to teacher
feedback, the AMEB (NSW) agrees that no candidate
should travel more than 125 kilometres (each way)
from their teachers studio to the examination venue
on any one day. Students sitting for Musicianship
examinations with Aural components should travel
no more than 70 kilometres (each way) from their
teachers studio to the examination venue on each
of the two days involved. If a Musicianship candidate
travels further than 70 kilometres (each way) on one
day, then the other component of the examination will
be held in their teachers local centre. If scheduling
has already commenced, late enrollees may have to
travel further than the distances indicated above.
Written Transfers
Transfer of examinations between series
It is not possible under any circumstances to transfer
examinations from one year to another. However,
candidates may transfer from one written series to
another in the same year. This can be arranged free
of charge provided the AMEB (NSW) receives written
notification at least one month before the
commencement of the series in which the candidate
was originally enrolled. A transfer fee of $55 will apply
if less than one months notice is provided. The
AMEB (NSW) must be notified prior to the scheduled
examination.
Traditional written examinations and online
written examinations
It is not possible under any circumstances to transfer
from a traditional written examination to an online
examination or from an online written examination to
a traditional written examination.
Issue of Examination Results and
Certificates
Written examination results and certificates are issued
within eight weeks of the examination date. The
marked papers of all Theory of Music and Musicianship
candidates from Grades 13 are returned to the
teacher. Candidates for Grade 4 and above and all
candidates sitting for Music Craft examinations receive
a report from the assessor giving the marks awarded for
each section and any relevant comments. No Music
Craft papers will be returned to teachers. However,
teachers may come to the office to view the papers at a
cost of $10 per paper. Arrangements to view papers
must be made in advance.
Reassessment of Written Examination
Papers
If you believe an error has been made, AMEB (NSW)
must be notified within 12 weeks of the examination
date. A reassessment can be arranged on the receipt
of a fee of $50. In the event that an error is
established this fee will be refunded. The criteria for
reassessment are limited only to cases of incorrect
29

amebnsw
addition of the marks and/or errors of fact. Requests
based on differences in interpretation or professional
judgement will not be considered.
All Music Craft papers and papers from Grade 4
upwards in Theory of Music and Musicianship with a
result of 63 or 64 will automatically be re-assessed by
a second assessor. The reviewed mark will be the
mark recorded and the reviewed report will be issued
to the teacher. The assessors decision is final and no
correspondence will be entered into regarding that
decision.
Provisional Enrolments
Candidates needing an additional requirement of a
written component in order to complete their AMusA
or LMusA examination, and who enrol in the May
series of written examinations, may submit a
Provisional Enrolment for the same grade and syllabus
for the August series as a safeguard against an
unsatisfactory result on the first attempt. This also
applies to Speech and Drama candidates who require
prerequisites in order to enrol for ADPA, LDPA or
FSDA practical examinations. In the event that the
candidate is successful in the first series, a full refund
(less $20 administration fee) will be issued provided
we receive written notification of the withdrawal by
13 July 2011. Enrolments for both series must be
made at the same time by the closing date for the
May written examinations, and the August enrolment
must be clearly marked Provisional Enrolment.

With the completion of its new studios in Sydney, AMEB (NSW) conducted a
thorough examination of pianos available in the market. Recommendations
were sought from key advisors and its keyboard examiners.
The result? Just like AMEB in Queensland and WA, AMEB (NSW) chose Kawai.
They selected 12 pianos in all, including a superb, handcrafted Shigeru Kawai
Concert Grand, based on reputation, recommendation and great value.
For performers, teachers and players at all levels, Kawai is the piano of the future.
