Storyboard- Green Infrastructure By: Tim Gross, Emma Kellar, and Stephen Truban 2
Storm water runoff is a major contributor of pollution to water bodies. When precipitation hits the ground, it begins to flow down grade and picks up anything small enough to be carried, such as sediment, debris, and even toxins, if it is not absorbed by the ground .

Voice over text: One of the most popular and effective green infrastructure practices are green roofs. The idea is to turn the normally large expanse of impervious surface provided by roof tops into green space that will absorb stormwater and collect it, allowing it to naturally return to the atmosphere. As large amounts of area in urban environments consist of flat roofs, this aescetically pleasing solution has gained a lot of popularity in recent years.
Voice over text: Another popluar solution are bioretention cells. These vary is size and design. The basic principle is to use layers of natural growth and media to collect and filter stormwater runoff. In this way, parking lot and street runoff is designed to travel thorugh these open spaces to filter through the various media, before the overflow finally makes it to standard stormwater management systems. This allows for not only reduction of amount, but also filtering of the water itself.
Voice over text: The last example we will show is permeable pavement. Often a lot of land area in an developed area is covered by pavement. This pavement collects stormwater and requires management to direct it to appropriate disoposal. When this pavement is made at least semi-permeable, much of this runoff is then allowed to seep through into the ground and can be absorbed there. This also helps to reduce the amount of contaminates picked up as the stormwater makes its way to the collection system.

Added Benefits
Summary
Disclaimer
Voice over text: There are 3 other major benefits that green infrastructure offers. The largest is energy conservation through temperature regulation, more specifically lowering temperature variance. Another is reduced Carbon dioxide emissions, which is due to eliminating factories that produce energy. The last major benefit is cleaner air which is due to less pollutant emitting factories being needed.
Voice over text: The purpose of green infrastructure is to provide a natural medium to combat growing problems in storm water runoff. This is done quite efficiently through permeable pavements, green roofs, and bioretention methods. Green infrastructure also combats other problems as well including; saving energy, reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, and providing cleaner air. The methods are proven to work in urban areas and thus should be implemented more frequently.
