jn relation "Smart", The word to modern (smart electronic applications lD cards, smart kidsetc.)and eventhe automotive (smart industry cars), is closely "convenient", associated withimages such as "advanced", quality and"high of life". Such aspects areclosely in tune withDragon's newspecialized series of model kits. given Past trends in model kitshave the priority to detail andaccuracy. The typical approach of most kitmanufacturers isto break alltheir assemblies down into dozens of tiny components, regardless of the complexity needed to assemble them, lt is also a factthatDragon's kitsarelauded theworld for over their amount of detail andtheir wiseapplication of technology. Yet, withmuch going vigorous debate onabout accuracy anddetails, some modelers seem to have overlooked theimportance oftheengineering aspect ofmodel kits. The fact isthat a cleverly designed kitwillnotonly reach thesame desired level of detail andaccuracy, butwillalso make it a joyto build. A better-looking kitwith fewer parts...imagine that! "Work Thesaying, hard or worksmart", definitely applies here, withDragon's engineers having cleverly developed a kitthat willmake themodeler's lifea lot simpler. Wecallthisseries theSmart Kit,because it is a customized solution especially engineered to make building easier andmore fun, without sacrificing anyquality in the endproduct! Dragon's enormous expertise in design and engineering is producing parts, more advanced kits withless individual making them immensely simpler and faster toassemble. Taking model kit design in a whole newdirection, Dragon hasdeveloped a specialized line quality, ofkititems that focuses onhigh easy build assembly, and best of all, unprecedented value forthecustomer. These kitssets themselves apart from ourregular newitems because of thevastamount of development time and engineering effort that isputinto them. The end result isa special blend offeatures formodeling convenience value: and I Enhanced plasticparts.Dragon's engineers haveworked hardat producing parts finely anddelicately detailed in plastic. Inthese kits, metalpartsarea necessity! r Offerunprecedented value.Kitengineering reflects thewants and needs of modelers, withtheresearch teamstepping intothe modeler's shoes. Kitscostlessbecause parts extraneous metal are - butat thesame "value-added notincluded timetheyoffer detail" because parts. of their inclusion of highquality I Cater for modelers who likebuildingOOTB(outof the box). Countless hours arenotgoing to be wasted working on weldseams or carrying out plastic surgery techniques! Thesekitsare readyto be built as soonas theboxlidis opened. Of course. those wholove parts metal parts canstilladdmulti-media as theywish. I Greater enjoyment for the modeler. SmartKitsaredesigned to satisfy! Engineers haveonegoalin mind, great andthatis to design joyto build. kitsthatarea sheer Modeling willbe straightforward and fast, notbecause it is a "simple kit", butbecause it is a SmartKit!

Yet, that's exactlywhat Dragon'sM1 designteam gets to do. Of course they do a lot more than this, but it's well worth pausingto considerthe hubs of the Abrams' road wheels.A careful examinationof these items reveals somethingquite - they'reall transparent! surprising Hard to believe, huh! But pleasetake it from us - they'remade of transparentplastic so that crews can easilycheck the level of the lubricating oilin thewheels. That's why you'll find the road wheels on Dragon's new M1A1 AIM were designed with separate hub covers made from clear plastic!Firsttime ever this detail's appeared in a 1i35 scale Abramskit.Clearly- the bestAbramskit ever!!!

"'!i' ;ilit .ii',:,,1,,i,, it.,.; lt i,,,,

Submariners are fond of saying, "Up periscopel" Now modelersof Dragon's new M1 Abrams can happily say, "Throughperiscope!" Say what? Well, let us explain. On the Commander's Weapons Station(CWS)on the Abrams'turret is a vision block, just forward of the you commander's hatch. lf look at any existing kit of thisvisionblock, you'llfind it has been treated as a standard oeriscooe. But this is far from the case. Insteadif you look at the real tank, or at Dragon'sastounding new 1/35kit, you'llfind thal glass on whilethis periscope can be used in the standardfashion,it also has transparent the rearand frontfaces. This is so the commander can see directly throughthe visionblock when he's lookingfrom a positionstandingin his hatch. Therefore, this vision block has plasticin Dragon'skit. The transparent glass partsare carefully been made of transparent marked so that modelerscan paint the correct parts to get an authentictransparent just like the original. periscope! You can see straight throughthis 1/35scale periscope, Now, all modelers havethe chanceto take a lookthroughthe Abramsperiscope!

For the firsttime neededfive separatepanelstool So that'swhat modelers ever, modelerscan do a maintenance scene with all the covers and panels correctlydepictedand removed just waitingfor a new Textron Lycoming g a st u r b i n e p o w e rp a c kt o b e d r o p p e d AGT1500 in! Now you don't need to cut the deck . . . because we've alreadycarefully shuffled it for you! There is a problem with every Abrams kit produced so far - everysingleone of them has an inaccurateengine deck. Therefore,wrth the new A b r a m s M 1 A 1 A l M , w e t h o u g h ti t w a s t i m e t o shufflethe deck - so to speak!On the real vehicle, thereare four mesh panelshingedto the T-shaped engine cover. When the engine cover is raised, thesefour oanelsmust be removedwith it . . . and s o t h a t ' sw h a t w e d i d o n D r a g o n ' s MlA1. When modelers want to depict a power pack being removed, for example, it's easy because the enginecover and four mesh panels(yes,they do include photo-etchedmesh) are made as one piece.But that'sjust one ace on the top of our deck - we have more tricksuo our sleevestoo.

Did you knowthat the side skirtson an M1A1Abramstank are.justlike people?lt's true some are thick, and some are thin!Only the forwardskirtsof the M1A1 are composed of ballistic Chobhamcomposite armor, while the rearwardones are manufactured from thinnersheetsof steel. Even moreinteresting is the fact that on the rightside of the tank, the firstfour skirtsuse the thickercomposite armor, while on the left side, only the first two dol So why should that be? In fact,it's both simpleand logical. On the rightside of the Abramshull, behind the turret,is a smallammunition compartment that holds several120mmroundsfor the maingun. To minimize the riskof thesestoredammo roundsbeinghit by hostile fire, the designers therefore addedgreaterarmorprotection on the rightside via theseextended ballistic side skirts. You'dneverrealizeall this by lookingat any contemporary 1/35 kit of the Abrams, sinceall manufacturers show the side skirtsas havinga uniformthickness. With its superlativeM1A1 Allvl kit, however, DML createsa convincing and totallyaccurate reoresentation of these side skirts. Some are thick, and some a r e t h i n !W h y n o t take a look under its skirts to check for yourself?!

P-51DMUSTANG

Likeother aircraft of itstime, theP-51D Mustang is covered byflush rivets andpanel lines. However, assmooth asthebodyandlaminar flow airfoils were, suchdetails couldstill be seenon the aircraft itself, and Dragon's designers feel that such a prevalent feature should notbeomitted andmustberepresented by thekit. However, dueto tooling method andlimitations, details represented willseem relatively exaggerated when viewed in its "sprue.form". Fortunately, paint, aswithallkits, layers of primer, andcoating will beapplied on product, finished the andthemodeler willhave complete freedom as to howmuch detail to show bycontrolling theamount applied onthe surface.
