Conservation Proclamation Week 2: The World Water Crisis Lesson 3 (1 day) Duration: 50 minutes Objectives o Students will take

a look at their own water usage as well as that of their family. This will bring awareness to the United States concept of water usage compared to that of the rest of the globe. o Students will gain a global perspective of the World Water Crisis and understand their role in water scarcity. o Finally, students will walk away with an understanding of how they can decrease their water usage and encourage others to do the same! California State Standards for Earth Science o Students know that the amount of fresh water located in rivers, lakes, underground sources, and glaciers is limited and that its availability can be extended by recycling and decreasing the use of water. Common Core State Standards English-Language Arts CCSS for 5th Grade o RI-Integration of Knowledge and Ideas.9: Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably. o SL-Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas.4: Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace. o SL-Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas.5: Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, sound) and visual displays in presentation when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes. o W-Production and Distribution of Writing.6: With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of two pages in a single sitting. Instruction (Teacher Input) o As a perfect follow-up to yesterdays lesson, students will be challenged to introspect as they look at their own water usage and how that has an impact on water scarcity. o Begin by refreshing students minds and reading the powerful quote mentioned in yesterdays lesson: An American taking a five-minute shower uses more water than the average person in a developing country slum uses for an entire day (water.org). o Walk students through A Day in the Life of a Drop, a worksheet packet which helps students document how much water their families use in a day (http://www.epa.gov/WaterSense/docs/drop_2worksheet508.pdf). o The 6-page document will explain everything in detail. Simply pass out a Water Use Table to each student. This is where each student will record his or her familys water use for 5 days (each student will receive 5 copies of the Water Use Table-to save paper, make back-to-back copies). Independent Activity/Technology Integration o Students will be given 5 copies of the Water Use Table. This sheet will be assigned for homework each night for one week (Monday through Friday). o Students are to document faucet, shower, bath, and toilet usages for each of the members in their families, including themselves. The sheet below is a table for one day. Students will record their observations over the period of 5 days. o Finally, students will gather their data and write a short blog post on KidBlog analyzing their data. Students will write a reflection on their familys water usage along with some easy steps they plan on taking to reduce such water usage. Example:
