Topic : What is a Computer? using Popplets

Prior Student Knowledge:

Students knowledge & skills as taught throughout the Introduction to Computers unit. This activity allows students to access prior knowledge. Students have developed knowledge concerning the various parts and functions of a computer. This activity allows teacher to get a diagnostic assessment (assessment for learning) of students level.

Minds On: 15 minutes

Day 1

Day 2

Students form groups of 3 or 4. Pose the question: What is a computer? Each group must come up with a definition and write it out on chart paper. Discuss this and lead students into recognizing that the definition of a computer isnt simply limited to laptops or desktop computers. Smartphones, cars, small appliances all have computers in them as well. Computers have 4 parts: Input, Output, Processing, Storage. For 4 to 5 minutes, groups will brainstorm a list of all the computer components they have learned thus far in the unit and classify them in one of the 4 categories. They can display their information however they like. A few groups present their findings. All chart paper is displayed in the room.

Show video of Amazon Prime Air: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=amazon+prime+air&sm=3 Ask students if they think that this delivery drone is a computer. Why? Does it meet all the hardware requirements (input, output, processing, storage). Can they think of other examples that dont fit the traditional sense of a computer?

Action / Work On:

Day 1

Day 2

Teacher will outline the two-day lesson: produce one Popplet which portrays the definition of a computer using the generic definition (input, output, processing, storage). Students must have examples of each part and explain the function of each example, using pictures, video, text. Teacher will show 2 different exemplars of what other students have produced. Show students how to create a Popplet account. Teacher will demonstrate on LCD projector how to add text, video and pictures and to connect the popplet. Teacher walks around and asks students about the various parts they have chosen and provides feedback on their understanding of the functions of the various components. Explain consolidation to class.

Review how to make connections on Popplet and how easy it is to expand your popplet. Remind students it is due at the end of class. Students continue to add, refine, develop their popplet. Like the first day, teacher walks around and asks students about the examples that represent the various categories and provides descriptive feedback. Explain consolidation to class.

Consolidation and Connections / Debrief:

Day 1 Invite students to share their Popplets by putting them up on the LCD. The focus should be on the knowledge and understanding gained of which category (input, output, processing, storage) each component belongs to, in addition to its function. Students have an opportunity to work on it at home as the account is web-based. Invite students to share their final Popplets by putting them up on the LCD. Again, the focus should be on the knowledge and understanding of the various computer components, but also in the connections they make to the world around them with devices that are computers that they see and use everyday. Students have an opportunity to complete it at home as the account is web-based.

Overall and Specific Curriculum Expectations:

A1. identify and describe the functions of, as well as important advances related to, electronic and computer components; A1.2 use precise terminology to identify various types and features of computer hardware and interfaces (e.g., device name, capacity, speed, bandwidth, connector types); A1.3 identify the basic components and peripheral devices of a computer system (e.g., mainboard, CPU, power supply, hard drive, monitor, mouse, sound card, printer, scanner), and describe their functions; A1.4 describe important advances in electronic components (e.g., development of semiconductor technology) and computer components (e.g., clock rates, fabrication techniques, bus types).

Assessment & Evaluation:

Assessment : Teacher observation Oral descriptive feedback Peer assessment Evaluation: Will be completed later in the unit as part of the PC Teardown evaluation and a Unit Test
