Carlisles FIRST ANNUAL MINITHON took place FRIDAY, MARCH 21, and exceeded the expectations of many. With an $8,000 goal, the hard work and dedication of various organizations and students allowed the event to blast past their goal and raise $18,477.20. BLASTING OFF FOR A CURE was this years miniTHON theme. Events such as WINGIN IT!, LINE DANCING, VOLLEYBALL and DODGEBALL TOURNAMENTS, and COFFEEHOUSE happened throughout the night to keep students and faculty awake and moving. Around 160 STUDENTS attended, making the night a fun one with friends while fighting for the kids. All proceeds benefit the FOUR DIAMONDS FUND, an organization that raises money for families affected by childhood cancer. This fund is directly related to HERSHEY MEDICAL CENTER, where familes seek medical treatment as well as emotional support. Though exhausted, students left knowing they made a difference for many families.

New team wins big for CHS

or most teams, their first year is a building year one very prone to mistakes, but filled with learning from those blunders along the way. However, Carlisle High Schools new Academic Decathlon team overcame any mistakes they may have made to reach second place in the central Pennsylvania Decathlon competition. This qualified them for the Pennsylvania state competition. The team won a total of 55 medals and seven individual trophies at the regional competition, and won four medals at states. I was surprised at how many medals we got, but I expected everyone to do really well, said Sean Collins, a senior on the team. Academic Decathlon teams are tested in subjects ranging from math and economics to art history and music. There are also speech, essay, and interview

componentswhich means for the team, there is a lot of studying that has to be done. You cant just study for one aspect [of the tests] and be really good at just that, said Collins. The spectrum of education [tested] ranges from speech to economics and art. The team met to practice only once before regionals. Most of the practice, they said, was done on their own time. There are close to 90 page study guides that questions can be asked from, said team member Matt Wisner, who described the broad range of questions as the hardest part of the competition. Although it may seem odd for students to voluntarily take on extra studying, team members said they appreciated the challenge. Its kind of inexplicable why you enjoy it, said member Patrick Myers. [But] although its basically taking tests all dayits a good group and a fun atmosphere.

very CHS student has owned a book or at least read one. Carlisles Interact Club made it their mission to make sure everyone gets that chance. From March 17-21, the club ran a book drive at the high school. Gathering over 200 donated books, it was one of the largest the high school has seen. However, it almost didnt happen. Previously, the club only organized food and clothing drives, as well as participated in Night without a Home and Relay for Life, among other activities. As the club discussed and voted on the years activities in October, club secretary Makenzie Langer remembers hearing someone say, Lets do a food drive!

After a second or two, though, they made a different choice. We always do food drives, lets do a book drive! Langer reported another club member said. The club members voted, and in the end decided that the book drive was the project they would plan. Although the drive was planned for January, Interact Club members soon hit a roadblock. Because of all the snow, there werent really any club [periods] to plan in, Langer explained. [The snow days] seemed to happen every time there was a club day! said club adviser Shani Schalles, who also mentioned that many preparations were interrupted because of the long stretch of inclement weather. Many of the activities we wanted to plan, we didnt do, she said.

Schalles also mentioned that it was mostly teachers donating the books, although for the clubs part, [the book drive] could have been advertised better. Junior Jazmyne Markham, the Interact Club president, said the purpose of the book drive is to provide local organizations [with books] that have clientele that could benefit from them. The recipient organization will be The Bookery bookstore, proceeds from which support the Bosler Library. Anytime you can recycle or repurpose something, its a good thing, said CHS librarian Valerie Bushey. Interact Club is a studentoriented volunteer club sponsored by the Rotary Club of Carlisle. It boasts 25 members and has organized dozens of service projects over the years.

andoras Box has been opened once again. Carlisle High Schools literary magazine, which has been on hiatus for the past few years, recently published its first issue. Although the anthol-

ogy had previously been published in print, Pandoras Box is now solely an online affair. One of the reasons [Pandoras Box] took a break was because of funding, said English teacher Sarah Clayville, who co-advises the publication with fellow English teacher Jason Griffith.

John Morton joined Pandoras Box as a way to express himself. Pictured is one of his pieces, Commandeered. Artwork: John Morton

Clayville mentioned that digitizing the magazine not only lowered expenses but also allowed for a more inclusive anthology. With multimedia, we can have people performing, students reading poetryand numbers [can now increase] too. Its not ten of the best [pieces] featured at the end of the year; we can have over 200 students [featured on the site] at a time, said Clayville. The Pandoras Box club has attracted many students from diverse backgrounds. I am very enthusiastic about sketching/drawing, and when I heard that there was a school publication that also featured art, I figured it would be fun, said senior John Morton, who moved to Carlisle from Germany this past year. Pandoras Box is a place where people can

write and create without being confined by a grading rubric. Co-editor-in-chief Spencer Pechart said, I have always been passionate about editing and viewing others work; it is enriching to help others find their voice and show them how to use it. [I like] being able to show off the creativity that CHS has to offer, he continued. Clayville agreed, saying her favorite part about being one of the clubs advisers is fostering a community of readers and writers at the high school. Morton emphasized, Pandoras Box is one of the few places in school that encourages actual expression and creativity. Raising dough: Culinary Arts Donut Day deemed a success

n Wednesday March 5, hundreds of CHS students flocked to the Culinary Arts program room for a special treat. Carlisle High Schools Culinary Arts class has been making donuts for Fasnacht Day (the day preceding the start of Lent) for nine years. Culinary Arts teacher Patricia Forney said, [Donut day] started out small and it wasnt this big till this year. Due to the overwhelming popularity of the donuts, the amount of supplies needed to make them has grown every year. The Culinary Arts program has had to

increase the amount of dry mix needed to make the donuts at a rate of 50 pounds a year in order to keep up with the growing demand. For 2014s Donut Day, they used over 250 pounds of dry mix. To make such a large quantity of donuts to be ready and sold at 7 a.m., the Culinary Arts students and teachers must rise early to start making the delicious treats. Culinary Arts student Belinda Murillo was one of them. I had to wake up at 2 a.m. so I could make it in to school at 4 a.m., she said. However, the hard work pays off, and has proved to be a learning experience for culinary students. [The best thing about do-

nut day is] the students get to come in and be a part of the special day, said Head Culinary Arts teacher Carey Ehly. In addition, the donut sale raises money for the Wendy Fraker Scholarship fund, which

is used to aid seniors with the cost of furthering their culinary education after high school graduation. This year, the Donut Day sale was able to contribute $1,663.38 to the fund. All in all, 3,362 donuts were

sold from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Their flavors included glazed, sugared, pastry cream-filled, cream-filled, chocolate with sprinkles & peanut butter chips, and cinnamon sugar. Donut holes were also sold.

deducted for incorrect answers. The new format to the vocabulary portion of the SAT may calm students depending on how big their vocabulary is and how far it expands. It brings more recent words to memory, thus simplifying the test. Simpler wording is always a good thing for students, especially since SATs are meant for knowledge you already know yourself, instead of what you study for to get your As in English, History, Math, and Science. It could also be harder, though. The mathematics portion in SATs can be very daunting in the test. It may have been awhile since you learned those concepts and since they are expecting less use of the calculator, students may feel even less at ease.

HS is bringing a new SAT for the students to take in 2016. Some say it could be harder, or it could be easier. SATs are what colleges look at; this could be unfair for the ones who already got their final grade. There are a few things that are changing that probably should be recognized for the current freshmen and sophomores who will take this new SAT. According to the Cleburne Times, Beginning in 2016, the exam will focus on using relevant vocabulary words that students will use consistently in college and beyond, the math section will draw from fewer topics, the mandatory essay will be optional and points will not be

The points are getting reduced back to 1600 points. Answers will not be marked off for being wrong in the SATs coming in 2016. Another change in the SAT is adding history and science in to the exam. These subjects will appear in the EvidenceBased Reading and Writing section in which students will have to analyze the material. The change is completely unfair for students who struggled to get into colleges with their poor SAT scores. Students who are able to start taking the new SAT in 2016 are going to be in for a surprise. Theres no way to study, but its known as easier for students to take. But theres no guarantee until the 2016 students take the new and improved SATs and talk to others about how easy or hard it was.

epression is worsening, especially in our generation, and we need to address it now. According to research from the Nuffield Foundation, the experience of teenagers has changed considerably over the last 30-40 years, including a significant increase in anxiety, depression and behavior problems. NBC News examined data between 2000 and 2011, finding that more than 936,000 service members had been diagnosed with at least one mental disorder. Of those

diagnoses, about 85 percent were cases of adjustment disorders, depression, alcohol abuse and anxiety, among other conditions. CHS guidance counselor Emily McDonald feels that communication is a major component of this situation. There are constant breakdowns in families including divorces, then theres a major human disconnection because of students being unsociable with the obsession of technology, said McDonald. Nuffield Foundation also states, Family life for teenagers has also changed. Young people in the 2000s are twice

as likely to have experienced the divorce of their parents than young people 30 years ago. If its not school or family, theres always a reason teenagers find to be depressed. The Nuffield Foundation reports that, The proportion of 15/16 year olds reporting that they frequently feel anxious or depressed has doubled in the last 30 years, from 1 in 30 to 2 in 30 for boys and 1 in ten to 2 in ten for girls. Depression is increasing rapidly and everyone should help so that we can start decreasing these numbers. Society needs to address this so that our generation can have a better outlook on life.

hen the 84th Academy Awards took place on Feb 24, the film Twelve Years a Slave won Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The film was directed and produced by Steven McQueen. This is a significant accomplishment, as he is the first black director to achieve an Oscar for his work. Historically, only five films with black directors have been nominated for Best Picture. While possibly due to the quality of the movies, there has been a long history of whitewashing in mainstream media, a term used more re-

cently to refer to the neglect and suppression of nonwhite people and cultures. There is some controversy over whether or not whitewashing is real in media and pop culture. With a large international market around skin-lightening creams, the gap between hired and accoladed non-white actors to white actors, and even a recent outcry against a Cheerios commercial featuring an interracial family, its hard to deny that there is media bias. The film industry has made headway from times where widespread segregation kept non-white people almost completely out of the industry. Its 2014, so its still shameful that popular media is only just starting to recognize them.

The proof of it is in the movie industry only recently awarding actors and filmmakers, some long overdue for accolades. Such circumstances may have prevented past films, directors, or producers from winning. However, this does not lessen McQueens success, but makes it more significant. His win joins the more recent achievements of others, such as Alfonso Cuarn being the first Latino to win Best Director this year, for his film Gravity. Or Lupita Nyongo being the first African born black actress to win an Academy Award as the Best Supporting Actress by McQueens film. These accolades are important, as they pave the way for more non-white directors and producers to succeed and break down racial barriers.

in many literary communities. Classic literature, such as the older plays and epics, do form a backbone for English syllabi; yet some of this reading gets lost and feels dry, especially due to the outdated language. It is far from a good idea to remove all of these because they are essential to education. However, incorporating newer and more popular books into the syllabi would enhance many students experience in class, and hold the interest of those less willing to read. Recently, Young Adult literature is starting to gain recognition and respect, particularly John Green and Chuck Palahniuk. Their books tend to interest high school readers, while also having literary substance. Being more personally connected to the story will make it better for the reader. In addition, academic consumption of modern and relatable literature could make English class more enjoyable for all students. We want to read...

ark Twain is credited with saying, I have never let my schooling interfere with my education. Similarly, we shouldnt let English class ruin the books we read. With nothing against English teachers, its hard for some of us to enjoy something we must do for a grade. Forcing students to read books lacking modern relevance or interest makes them less open to literature, in and out of school. I do believe certain book types do need to stay in the syllabus, so that students can comprehend poetry and prose, and be able to read works in older or different dialects. However, more modern and popular books should be put in as well, as a redeeming factor for those less willing to read. This is hard to manage though, as newer books have an unfair stigma against them

The reading options of English classes need to change in order to accommodate students interests in reading. Photography:Clara Cozort

Beauty Essentials: Top seven must-have items

ave you ever wondered how you could enhance your look in a few simple ways? Whether or not you wear makeup or prefer to keep it simple, these seven beauty items are a must have for almost any occasion. Moisturizer Moisturizer is an essential that is perfect for just about any weather. After you wash your face be sure to apply moistuirzer so that you are left with a face that looks clean and feels smooth. Moisturizer is perfect for winter when your face gets super dry or in the summer so that it is protected from the sun.

Tweezers This small tool is extremely useful for whenever you want to touch up or shape your eyebrows, unwanted facial hair and splinters. You can purchase a tweezers with cute designs for about $2 at Forever21 or Claires or other stores that sell beauty products.

Bobby Pins Bobby pins are a must-have item because they help tame and pin back unruly hair. You can also use them to create a cute braid, half up and half down look, or a cute pinned-back hairstyle. However, they are hard to keep track, of so buying them in bulk is a very good idea. Mascara This essential is the perfect item for when you are running late. Mascara is usually used to help one look more awake. The eyelash paint helps make your eyelashes stand out and look longer, creating a more dramatic look. Brands such as Cover Girl, Maybelline and LOreal can be found wherever makeup is sold in a variety of different compositions including lengthening, the false lash look, no clump and bold.

Concealer or Foundation This beauty essential is the perfect tool to cover up any of your dark circles caused by sleepless nights. Concealer can also help cover up those pesky blemishes and even out your skin tone. Sophomore Kierra Coutts said, I have to have concealer or foundation, anything to cover up big pimples or [my] uneven skin tone. I cant leave the house without it on. Brands like Cover Girl, Revlon and Neutrogena are great for any skin tone.

A Smile Who said your beauty essentials had to involve makeup? Your smile is something that comes naturally and not to mention, its free! Senior Andrea Readshaw said, Smiling can put you in a better mood and looks good on everyone. Your outfit is never complete without a smile and can be contagious, brightening up someone elses day.

Makeup Wipes Sleeping with your makeup on, can lead to wrinkles and other skin problems later in life. With the use of makeup wipes, you can try to prevent these issues from occurring. Makeup wipes are affordable, convenient and are a simple way to clean off your makeup and refresh your face in the morning or night time. Michaela McQuaig, junior, said, I really like makeup wipes because they are simple.

avoid those cringes and stares. Take patterns for instance, such as plaids, polka dots, stripes and floral. Mixing these patterns can be the trick that sets you apart from all the rest, but it can also be the setup to a fashion catastrophe. Polka dots and stripes can be wonderful patterns to wear, but not together. Many people believe that in order to be different, they must be able to wear outfits that cause heads to turn, but do we want them to turn based on their lack of desire in our outfits? Wearing patterns on opposite sides of the spectrum can clash. The outfit can become cluttered and instead of one main focal point of the outfit, there will be many. In this case, less is more: if we choose at least one outfit should be broken into different colors; instead of pairing a red shirt with red pants and shoes, try pairing it with black bottoms or jeans. This same rule should be applied to denim. Jeans should not be worn from head to toe unless you are wearing a jean jumper, and even that may be questionable. Jean shirts should be paired with solid-colored pants or in this case, patterned bottoms will be acceptable. It is important that we are informed on what certain styles flatter us and what does not. Appropriately matching is key when it comes to certain clothing that we wear. If we dont know what to pair together, we can create a fashion meltdown. Pair your clothing together responsibly and in an organized fashion so you wont be the one who is negatively turning heads.

inter has had a good run but now it is time for a breath of fresh air. Spring is quickly approaching and with the changing seasons come changing wardrobes. Its important to know when to wear certain articles of clothing. You dont want to freeze, but you dont want to wear a bulky sweater that keeps in all the heat. You need to find the right happy medium. Finding that medium may just start with a fashionable top that will help with the transition into the new season. Cotton cardigans are wonderful

tops to wear in the spring. This lightweight top with buttons makes it easy to wear so that you stay warm opposed to hot. The thin cardigan makes it proper for wearing your summer tank tops without sacrificing freezing your arms off. Cardigans can be found at any clothing store, from Body Central to Charlotte Russe for prices between $10 to $40. Not only do you need an appropriate top to wear for the slightly warmer season, but you need some fun bottoms as well. Jeans got you blue? In order to break away from the tiresome feeling, we need to bring out bottoms that will leave a more spring-like colorful impact. Lighter colors such as

baby blues, baby pinks and yellows are what we need in order to complement the new spring season. Stores such as Target and Kohls hold bottoms that follow the lighter colored fashions for $20 to $40. Just remember: it is okay to reconnect with your former summer clothing, but overdoing it is not beneficial. Breaking out of the summer clothes in spring is like jumping into a pool without seeing if the waters cold. You might be fine but you will freeze. Wearing layers and spring clothing lets you adjust to the warming temperatures and looking fashionable without turning blue.

Fashion Advice: Tips and tricks to follow year round

with detailed instructions and tips and fashion advice for you to spice up your everyday style. You can find tutorials on pretty much all of your fashion needs. Makeup, hair and DIY (Do It Yourself ) fashion and beauty essential tutorials are some of the easiest ways to learn new techniques in a short period of time. In just a few clicks or swipes of the finger you can add a new hairstyle, headband or makeup technique to your daily outfit. Accessorize in bright colors If you dress in a lot of neutral colors and want to add flair to your outfit, add jewelry, purses, headbands or shoes in bright colors. These simple and versatile accessories will add a pop of color to your outfit and could catch the eyes of friends or even strangers in a positive way. Taking into consideration these simple fashion tips, you can expand your style and help yourself feel in a lot of ways, more comfortable in your own body with just a little bit of effort.

owadays, making a fashion statement is a challenging feat that everyone tries to accomplish. However, sometimes people find themselves in a fashion dilemma. Following these seven simple and helpful tips can benefit anyone willing and wanting to improve their style. Complement your figure When getting dressed, you want to wear clothes that fit appropriately to your body type and compliment you. No one wants to wear clothes that are too tight or too baggy. Wear clothes that you can dress up or dress down and that you can tolerate wearing throughout the entire day. Dont be afraid to take risks Dont be afraid to go for looks that you have never tried before. Sometimes picking an outfit off the racks that you believe wont look good on you may turn out to be an outfit you love. Try the wacky patterned dress you saw on the rack or that hairstyle you saw in the magazine. You only live once and taking a risk wont hurt. Wear the right colors Try not to wear clothes in colors that will wash out your complexion. It is best to wear clothes that compliment your skin tone and dont clash with your hair or makeup. You also want to try and stay away from wearing all one solid color.
Having a variety of shoes is helpful when you are trying to complete your outt for the day. Photography: Bri Hendriksen

This will prevent you from looking washed out and will compliment your body and over all appearance. (Want more advice on colors and patterns? Read our article Clash of the patterns: Three looks to avoid.) Define your personal style Dont be afraid of wearing the clothes that you want to wear. It is your body and you should feel comfortable enough to wear the style you see on your favorite celebrities, on your Tumblr timeline or what would feel most comfortable to you. It is up to what style you want to showcase and what appeals to your taste just as long as you rock it. Build a solid wardrobe Coming home with bags full of new clothes is one of the best feelings in the world. When you are able to go to school flaunting a new outfit that you just bought, it feels like you are destined to have a good day. When possible,

go to some of your favorite stores and purchase clothes that can fill your closet. Spring is near and new summer dresses and shirts are arriving in stores around the world. Put together outfits that are appropriate for not only the occasion but the weather As the seasons change, sometimes it is hard to adjust to the temperatures and the styles. During the winter, it is best to wear sweaters and boots while in the summer you can wear shorts, tanks and flip flops. Wearing a short-sleeved shirt is an option in the winter as well as long as you pair it with a cute jacket or a cardigan. The same goes for dresses and skirts in the winter and jeans in the summer. They are universal pieces of clothing for just about any season as long you know how to wear them. You can never have too many pairs of shoes With shoes such as Vans,

Toms, Uggs, combat boots, flats, heels and Converse, no amount of shoes is ever too much. Purchasing shoes in a bunch of different colors that go with just about any kind of outfit is the best choice. It is best to give yourself options so that you can switch it up from day to day. Modern Warfare 2, which helped to further solidify their dominance as the premier FPS developer. Now, nearly five years later, with a new company and a new franchise, they come into the new generation of gaming swinging. Welcome to Titanfall. Exclusive to the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC platforms, Titanfall is a new kind of first-person shooter. A far cry from the ultrarealistic military shooters, Titanfall features parkour, giant robots, gigantic swords, and even a few dinosaurs; its a game designed for the kid in all of us, but its still mature enough to speak to us as adults. Another thing about the game thats different than others is that its completely multiplayer. There is no single-player campaign, and the story is woven in between the multiplayer matches themselves. It may seem silly, but actually ends up working out in the games favor because the developers could spend so much time polishing the multiplayer mechanics of the game. Namely, the Titans themselves. Titans, the giant mechs in the game, are not simply there for set pieces. The mechs are a vital part of the battlefield. Everybody in the game gets them, and everyone needs to use them in order to win. The Titans are huge and deal lots of damage. Rushing towards one as a Pilot (the foot soldiers you play as in the game) will almost always end badly. Good thing for Pilots is that theyre fast. Really fast. With the power of their jump kit, they can run on walls, doublejump up buildings, and climb on top of Titans. The battle between the the Pilots speed and the Titans strength makes for some awesome moments, and never feels unbalanced. Another new feature being used in Titanfall is the use of the cloud. Instead of running their own servers, Respawn is using Microsofts Azure server network. The Azure network is a massive network of servers that Xbox developers can use for their games. The benefit of Azure is that Titanfall has completely dedicated servers, which makes for smooth connections between other players. I experienced no lag while playing and the gameplay was buttery smooth. Titanfall is a Titan of a game (pun intended) and everyone should play it. If it has one fault, it is that it actually makes other first-person shooters are no longer as fun to play. If you dont have an Xbox, Titanfall may just make you get one. And if you already have one? Youre in for a wild ride.

here arent many game developers that can say that they defined a genre with their game. Even fewer can say they did it twice. The developers at Respawn Entertainment may have just done that. Respawn Entertainment, made up of the key developers of Infinity Ward (creators of Call of Duty), redefined the first-person shooter genre with 2007s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, a game that introduced the killstreak and perk system, now staples of the genre. They followed it up with

t seems the recent explosion of genres and artists has left many casual listeners out of the loop. The market is certainly crowded (not to mention diluted with plenty of noise), but all hope is not lost. Thankfully, there are plenty of blogs and websites accompanying all of the new genres, allowing budding audiophiles to discover new music with ease. Two of the best, yaqui. co and thissongissick.com, have been around for a while, but have truly come into their own in recent years. Yaqui is an ultra-minimalist blog that focuses exclusively on sharing some of the best emerg-

ing artists from around the world, primarily those in the world of electronica and underground house. Posts are frequent and often contain playlists of 1015 songs, meaning youll always have something new to explore. Better yet, since much of the featured music is recorded or produced by up and coming artists, most it can be downloaded for free. Thissongissick shares the same general theme as Yaqui, although the posts tend to focus more on dance and rap music. Now in its fourth year on the web, the Colorado-based blog has reached an unprece! dented level of influence in the music world, helping to launch the careers of EDM greats such as Martin Garrix and Skrillex. Like Yaqui, most of the music is available as a free download, and nearly 300 pages of content ensures youll never go without some good tunes. With the ability to get people dancing, fighting, crying or laughing, there isnt much music cant do. With the rise of the internet age, music is always available to us. Of course, music wont finish your homework for you or do the dishes, but what does it matter when there are beats this sick to listen to.

.J. Novak is a jack of all trades: he is an actor, comedian, screenwriter, director, and now, an author. Released on February 4, 2014, Novaks debut fiction collection features over 50 stories, and there is certainly something for everyone; his humor pieces are exceptional, and when sad, they hit hard. Arguably, one of the saddest vignettes in the collection is Missed Connection: Grocery spill at 21st and 6th 2:30pm on Wednesday, wherein Novak mocks a Craigslist Missed Connection page. The story is about a woman who meets a man at a grocery store and develops a special connection with him, but it is short-lived. Shortly after they meet, he abandons her. I know this sounds crazy to say after one encounter but I kind of fell for you pretty hard & it has been forever since Ive connected to anyone like this & my heart is kind of broken in a million pieces, the woman narrates in the vignette. Novaks biggest strength is his voice; in each story, it profoundly differs yet simple connections bind all of his stories together. His characters speak so powerfully that they almost seem as if they are real. Another particular favorite is Rithmetic, which is about a principal of an el-

ementary school, who decides to abolish any higher learning of mathematics courses. While this would never happen in real life, it is an exceptional humoristic piece. [The principal] put his Sharpie at the beginning of the word [...] I think the problem, he said, squeaking a line through it, is Rithmetic, Novak writes. The New York Times acknowledged that Novaks role as Ryan on The Office influenced many of his stories, stating that [The vignettes] have similar formulas for most of the sketches. In spite of this, each story

is a breath of fresh air, and while they all vary, there is something for everyone. Thats not to say that Novaks debut is perfect. A weak point to One More Thing is Novaks one-page vignettes; they lack depth and are too vague. For example, Maries Stupid Boyfriend is only four sentences long and is written choppily. However, the best part of One More Thing is that it is a light read, but there is so much substance. It is an enjoyable read and Novaks mere dedication to the reader makes his debut even more personal.

hey say that everyone is in charge of their own destiny. What if 80,000 people were in charge of it all at the same time? Thats the question that Twitch Plays Pokemon asks. A social experiment of sorts, TPP is a live video stream of games on twitch. tv in the Pokemon video game franchise. People playing Pokemon in a live stream is nothing new. In fact, you can usually find dozens of people streaming their playthroughs of the game online. What makes TPP different is that instead of one person playing, any comment in the comment section of the stream is turned into a command for the game. If somebody types up, the character goes up in the game. This wouldnt be a problem with only a few people typing commands. (Un)lucky for TPP, nearly 80,000 people are playing at the same time. This leads to having to spend hours at a

time trying to do simple tasks. To cut down a tree in a normal game of Pokemon usually takes about 2 minutes. With TPP, it took close to 8 hours. The stream may seem like a futile effort. How could 80,000 people possibly beat the game like this? Well, after nearly 17 days straight of playing the game, the stream managed to beat the entire game. In that time, the stream managed to set up an entire religion, a pseudo-government, and even managed to catch one of the most difficult to catch Pokemon in the game. Many ask, Whats the appeal? The truth is, nobody really knows. Thousands of people working towards a common goal is an appealing factor, but in truth, it probably boils down to it just being cool. Nothing like this has ever been done before, or probably will be done like this ever again. Just like the stream managed to catch a Zaptos in a master ball, it also caught lightning in a bottle, which might be an even bigger feat than beating the game.

he annual March Madness tournament tipped off on March 18-19. The first round was played in Dayton: Albany v. Mount Saint Marys, North Carolina State vs. Xavier, Cal Poly vs. Texas So., and Iowa vs. Tennessee. The bracket consists of four regions, South, East, West, and Midwest. The 64 teams who play in this tournament were decided on Sunday March 16. The tournament will last three weeks with the Final Four on Saturday April 5 and the Championship game on Tuesday April 7. There is always a Cinderella team, last year being Dunk City Florida Gulf Coast, the first team ranked 16 to make it as far as the Elite 8. They became well-known because of the dunks they did. Warren Buffett, chairman

and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, said he would give $1 billion to the person who has a perfect bracket; however, this possibility has already been eliminated with the losses of teams like Duke and Syracuse. Senior Matt Richards picks his bracket by looking at the teams who are coming in hot. He said, [You have to] look our for the teams that always perform well in the tournament like Michigan State and UCONN. According to the website Businessinsider.com, the chances to have a perfect bracket is 1 in 9,223,372,036,854,775,808. Here is a look back at a few games from the second and third rounds: Dayton vs. Ohio State: Dayton Flyers pulled an upset over Ohio State 60-57. Daytons Vee Sanford secured the win with a layout with 3.8 seconds left. Ohio States Aaron Craft had a chance for a buzzer beater to win the game but

his shot did not fall. Dayton moved on to play Syracuse in the third round South Regional. Harvard vs. Cincinnati: Harvard upset Cincinnati 61-57 in the East Regional second round. This was Harvards first time in the NCAA Tournament since 1946. Harvard proceeded to the next round against Michigan State. Iowa State vs. North Carolina: Iowa State upset North Carolina, 85-83, with the winning basket at three seconds remaining. North Carolina attempted to dribble the ball up court to call a timeout, but the referees determined that the time had expired due to a delay in starting the clock, ending their chance to advance. Wichita State vs. Kentucky: Wichita States perfect season came to a heartbreaking end in the third round of play for the Midwest Regional as they missed a three pointer and fell to Kentucky, 78-76.

n only his third regulation triple jump of the season, CHS junior Isa Paschall lept over his competitors to take fourth place in the event in the Indoor Track State Championship. In the meet on March 1 at Penn State, Paschall also competed in the long jump, placing seventh in the state. I was happy but not satisfied, said Paschall of his finishes. He could have placed second in the triple jump if he had not fouled during parts of the competition. Even if I would have been second, [I am] still not satisfied until I win, said Paschall. He hopes to qualify for the outdoor track state championship in a few different

events and leave the school year as a state champion in at least the triple jump. Head Coach Ed Boardman hopes for the same. I expect him to place even higher at the outdoor state championship, he said. During the entire indoor season, Paschall worked on getting faster with the sprint coach rather than practicing his jumping. Even as a junior, he is one of the top jumpers in Pennsylvania and is hitting top 50 marks nationally, said Boardman. Sophomore Alexis Lebo said, Hes a great role model, athlete, teacher, and teammate! Hes taught me so much about jumping. Paschall will be competing in the Tim Cook Invitational on Saturday, March 22 to start off his spring season.

Will changes in Major League Baseball make for a good 2014 season?

ajor League Baseball is set to hold its Opening Day series, signifying the start of the 2014 season. Many things have changed this past offseason, from big names changing teams to new rules and even new technologies that will be used to help the game. Starting with some big names who have changed teams, former Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano signed a ten year, $240 million dollar deal with the Seattle Mariners. Hunter Pence cashed in with a five year, $90 million dollar deal to play outfield for the Gi-

ants. Curtis Granderson signed a four year deal with the Mets. The MLB Players Association was set out to change the ruling on collisions at home plate. Before it changed this offseason, there was no rule on collisions and many catchers were getting injured because of players crashing into them trying to break up a play at the plate. Just as recently as 2012, Giants catcher Buster Posey was knocked out for most of the season with a horrific ankle injury caused in a collision at the plate. Now, the rule states that a runner cannot leave the direct path of the baseline in order to initiate contact, and can also be called out by an umpire if the umpire rules the collision unnecessary. Instant replay has been cir-

cling around the rumor mill in the MLB for years. Some said it would take the umpire almost completely out of any controversial call. Some believed it was the best thing that could happen to baseball. For the past few seasons, managers were allowed one challenge of any ball that was deemed a home run that they believed was not and vice versa. Starting this spring training, managers were allowed one challenge on almost any call they thought was wrong, and if they got it right, they were awarded one more challenge in the game. The MLB has implemented a central headquarters so when a manager uses a challenge, the umpires can contact the head-

quarters and get the right call. Overall, this offseason has been a very busy one for the whole league, and many are

excited for the start of the new season, which will end after crowning a champion in the World Series beginning Oct 22.
