I have included listening assignments to be studied in conjunction with the various theoretical concepts under examination. There will be two major examinations given: the mid-term and a final. Also, you will receive homework assignments on a weekly basis. You will be responsible for doing two (2) transcriptions. One transcription will be a graded class presentation. The class presentation will consist of an analysis of a standard jazz, funk, Latin or gospel composition or an improvised jazz solo. The student should prepare a structured analysis of the piece and be able to discuss various theoretical devices of the solo or composition. Such devices would be the use of scales, chords or chord substitutions, rhythmic and melodic patterns, modulations rhythmic alterations, etc. Each student will have a maximum of fifteen minutes to present to the class. Reading The required texts listed below are the only books that are a mandatory purchase for the class. The other books listed in suggested reading can be found in the bookstore and in the music library on reserve for this class or in the circulation shelves. Handouts The handouts that are done by me will be received in class or on TRUNK for Music 104Jazz Theory. Please get a binder, and keep them all together in a chronological order. Eventually these handouts will serve as a book on Jazz Theory. Attendance Attendance is a major part of your grade. Class participation is encouraged and necessary to achieve success in this subject. If you miss class, text or email the instructor. The

student is responsible for all listening which is done in class. Additional listening will be identified on TRUNK If you did not email, call or text the instructor, please do not expect a one on one review session. IMPORTANT DATES 1.March 6 -The MID-TERM. 2. March 13- First Transcriptions are Due. 3.APRIL 10, 12 and 17 Second Transcriptions Due- CLASS PRESENTATIONS. 4.April 17 and 19 Review for the Final 5.April 24 and 26 guest lecturers. 6.Friday, May 4 at 12-2pm - Jazz Theory Final. As we draw closer to the end of the semester, this date FOR THE FINAL should not be a surprise to any of us. Neither texting nor emailing during class is permitted. If I see that you have violated this request, I will unashamedly ask you to leave.

Listening One of the major aims of this course is to heighten ones musical awareness through listening. Recognition of jazz repertoire should be taken seriously. The repertoire from class and the listening list will be included on both major examinations.
