The Shop Teacher notes 1 Educators, please forgive use of the term "regular teachers.

" It may seem snide or demeaning, but not so. For lack of better command of the English language, I use the term to differentiate between teachers of materials manipulation skills directly related to employment out of secondary education as opposed to teaching intellectual and informational skills directly related to university entrance out of secondary education. Being myself an artifact of both manners of teaching and learning, no disrespect is intended, though the differing methods produce an entirely different "product." 2 The Shop Teacher too was captive to the "intellectual clique" framework as described by Christensen, Horn, Johnson, Disrupting Class, pp. 36-38, and this clique became outcast in the secondary school swiveling the azimuth and trajectory of instruction to university prep and digital connectivity. 3 Hirsch, Jerry, Ford's 3-cylinder may kick off a trend, Los Angeles Times, 11/27/12, P. B1 4 Surface Grinder: A stationary equipment machine tool with a moving electro-magnetic table above which a spinning abrasive wheel can precisely grind flat surfaces in thousandth-inch increments. Biscuit Joiner: A hand or bench-mounted tool that precisely cuts grooves in wood into which is glued a flat wood plate to hold together wide sections of similar or dissimilar wood for making wide surfaces like tables or other furniture. You can't see them, but if you own a wood dining-room table of any quality, are willing to bash it in pieces, you will see how these "biscuits" hold (held) it together. 5 A-G: See the chapter ........ on page....... for an explanation of high school exit requirements/ university entrance qualifications. 6 One of the schools in our district lost two "custodians" due to repeated theft, nailed to the wall by other staff members fed up with losing expensive technical gear. 7 For example, in the use of high or low-carbon steels, carbon is transferred via atmospheric properties and deposited on or removed

from the materials in question. Ceramic materials transfer via heat from one state to another through sintering or vitrification, becoming different materials altogether as a result. 8 Q&A with Arthur Levine, The New York Times Education LIfe, 11/4/12, p.6 9 Pierce, Dennis, Zhao: U.S. schools focusing on the wrong skills, eSchool News, September, 2013 10 Christenson, Horn Johnson, Disrupting Class, p. 111 11 Americans with Disabilities Act: ada.gov/2010_regs.htm Accessed 1/9/14, Original dates to 1990 12 A few years ago I walked onto a construction site where our school district was building a new middle school to check progress on the technology/shop classroom. I had on my steel-toe shoes, my hard hat, safety glasses, neon day-glo vest, but when the supervisor came up to lead me around he took one look at the cuffs on my too-long trousers and said "you'll get 'em caught on some rebar; fold 'em down." 13 An all-male college's future, Los Angeles Times editorial, 52512, p.A22 14 Azzam, Khaled, edited by, Arts & Crafts of the Islamic Lands, Principles, Materials, Practice, Thames & Hudson, London, 2013, p.145 15 Fred Jones, Tools for Teaching, 2000, Fredric H. Thats a lesson well-learned by 17 members of Lincoln High Schools after-school STEM Club who spent six weeks creating software applications for electronic devices. By Debbie Cafazzo; May 10, 2013 Five employees of Concur, currently based in Redmond but moving soon to Bellevue, volunteered to mentor the Lincoln students as they learned to apply the lessons of STEM science, technology, engineering and math to a real-world challenge. ...The STEM Club at Lincoln is the creation of biology teacher and club adviser Lee Ann Love. To launch the club, she applied for and won a grant from Washington STEM, a statewide nonprofit that promotes STEM education. Last year, the club worked with Northwest construction firm Lease Crutcher Lewis on the mathematics involved in pouring concrete, and this year students worked on the app project. They have also worked on science projects with the University of Washington Tacoma. 20 Daveney, Laura, Schools adapting to new focus on engineering; Engineering's place in science standards leaves room for teacher education, experts say, eSchool News, 10/13 p. 42 And another sideshow: the use of the term "engineering" in this context exposes a disconnect in the understanding of of the term. It has come to mean what educators understand to be "hands-on" skills when in the world of work the term has a narrower, specialized focus. It's more pleasing to the ear and eye than the terms vocational, mechanical.

We don't know exactly why. My theory is that Wikipedia editing is a minority taste, and some of the constellation of characteristics that combine to create a Wikipedian--geeky, tech-centric, intellectually confident, thickskinned and argumentative, with the willingness and ability to indulge in a solitary hobby--tend to skew male.
