Applications are invited for a probationary (tenure-track) appointment for an Associate NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Industrial Wastewater Management and Resource Recovery at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Based on qualifications and experience, consideration may be given to a tenured Associate Professor appointment. The position will be effective September 1st, 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter. Western Engineering, Western University in collaboration with GreenField Ethanol as the industrial partner, seeks a candidate who is able to build a vision-directed, innovative and interdisciplinary approach to industrial wastewater management challenges. The research program, to be developed in collaboration with the industrial partner, should be in the area of industrial wastewater treatment and management, including reuse, recycling, and nutrient and energy recovery from ethanol industrial streams. Experience in anaerobic digestion processes for the production of biohydrogen and biomethane is an asset. Situated in picturesque London, Ontario, a city with a population of approximately 348,000 along the banks of the Thames River, Western University is a prominent academic institution routinely ranked as a top research-intensive university in Canada, having a commitment to excel as an internationally leading research institution. The Environmental Engineering Group in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Western has an international reputation for excellence in water systems, including water and wastewater treatment, nanotechnology, groundwater contamination, subsurface remediation, and water solutions for less developed communities. In addition, Western hosts the London node of the Southern Ontario Water Consortium (http://sowc.ca/), a public-private collaboration on the development of large-scale, advanced water technologies. The International Water Excellence Centre will be a globally unique facility providing access to a municipal wastewater treatment plant for full-scale development and testing of new technologies related to wastewater treatment, nutrient recovery and energy production from municipal waste. To be located at the Greenway Pollution Control Plant in London, this facility represents a $5.6 million dollar investment by FedDev Ontario in equipment to enable and accelerate the commercialization of promising new wastewater treatment technologies. Within Western and the broader academic community, the successful candidate will find opportunities, such as those at the Center for Environment and Sustainability (www.uwo.ca/enviro/index.htm), to create new collaborative ventures with other colleagues, to tackle a broad suite of wastewater-related challenges including sustainable technology and business models, toxicology, epidemiology, sociology, environmental law and others. The successful candidate will also find GreenField Ethanol to be a very supportive industrial collaborator with which to discuss and prioritize ideas, evolve targeted programs, prepare funding applications to external agencies, share research facilities, and enrich the training of students and postdoctoral fellows. We seek an energetic and dynamic candidate with a commitment to excellence who will be able to contribute to both teaching and research efforts of our Department. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering (or a related engineering field) and will have demonstrated outstanding research potential and an independent publication record. Industrial experience is an asset. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain an ongoing vigorous research program, collaborate with faculty within the

Department and across Western University, attract external research funding, supervise graduate students, teach core undergraduate and graduate courses in Civil and Environmental Engineering (www.eng.uwo.ca/civil/undergraduate_program/prospective_undergrad.htm) and participate in other educational and professional activities. The candidate will be expected to participate in the administrative activities of the Department, Faculty and University. Eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario is required for this appointment, and registration will be one of the necessary requirements prior to conferral of tenure. The appointment is contingent upon the successful award from the NSERC Associate Industrial Chair program (www.nserccrsng.gc.ca/Professors-Professeurs/CFS-PCP/IRC-PCI_eng.asp). The criteria for that program includes: proposal must be in an area of high priority for both the university and the industrial partner, and candidates must have (a) demonstrated exceptional promise relative to their peers in their field of research, (b) demonstrated the capacity to conduct a significant independent research activity, (c) a significant publication and Highly Qualified Personnel training record, and (d) the ability to interact with industry and nurture partnerships.
