PRODUCED AND DELIVERED AT NO COST TO THE TAXPAYER

Protecting our parks We have achieved so much togetherjust think what we can do over the coming years.
Your local Conservative Action Team has been working hard for the last four years to make sure that Tower Hamlets Council takes notice of the issues that matter in Canary Wharf.
From helping residents affected by noise nuisances and getting new street signs installed, to tackling antisocial behaviour on our streets, your local Canary Wharf Conservative Action Team have been busy across our local area. Your local Conservative Councillors and Action Team run weekly advice surgeries which have been very popular with local residents. They have helped local people on issues as diverse as housing, crime and anti -social behaviour, funding for local community groups, school places and missed rubbish collections. Andrew Wood says Across the Isle of Dogs, we have a very strong community spirit and with major new housing developments planned locally, it is important that Tower Hamlets Council invests properly in local services and infrastructure. We must ensure that schools, doctors surgeries and public transport can keep pace with the extra demands placed upon them. We must not allow our area to become overdeveloped. With your help we can achieve much more over the next four years. Tower Hamlets Conservatives have announced their parks and local heritage plan, which puts local residents first. While the Council seeks to cash in with commercial events in Millwall Park and Victoria Park, we believe that parks should always be available to local people and sports groups. Park users should not have to be constantly on guard for rubbish and broken glass from beer festivals or concerts.

Securing investment in our green spaces

Your local Canary Wharf Conservatives are calling for the Council to invest properly in our parks. There are too few litter wardens, while dog wardens are scarcely seen despite rising volumes of dog mess in our parks. Action Team member Ahmed Hussain, Hussain who is a regular park user, says The Councils ruling administration are unable to provide any real details on what they have done for our parks. By contrast, your local Conservatives have fought for improvement works to Sir John McDougal Gardens and have supported the Friends of Island Gardens.

Introducing Your Local Conservative Action Team

Your Conservative Action Team is made up of local people who want to fight for our local area. Ahmed and Andrew both live locally, and work closely with Cllr Zara Davis and Cllr David Snowdon. Ahmed Hussain lives on the Barkantine Estate with his wife and children. He is an experienced community campaigner and former Conservative Councillor. As a father of school age children, Ahmed is passionate about fighting for improved local schools and better youth provision. He has a strong interest in local community health issues and works for the NHS. Andrew Wood is a resident of Westferry Road who used to work for the London Olympics. He has been a school governor for the last five years and is now trying to set up a free school in Tower Hamlets. Andrew is also active as a volunteer in the NHS as Chairman of the Patient Panel at a major East London hospital. He has also been heavily involved in campaigns to protect our local parks and green spaces.

things that we have achieved together

Better Services and Streets

Following pressure from Cllr Zara Davis, Tower Hamlets Council took action to stop the Tunnel Runs at Westferry Circus. Hundreds of cars had been gathering to engage in high speed races. Faster internet connections are available in our local area as a result of the hard work done by Cllr Zara Davis to convince BT to improve their local infrastructure. After meetings with BT managers they agreed to bring forward plans to roll out fibre-optic broadband.

Your local Conservative Action Team has been fighting for a better deal for One Housing residents across the Isle of Dogs on service charge bills. Charges have all too often proven excessive and your Action Team has helped to fight them.

Cllr Zara Davis has arranged for One Housing Group to install new street signs on the western side of Alpha Grove. The current signs has proven to be insufficient to deal with the street layout of the Estate.

Fighting For The Environment

The Council are currently measuring noise levels and are looking at whether the DLR should be forced to install noise barriers.

After the installation of new parking spaces on the corner of Westferry Road and Strafford Street significantly reduced visibility for drivers, Cllr Zara Davis and your local Action team set up a series of meetings between local residents and the Council.

Re-opening The Thames Path

Following pressure from Cllr David Snowdon and the Action Team, the Council has agreed to re-open the Thames Path near Sir John McDougal Gardens which has been closed for months.

Since Tower Hamlets Council imposed a 15 charge for bulk waste collection, dumping of furniture has soared. Your local Conservative Action Team ensures the Council picks up any dumped bulk waste. Your Conservative Action Team works hard to make our local area greener. From participating in charity-led planting session to arranging for Tower Hamlets Council to plant thousand of additional bulbs this year, our area will look better than ever next year.

Better Local Housing

Fighting Over-Development

Plans to build a mosque on the Grade II listed Island Gardens Park were dropped following a public campaign supported by the local Conservative Action Team. Cllr David Snowdon ensured that the Council officers were properly implementing planning rules. Your local Conservatives convinced Tower Hamlets Council to reinstall the world famous Traffic Light Tree on the Isle of Dogs. It was rescued from storage following its removal from Westferry Road and it has been installed near Canary Wharf.

Your local Conservative Action Team fought against developer plans to demolish the last remaining petrol station on the Isle of Dogs. Andrew Wood said How can the Council believe that removing such a vital local service is a good idea? Developers planning to build new penthouse apartments on top of Ability Place saw their plans rejected by Tower Hamlets planning committee after Cllr Zara Davis and local residents spoke out against the disruptive plans.

Cubitt Town Library Saved

Following signs that Tower Hamlets Council were preparing to close the much loved Cubitt Town Library, Leader of the Conservative Group Cllr Golds forced the Council to guarantee its future.

Andrew Wood and the local Action Team have fought hard to stop overdevelopment on Westferry Road unless sufficient new transport links, doctors surgeries and schools are built. The Council needs to invest more in local services, says Andrew.

Your local Conservatives oppose Tower Hamlets Councils plans to commercialise our local parks such as Millwall Park, St John's Park and Island Gardens, by letting them out for events such as parties and beer festivals. Ahmed Hussain says "Using our parks as a cash cow will mean a repeat of the problems with drunken anti-social behaviour at Victoria Park. Your Conservative Councillors have so far forced the Council to cut the number of planned events and, working with local residents, we are pushing for an end to commercial events.

Its Time To Improve Our Local Roads

Your local Conservative Action team has been working hard to get action on the often appalling state of our local roads. Your local Action team frequently reports potholes to the Council, and ensures that the damage is swiftly repaired. However, the Council is not taking the

FIGHTING OVERDEVELOPMENT
Tower Hamlets Council is planning to build a whopping 43,170 new properties in Tower Hamlets by 2025, according to its Core Strategy document. Even more incredibly, 40% of the properties they are planning to build will be located on the Isle of Dogs. The Council simply cannot allow development at this break-neck speed without investing in schools, doctors surgeries and public transport infrastructure, says local Action Team member Andrew Wood. But Tower Hamlets Council is simply not doing enough. It is not driving a hard enough bargain with developers who charge ever higher prices for flats, but deliver little in the way of benefits to the existing community here on the Isle of Dogs. To make matters worse, Mayor Lutfur Rahman is squandering money available for investment on vanity projects. Every year he wastes 3.2 million a year on Communications, including his own newspaper, while squandering 500,000 a year on mayoral advisors, who replicate jobs done elsewhere in the council. With the Council paying so little attention to future community needs, even its own optimistic forecasters are forced to admit that over the next decade there will be 14,000 more children living in the Borough. Based on current investment plans, school places will be nearly 20% over-subscribed by then. Already, the Council is spending 1 million a year bussing young children across our Borough, to whichever school happens to have a free place. How high will these costs rise as the Council falls increasingly behind on new school places? Cllr Zara Davis adds I regularly have parents coming to my weekly surgery struggling to find a school place. I do everything I can to help them where the Council has failed. Cllr David Snowdon is determined that the Council will not destroy our area. Weve had some big wins, says David, The 750 unit Skylines redevelopment on Limeharbour was rejected and plans to build on Island Gardens park have been shelved.

problem seriously. At the most recent Council Budget Meeting we found 120,000 which could have been used for a full audit and repair of every road within Tower Hamlets. Instead, Mayor Rahman and Labour joined forces to spend the money on a chauffeur-driven car for the Mayor and yet more Town Hall advisors.
