================== January - February - 1997 ==================
HOW CHURCHES GROW IN BRAZIL

UrielSilva served in theBrazilian Air Force during many years on theNortheastern bulge of

Brazil near Natal, the capital city of the State of Rio Grande doNorte. Taking his retirement, he moved to Brasilia, the Federal Capital, to seek opportunity for his family. He and his

family had been affiliated with an evangelical Christian Church but found his way to the
central Christian Church in Brasilia. He received a welcome and was soon affiliated, having

already been immersed. He began tostudy special courses inthe Christian College Extension
courses with David Sanders; to participate in visitation evangelism and to take part on the evangelism committeedistributing tracts, making visits, writing letters and evangelizing.
Now retired, he wanted to givehis lifeto preaching the gospel.

Then came the necessity to return to his home area in Northeast Brazil. Tliere, he sought a
Church of Christ as he knew it in Brasilia, but was unsucessful. Therefore, he began to have

meetings in his home and other homes until the attendance was such that he felt inclined to seek a building he could usefor thegrowing number of attenders. Thishe did. Then, as there

began tobeconverts, he felt he needed help to baptize and telephoned David and asked for help. David advised the elders of the local church and itwas decided that one of them would go to Natal, some 1500miles away, to help baptize and setthe church in order.
Aboutthis time, the first of November, Ruth Sanders wanted to visit the Sanders' daughter,

Starla Joy, in Recife, Pernambuco on Ruth's birthday (the 15th of November, which is the
Brazilian holiday of the Proclamation of the Republic}. Trying to make passage

arrangements for her and at the same time for the elder-evangelist to go to Natal, it was found that the elderly could get 45% discount on the airline (TRANSBRASIL) and David decided to accompany her to Recife and they would also visit the new work in Natal since they had to go through Natal on the way to Recife. So they offered their services to the church and accompanied Manoel Marinho, fellow elder and evangelist-preacher of the
central church in Brasilia.

Arriving in Nalal, after athree hour flight, they were met by Uriel. He took them all to his

home where they rested and prepared for the evening service. About 60 attended first service although the room would only seat 35 as they had places for the leaders, a small table, a portable electronic piano, a song leader, a preacher, a guitarist and a couple

amplifiers. Ahappy service followed, with testimonies, special songs and preaching by the visiting evangelist. Several decisions were made that night and the meeting was closed with prayer and an announcement that the next morning services were to be held out at abaptist camp ground where the converts would be baptized. Some thirty attended this first service of
orientation for baptism and 11 were baptized in the lake. The first Lord's Supper was then
commemorated and the new Church of Christ in PARNAMIRIM (suburb of Natal) as

officially opened. It was interesting to note that several of these decisions and baptisms wafrom various denominations as well as first time decisions. One man said he had waited 20 years to understand and bebaptized.

The evening service was a real increase with some 80 persons attending. There was much rejoicing even though 40 had to stand outside the big open door. At this very important service, open to the public, the preacher-leader, Uriel, was presented with a letter of
recommendation from the Church in Brasilia to him and the new congregation. Special

prayer was offered, "setting-aside" Uriel and his wife, Diana, to the leadership of the church.

On Monday afternoon, after having toured the city of Natal and its beaches, elder-evangelist

Al-trhouah a foreign "volunteer" missionary. L. David Sanders gave a special intensive English course in January 1996, to six Brazilian missionary candidates to Mozambique, Africa. Two of these candidates

are already in Mozambique and report beginning work in several locations. Since the official language in Mozambique is Portuguese, missionaries from Brazil can get into the work immediately. They need English for much of the business and legal requirements. With revived energy. L. David traveled to give a quick report among the churches in the USA in April, May and June. Upon returning to Brazil, he participated in the opening services of a new congregation in the satelite town of "Santa Maria" (St. Mary) sponsored by a sister church in another satelite town of Gama. There

Youth Congress of Central Brazil was planned for the Taguatinga satelite of Brasilia, for 2000 in attendance, but it only averaged 700-800 in sessions which were held during Carnival holidays in February. On the other hand, regional concfresses were held for the first time in three
other locations and averaged similar attendances.

On April 12th & 13th, David was in a village called Cristianopolis (so named because of the ^^evangelical
Christian" group who began a work in this new settlement), south of Goiania, at a special meeting for

the preachers and church workers with over 70 preachers present. He and three other preachers drove the 300
kilometers down and back. (One of the men, Antonio Lobo,

had graduated from College here, but moved to the South and now is hoping to return to some Christian service up

Added Responsibilty in Social Action

The Integrated Life Project here in Brasilia has been much on our hearts and in our daily efforts. We have been able to put the elderly community (ADONAJ) into better functioning; The local churches here are "adopting" the elderly at $100 a month which helps care for the nurse and workers, medicine and for the monthly food basket for each one. The directory has now turned over the supervision and teaching program of the S3 children in EL SHADDAI to Ruth and her co-director, Vicente de Paula. We are spending a great deal of time, much fffort and a lot of prayer into getting EL SHADDAI restructured and financially caredfor. Ruth is going out three orfour times weekly, plus working with others in helping to raise funds. We have asked Starla Jov to come doyvn from Recife and her work with the

Natal (northwest of Recife, on the coast) with another minister from BraziUa to inaugurate a new church andbaptize 11 new converts. Since it was but a 40 minute trip down to Recife on the way to Brasilia, they stopped over and had a good visit, walking along the beach every morning early (L. David and Luiz Carlos went into the ocean andfought the high waves). They visited the Association for Street Children where Starla and herfamily minister and the young Recife church. L. David

gave the evening message. This wonderful trip took away some ofthe trauma ofthe Sanders' earlier trip in July to Quito, Equador where they
were too sickfrom the high altitude to attend the Missionary Conference

they wentfor. Thankfully, they are in very good health once more at this
ending of1996 !

Besides being very busy with the Street Children and the Recife
Christian Church, Luiz Carlos and Starla report several family events

this year. Kyula Jane and husband. Junior, moved back to Brasilia where they are living with Junior'sfolks. Both are working but looking for betterjobs. Kalinka Jean isat home expecting a baby girl to be bom in January. Kaliula Joy has announced her engagement to Mario (but they will not marry until they both have betterjobs). Kevan Andrew will know inJanuary if he has toserve in the army now in January ( here at
18/19, they haveto serve unless exempted).
Luiz Fernando and Maria Joyce report that alt is well with theif

family. The two boys, Marcelo Jason andRafael will be going to church camp this week end. Their school term is closing this week. (They will be
on summer vacation now until the middle of February. In January,

Marcelo and Rafael will go to Northeast Brazil for the month.. Fernanda Louise (now 2 yrs. 8 mos.) is very much the "apple of our eyes "as every day we see her doing some very interesting things ! Daryl Bmce and Pamela Ruth keep in touch from Columbia,
South Carolina. Their children are growing and it is sometimes hard to
be sofarfrom them.
