RESOURCES:
• Four currency conversion cards sets (print out each set per group)
• Questions sheet per person.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Ask learners “What is Currency?”. Write responses on the whiteboard or
butcher paper.
2. Discuss how currency has been used all over the world in different forms for
thousands of years. From cocoa beans of the Mayans, to ancient silver, gold and
copper coins, to today’s paper money. Currencies are issued by central banks of
different countries.
3. We are going to learn about a relatively new currency called the Euro. It has
been in use only since 2002, but 320 million people in 22 countries use it. We are
going to learn about exchanging New Zealand dollars into Euro dollars. Tutor explains
that we are going to use the Euro to learn currency conversion first because it is a it is
a easy number to work out in our head: $1.00 NZD = €0.50 and €1.00 = $2.00 NZD, or
each NZD is worth half of each Euro, and each Euro is worth double each NZD.
4. Hand out currency activity cards.
5. Learners to work in groups of 3-4.
6. Tutor works through the first question with the class:
€0.50 Euro = $1.00 NZD $2.00 NZD = €1.00 Euro

$100 x 0.5 = €50.00 Euro €100 x 2 = $200 NZD

7. Tutor assists groups as necessary. Go through answers with the class when
completed.
8. Hand out Currency Conversion worksheets. Trainees to complete. Go through
answers with the class.
