DEPATMENT OF GEOGRAPHY AND RESOURCE UNIVERSITY OF GHANA, LEGON COURSE OUTLINE: 2014 GEOG 214/204 PRINCIPLES AND METHODS

OF CARTOGRAPHY

Instr !t"r: Mr. Sosthenes Kufogbe C" rs# D#s!r$%t$"n The course is designed to introduce students to the principles and methods of map making and the skills for interpreting features and extracting information from maps. The course focuses on
concepts and procedures used in discovering and applying relationships within and among maps. Emphasis is laid on fundamental principles, concepts, techniques and methods of cartography and their historical development. Thus, the course will include practical sessions on map interpretation and

measurements. Students will be introduced to the global positioning system ( !S" and its practical use as modern equipment for data collection. C" rs# "&'#!t$(#s The aim of this course is to introduce students to the principles and concepts for cartographic data capture and representation to enhance skills for interpreting the features on maps and extracting information from maps. Specifically, students should be able to# Examine the relationship between the structure and functioning of the map as a communication system $eview historical development of cartography with emphasis on the effects of new technologies Explain basic cartographic processes in the design and construction of maps Explain the basics of geographic and pro%ected coordinate systems and their spatial properties &iscuss the basic principles and techniques for mapping including lobal !ositioning System ( !S" M#t)"* "+ Ass#ss,#nt 'ssignments and roup !resentations (nterim 'ssessment End of semester examination
