World Press Photo in Maputo

The travelling exhibition, unique in its kind, is the result of a worldwide annual contest on press
photography and is brought to Maputo with the support of Banco Terra.

And the Netherlands Embassy in Mozambique. The exhibition will be officially opened by Mr. Maarten
Susan, Director General of Banco Terra and Mr. Frans Bijvoet, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the
Netherlands in Mozambique.

Each year an independent international jury, consisting of thirteen members, judges the entries in ten
different categories, submitted by photojournalists, agencies, newspapers and magazines from all
corners of the world. This year’s competition attracted 5,019 photographers from 125 countries. In total
80,536 images were entered in the contest.

The annual exhibition is shown each year at about 100 venues in 40 countries all over the world. This
year’s exhibition contains 185 photographs. It is an annual public showcase for photojournalism
comprising of the year’s winning photo, together with award winning images from each of the ten
categories. The high quality of photojournalism involved is considered to set a standard in the field. As a
visual record of the previous year’s events, the exhibition has popular appeal and attracts a significantly
wider range of visitors than traditional art and photography exhibitions.

World Press Photo is an independent, non-profit organisation. Its offices are in Amsterdam, where
World Press Photo was founded in 1955. Its main aim is to support and promote internationally the
work of professional press photographers. Over the years, World Press Photo has evolved into an
independent platform for photojournalism and the free exchange of information.

In order to realize its objectives, World Press Photo organizes the world’s largest and most prestigious
annual press photography contest. Educational projects play an important role in World Press Photo’s
activities. Seminars and workshops open to individual photographers, photo agencies and picture
editors are organised in developing countries. The annual Joop Swart Masterclass, held in the
Netherlands, is aimed at talented photographers at the start of their careers. They receive practical
instruction and professional advice from leaders in the profession.

World Press Photo receives support from the Dutch Postcode Lottery and is sponsored worldwide by
Canon and TNT. The World Press Photo exhibition in Mozambique is sponsored by Banco Terra and the
Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and with the support of AGS Frasers Moçambique, Canon
Pro Data, a Associação Moçambicana de Fotografia and Catucha Trading.
