Constitution

Article I - Governing Body Article II - Membership Article III - Elections Article IV - Impeachment Article V - Ratification and Amendments We, the Black Students of Georgetown University, conscious of the educational, political, cultural, social, and spiritual deficiencies at said university, do hereby come together to be hereafter known as the Black Student Alliance. We form this group for the purposes of compensating for aforementioned deficiencies, reaffirming pride and a sense of self awareness and creating a sense of community.

Article I - Governing Body


Section I The governing body for this organization will be an executive board, which shall consist of the following officers: President, Vice President of Programming, Vice President of Operations Treasurer, Secretary, Historian, SOCA Representative, Director of Publicity , and Director of Alumni Relations who are elected by the Black Student Alliance General Membership. There will be a Freshman Representative who is appointed by the President at latest one month after the election of the new executive board. Section II The seal and logo for this organization shall be the Aya, an Adinkra symbol originating from Ghana which signifies defiance. Section III The duties of the Executive Board shall be: To personify the intentions of the membership To fortify the organization in accordance with its purpose To meet at least every week as a board to discuss the actions of the Black Student Alliance To create the agenda for Black Student Alliance meetings To set the tone for the organization throughout the year To serve as representatives for the organization To make decisions in the best interest of the group To hold general membership meetings each month

Section IV The duties of the President shall be: To serve as a representative of the membership to the Administration To recommend the promotion and demotion of certain members after consulting the Executive Board To approve paper work before it is submitted to the Office of Student Programs To approve all outgoing correspondence To call meetings and preside over them To create and dissolve subcommittees of the Black Student Alliance after consulting the membership Revised March 31, 2014

To review all proposals for programming submitted by and to the Executive Board To exercise full control and authority in the event of a crisis or emergency To attend the Black Leadership Forum Meetings, which will be held once a month To attend Black History Month Planning Meetings

Section V The duties of the Vice President of Programming: To assume the role of President if for some reason the President should be unable to fulfill his or her duties To assist the President in all administrative matters mentioned above To assume the role of the Visions of Excellence Ball Chair and take responsibility for the event To attend the Black Leadership Forum Meetings, which will be held once a month To attend Black History Month Planning Meetings To plan Kwanzaa Dinner To plan Late Skate Section VII The duties of the Vice President of Operations: To assign programming to each board member To be a liaison between the Black Student Alliance and other campus organizations To be a liaison between the Black Student Alliance and other BSA/BSUs in the DMV To attend the Black Leadership Forum Meetings, which will be held once a month To assume the role of the Visions of Excellence Ball Nominations Chair To attend Black History Month Planning Meetings Section VIII The duties of the Secretary shall be: To be present at and take minute of all general and executive meetings or send a Black Student Alliance member in his/her place To make the minutes of the meetings available to the general membership by giving them to the Historian to post on the website To handle all official correspondence To oversee the completion of all non-financial forms from the Office of Student Programs and the Student Activities Council To serve as the officer in charge of membership and oversee the BSA register of membership To email all board meeting minutes to board members before the next board meeting To create the Newsletter To make room reservations Section IX The duties of the Treasurer shall be: To manage the finances To present a financial report to the Black Student Alliance Executive Board To be the liaison between the Executive Board and the Student Activities Commission Revised March 31, 2014

To be an active member on the Visions of Excellence Ball Planning Committee and aid with funding

Section X The duties of the Director of Alumni Relations shall be: To maintain the Black Student Alliance's archive and update it each year To annually submit a copy of the archive to University Archives To keep in contact with the Alumni office To stay in contact with the Black Alumni board To present a newsletter and other communicate with alumni for fundraising purposes To give invitations to alumni to attend BSA events To plan a community service event one time each semester with alumni To keep records of the actions or events occurring in Black Georgetown Section XI The duties of the Director of Publicity shall be: To advertise events to the membership To make fliers and other promotional items for all meetings and events To advertise events on other campuses To publish pertinent Black Student Alliance information on the website with the aid of the secretary To make sure, events are placed and advertised, on social media 2 weeks in advance To be in charge of Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook To update the website

Section XII The duties of the Student of Color Alliance (SOCA) Representative shall be: To attend weekly meetings and report back to the Board To plan at least one event per semester, with a non-Black organization

Section XIII The duties of the Freshman Representative shall be: Aid Director of Publicity with reaching out to freshmen class To be a part of the Visions of Excellence Ball Planning Committee

Article II - Membership
Section I Membership shall be opened to all Georgetown students and alumni. Only Undergraduate members however are eligible to vote or hold office

Article III - Elections


Section I Revised March 31, 2014

The Black Student Alliance shall elect its officers by the lst week of April unless another date is needed by the Center for Student Engagement. All elected positions of the Black Student Alliance shall be elected by eligible Black Student Alliance members as described in article II, section I. All terms are held for one year, and elected terms shall begin after the Visions of Excellence Ball or April 30th. Section II In the event of a vacancy or unusual circumstances, the Executive Board reserves the right to appoint someone to fill a position. Section III The electoral Procedure shall be: By unlimited nominations By plurality

Article IV - Impeachment
Section I Grounds for impeachment shall consist of the following: Violation of the policies, duties and procedures as set forth in this constitution; or a board member who is found in violation of University or other binding laws. Section II Procedures for impeachment shall consist of the following: A formal complaint must be submitted by at least two members of the Black Student Alliance or If the officer has missed more than two general and two board meetings Upon receiving this complaint or awareness of the violation, the membership shall convene for a hearing. If judgment is rendered against the officer in question by a majority vote of the membership, that officer is hereby impeached At any time removal from an office shall be determined by a two thirds of a vote of the executive board

Article V Ratification and Amendments


All changes and amendments to this constitution must be made with a two-thirds vote of the executive board.
