Versions with ABS The antilock braking system has the following advantages: o maintenance of driving stability and steerability when braking in an emergency.

58

SAFETY AND COMFORT

O a reductionin stoppingdistancethrough optimal utilization of the adhesion between the tyres and the road; O rapid matchingof the braking force to different adhesion coefficients. This systemdoesnot compensate for careless driving. Be particularly carefulwhendriving on icy, wet or snow-covered roads. If the antilock braking systemis not operating perfectly it is automatically deactivated, but the car's conventionalbrakins systemcontinues to operate.

FUEL ECONOMY
If your car is equippedwith a dampercontrol system, select the SPORT setting when towing a trailer to handle the increased stresses.
Suggestions for reducing fuel consumption It is possible to save fuel without sacrificing performance. O Do not race the engine when waiting at traffic lights. Avoid accelerating rapidly. O Whenever possible shift up to a higher gear. O Fuel consumption increase when the tyres are underinflated and the windows are left open. O When you are not using the roof rack, remove it. O Never drive with the accelerator pedal floored. Fuel consumption will be lower if you accelerate gently and never exceed two-thirds of the maximum speed in each gear.

Towing information Your car must be fitted with an approved type of tow hitch, and the electrical system has to be appropriately modified. It is also necessary to fit rearview mirrors on the front wheel arches. Remember that gradeability will drop when towing a trailer. . When driving downhill use a low gear instead of braking constantly. Remember that the load on the tow hitch reduces the car's payload. Maximum towable weight means the weight of a fully laden trailer including accessories and luggage. Ensure the trailer's weight is under the maximum permissible weight indicted on the vehicle registration papers.

MAINTENANCE - INTERIM CHECKS

Lubrication Servicing We adviseyou usethe oils indicatedin the "Capacities" table to ensureoptimal engineoperation. Rememberto changethe oil and replacethe filter at the intervals indicated in the table on page127. The characteristics of the engineoils are described on page128. Driving Under Adverse Conditions "Adverse conditions" meanswhen the vehicleis mainly used for city driving, in dusty areas,on mountain roads, for towing a trailer, in adverseclimatic conditions, or at high speeds on motorways. Under these conditionsthe Lubrication Servicing shouldbe done more frequently than specified in the Service Schedule; moreover, the following partswhich are subjectto different degrees of wear should be checkedmore often: - spark plugs and air cleanerconditions - thicknessof front brake linings - tyre conditions/wear. Every 5,fi)0 km (3,000 miles) - Drain condensate from fuel filter (turbo ds) (seep. 85) The following should be changedor replaced: Every 10,000km (6,000 miles) - Spark plugs (turbo l6v) Every 60,000km (36,000miles) or 2 years - Engine coolant Every 100,000km (60,000miles) - Toothed timing belt - Toothedbalancingshaft drive belt (i.e. 16 v, turbo 16 v) - Thermostat and fuel pump (turbo ds) - Manual transmissionoil Every year - Brake fluid - Hydraulic clutch fluid

Additional Servicing Operations In addition to carrying out the ServiceSchedule, the following should also be checked: Every 500 km (300 miles) or before long trips - Engine oil level - Coolant level - Brake fluid level - Hydraulic clutch fluid level - Tyre pressure

The use of ORIGINAL LANCIA SPARE PARTS is highlt recommended asthey are the only parts offering the samequdity guaranteeas factory-installedparts. Use FIAT OIL-it's the oil used when LANCIA enginc erc manufactured.

FLUID LEVELS
Drain the oil when the engineis hot. For the disposalof old engineoil comply with the applicable regulationsin your country. When the car is mainly usedin dusty areasor for city driving, the engineoil and filter cartridge should be changedmore frequently than those recommended. When the car is new, do not change the oil before 1,000-1,500 km (600-900 miles). Whenthe fluid is cold: start the engine, let it run for one minure, switch off the engineand checkthe level on the dipstick on the sidemarkedwith "cold oil - olio freddo". When the fluid is warm (minimum run about l0 km - 6.2 miles): checklevel on the dipstick on the side marked with ,.hot oil olio caldo".

Automatic TransmissionFluid Move the selector lever to the "P" (park) position.

Check with the engineidling. To avoid cloggingthe transmission valves, usea lint-free rag to wipe the dipstick.

The fluid level may be checked when the fluid is cold or warm.

8l

FLUID LEVELS
Power steering fluid Check fluid level by removing cap B. The dipstick is part of the cap. When the engine is running, the fluid level should be at the maximum mark. If your car has an automatic load-leveling system, the power steering and the automatic load-leveling system share the same reservolr. To check the fluid level: O Remove guard A. O Fluid level should be between the MIN and MAX marks on w i t h t h e e n g i n er u n n i n g . the reservoir Brake fluid Check fluid level in reservoir every week, without removing the cap. Periodically check the operation of the brake fluid warning light on the instrument panel. Press the reservoir cap after turning the ignition key to MAR; the instrument panel warning light should turn on.

When the fluid is hot, it may be higher than the maximum mark. The fluid reservoir may be in different locations depending on the engine type. Power steering/automatic loadJeveling system fluid.

Use only DOT 4 class brake fluids for tapping up. We recommend using Tutela DOT 4 hydraulic brake fluid, which was used when the car was manufactured. Fluids with different characteristics could cuase permanent damage to the brake system rubber seals. Never let brake fluid come in contact with the body paint; wash immediately with water if fluid gets on the paint.

FUEL FILTER
Replacing the fuel filter (diesel engines) The variability in the degreeof purity of diesel fuel may require that the fuel filter is replaced before the specified intervals. The need to replacethe filter is indicated by enginemisfiring or jerky operation. Fuel filter C is screwed to bracket D.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Bleeder plug E is used to drain condensatefrom the fuel filter. Unscrew the plug a couple of turns. Retighten it when the fuel coming out is free of water.

Electronic control units Follow theserecommendationsto avoid damaging the car's electronic control units: O Ensure battery leads are properly connected to the terminal posts. O Never connect or disconnect the electronic module connectors when the ignitionis on. O Never disconnect the battery while the engine is running. O Do not use a battery charger to start the engine. O When charging the battery disconnect it from the car,s elec. trical system. O Disconnectthe electronicmodules when arc weldine the bodv panels. TYRES
Inflation Pressure and Wear A correct tyre inflation pressureis essentialnot only for the tyre life but also for driving safety as it affects the vehicle's road holding performance. Check the inflation pressuresof all the tyres including the spare every two weeks and before starting a long trip. Inflate the tyres to the pressureindicated on the inside of the front cover of this handbook. Incorrect tyre pressure can cause abnormal tread wear: A - Correct pressure:uniform tread wear. B - Underinflation: excessive shoulder tread wear. C - Overinflation: excessivecentre tread wear.

Note Inflation pressuresshould be checked when the tvres are cold. Tyre pressure will naturally increasewhen driving the car. If it is absolutely necessaryto inflate hot tyres, remember to add 0.3 bar to the recommendedpressures. An excessively low pressurewille causeoverheatingof tyres with the possibility of irreparable and destructive damage to the tyre inner structure. The tread depth must not be lessthan 1 mm. The lessthe tread depth, the greater the risk of skidding. Drive very carefully on wet roads. Tread wear indicators are moulded into some tyres. Replacethe tyres as soon as they are visible. Check the tread for irregular wear and the tyre sidewallsfor cuts. It the tyres are not wearing evenly take your car to a LANCIA ServiceCentre for servicrns.

45422

Important Impacts againstkerbs, road holes, various other obstacles a. ',',;, as prolonged driving on bad roads may damage )'our l\:.: If you get a puncture changethe wheel as soon as possible:J:,. -:,; on with a flat tyre will damage its structure.

TYRES- WINDSCREENWIPERS
\\-hen repairing a puncture, the tyre should always be taken off the rim to check for any damage to the inner structure. A tyre will age even if used little or not at all. The tyre ageing rr'ill be indicated by small cracks in the tread and on the walls and by humps. Ask a specialist to verify the fitness for use of any old tyres. Tyres that have been on a vehicle for more than six years should in any casebe checked by a specialist. In particular check that the spare tyre is not old or aged. If so, use it carefully and have it replaced as soon as possible. Never use used tyres unless you know for sure where they are coming from. Never use inner tubes with tubeless tyres. When replacing a tyre it is always a good idea to replace the inflation valve. Wheel rims which are designed for mounting tyres with inner tubes are not fit for mounting tubeless tyres. Every 10,000-15,000km (6000-9000miles) the tyres should be rotated from the front to the rear axle and vice versa to ensure even wear. Do not rotate the tyres using a criss-crosspattern.

Ensure the washer tubes are not clogged. The nozzles can be cleaned with a pin if necessary. Snow Chains Use of snow chains is subject to the regulations of the country where you are travelling. Snow chains must only be fitted to the front wheels. Retighten the chains after driving about 30 m (100 yards). Drive at moderate speedswhen using chains to avoid damaging the tyres. Do not drive for extendedperiods on snow-freeroads. Use only low-profile snow chains (max. height:15 mm); link size:20 mm.

BODY MAINTENANCE
Paint - Body The body paint not only makes your car beautiful, but protects rhe sheet steel used in body construction' Chips or scratches should immediately be touched up before rusting begins. .\hvays use original touch up paint (see Specifications Paint identification plate). Wash your car regularly. Washing should be done more frequentlf in areaswith high air pollution levels.or when parking under trees (sap may fall on the car). Bird droppings should be immediately and carefully removed for the car as uric acid is particularly damaging to the paintwork. Thoroughly wash the car as soon as possible. Wash the car using a low-pressure hose; sponge gently with a 2-490 detergent solution rinsing the sponge often. Rinse well and then dry using an air jet or chamois-leather. Dry the car carefully including less visible areas such as the door frames, bonnet and the headlight housings-those areas where water can stagnate. Do not park the car in a closed garage immediately after washing it so that air can circulate and dry the remaining water. Do not wash the car after it has been parked in the sun or if the bonnet is still hot to prevent damage to the high-glosspaint finish. The occasional use of wax or silicone polish will protect the car's paint and retain its original lustre. If the paint becomesdull due io rmog or other factors, use a slightly abrasive wax polish. Underbody The less visible body parts and box-type members have been treated by LANCIA using state-of-the-art techniques' This area of the car should be regularly checkedespeciallyif the car is used in adverse climatic conditions. Underbody inspections should be performed to ensure the body metal and mechanical assembliesare in proper condition. Some box sectionsare closed by plugs. These should be removed to check for rust when carrying out an underbody inspection. In particularly severeclimates the box sectionsand door frames should be sprayed periodically with protective compounds. These protective materials should by applied by specialisedbody shops. Spraying needs to be done at least every two years or annually under very severe conditions at the beginning of winter. In those countries where the car is covered by an anti-perforation warranty, follow the instructions given on the warranty card.

Pressedsteel wheels are standard. Cast alloy wheels are optional. AH type cast alloy wheels allow the car to be safely driven for a short distance without losing handling characteristics if you get a puncture. Important If you decide to use rims other than the factory-installed type (e.g., light alloy to replace pressedsteel or vice versa) the bolts should have appropriate dimensions. Both optional and standard tyres are tubeless radials.

TO\\' HITCH INSTALLATION

Th: :os hitch must be bolted to the body according to the draw::_r on this page. O-,herto*' hitches may be used as long as they are the proper s:ze lor the intended use and they are bolted to the car body at :he points indicated in the drawing. The electric coupling should be fastened by a bracket located ne\t to the hitch. Use the following couPlings: "CUNA 501" tYPe o Ball coupling (complies with CUNA NC 138-30 standard). "CUNA 501" tYPe o Socket coupling (complies with CUNA NC 438-15 standard)' Electrical connections should be made using a 12 V 7-pin plug and socket (complies with CUNA NC 165-30 standard). The electric system has to be modified by replacing the turn signal flasher unit with one that can handle twice the load-designed for three 21 W bulbs-ensuring proper turn signal operation. The earths of the car and the trailer should be connected with the 7-pin plug and a 2.5 mm2 cable. In addition to the turn signals and an electric braking system, only a l5 W interior trailer lamp may be connected to the car's electrical system. The electric braking system must be directly connected to the car's battery with a cable having a cross section not less than 2.5 mm". Note: LANCIA declines all responsibility for any installation which does not fully comply with the above stated installation procedure. iow hitches should comply with the motor vehicle regulations where the car is registered.

Brakes
Under no circumstances may the car's braking system be modified to control the trailer's brakes. The trailer's braking system must be entirely independent of the car's hydraulic s_vstems. The tow hitch installer is required to attach a plate of appropriate dimensions and made of a suitable material (in full view) at the same height as the hitch with the following words: MAXIMUM LOAD ON HITCH 90 kg.
