CIMO Scholarships
The Centre for International Mobility CIMO awards
and administers scholarships for students and researchers.
CIMO does not have any scholarship programmes or other
nancial assistance available for degree studies at bachelors
or masters level in Finland; scholarships are mainly intended
for postgraduate students who have completed a masters
degree.
Through its scholarship programmes, CIMO supports the
internationalisation of teaching and research by forging links
and encouraging academic mobility between institutions of
higher education in Finland and abroad.
Scholarships are available for applicants from all countries.
Each CIMO scholarship programme has its own eligibility
criteria, application procedures and deadlines. A scholarship
normally consists of a monthly allowance intended to cover
living expenses in Finland for a single person. The amount of
a scholarship varies according to the scholarship programme
and academic qualication of the applicant. No additional
expenses such as travel, housing, or insurance are covered
by a scholarship.

I Scholarships
for masters studies
Finnish studies and research: scholarships for advanced
studies of the Finnish language at Finnish universities
CIMO awards scholarships to students of Finnish language
and culture at universities outside Finland for advanced mas-
ters studies in Finnish universities or for collecting material in
Finland for their masters thesis in their home university. The
scholarship is intended for a maximum of one term.
How to apply:
Students apply directly to CIMO. Application deadlines are
on 30th April for the autumn term, and on 31st October for
the spring term. The applicant must establish contact with
the host university before applying. The application should
preferably be made in Finnish and must include a CV, a sum-
mary of studies completed, a study/research plan, a reference
from the Finnish teacher, with assessment of the Finnish lan-
guage skills of the applicant, and an acceptance letter from
the host university.

Scholarships provided by higher education institutions
Finnish universities and universities of applied sciences (also
known as polytechnics) may collect tuition fees from non-
EU/EEA students enrolled in some selected masters degree
programmes. There are special scholarships available for stu-
dents on these programmes provided by the institution in
question. Some Finnish higher education institutions may
offer a small number of scholarships or grants for interna-
tional students and researchers, although this is relatively
rare. You should check the possibility of any such nancial
aid directly with the institution you are interested in.

II Scholarships

studies and research
CIMO awards scholarships for postgraduate students
and young researchers who have completed a masters or
a doctoral degree.
CIMO has a number of scholarship programmes for doctoral
studies and research at Finnish universities. They are targeted
at all academic elds, with the exception of the scholarships
for advanced degree students of the Finnish language, which
are specic to that particular eld.
There are two types of scholarships: individual scholarships
which young researchers apply for themselves, and host fel-
lowships which are applied for by the relevant department
of the Finnish higher education institution wishing to host
researchers and postgraduates.
CIMO Fellowships
The CIMO Fellowships programme is open to young
researchers from all countries and from all academic elds.
The scholarship period may vary from 3 to 12 months. The
scholarships cannot be applied for post-doctoral studies.
How to apply:

directly; rather, it is his or her responsibility to establish con-
tact with the Finnish host university. The relevant department
of the host university in turn applies to CIMO for the grant.

last from one to two academic years and include studies in
at least two countries. Studies lead to an ofcially recognised
double, joint or multiple degree. Generous scholarships
covering the whole degree study period are available both
to European and non-European students and scholars.
Erasmus Mundus is funded by the European Commission.
Finnish universities are currently involved in the delivery of

a scholarship scheme.
Alternatively, students, staff and scholars from targeted
countries around the world even professionals working
outside the Academia may apply for a scholarship under a
