CHAPTER III DESIGN AND PROCEDURES OF THE RESEARCH

3.1

Research Design This research belongs to the area of analysis of the original and source text

which covers a study on annotated translation. Introspective and retrospective research are included in this annotated translation research. Introspective research is a research looking into the translator's own feelings and thought of why and how the texts are translated. It means that when she faced a problem in translating certain words/ phrases/ idioms/ clauses/ sentences then she wrote the problems and the solutions she had in her annotations. During the process of translatiom, the researcher asked herself a! In which part has the researcher had difficulty" b! #hat is the best translation for this word/phrase/idiom/clause/sentence in line with the context" c! #ere the difficulties grammatical, lexical, cultural or sylistic" d! #hy has the researcher translated as such" $ retrospective research is a study investigating the mental processes through the researcher's original memory immediately after she has translated by considering these following %uestions a! #hich theory of translation has the researcher used during the process of translation"

b! #hich structural rule has the translator used in rendering from &nglish into Indonesian and vice versa" c! Is the result of translation in line with the cultural context of source and target audience" d! 'as the result of translation fulfilled the purpose of the client"

Source of Data The source of data in this research is the text in a novel titled

Remembrance by (aith )ichmond, published by Imprint, *ollins +ublisher $ustralia. This novel was chosen because of its interesting story about an $theist $ustralian family living in a religious environment based on the viewpoint of the daughter of the family which was conveyed in detail.

3.3

Procedure of the Research In order to have a systematic research, the researcher will use the

following guideline a! The source text is read troughly to give a full understanding of the content. b! Independently, the researcher translates the source text into the target text. c! $t the same time, she marks down grammatical, lexical, cultural, and stylistic items, that have become a problem in the process of translating the text ,data!. d! The researcher takes only the most significant problems to be analy-ed due to the limited time allotted.

e! These problematic items are analy-ed and the researcher gives plausible reasons to the solving of the problems.

3.4. Collection of the Data The researcher/translator has collected the data from the translated text, which posed problems for him. The collected data are ./0 items in number. These ./0 data, 1/ of them are the most difficult to be translated. That is why the researcher/translator annotated only these selected 1/ data. $nother reason for choosing the 1/ data out of the ./0 items is that the time alloted to the researcher/translator was not enough to cover all the ./0 data.
