In the figure, straight line L1 is a tangent to two separate circles. This straight line is called a common tangent to the two circles.

In the figure, two circles meet each other at only one point A. We say that these two circles touch each other and the point A is the point of contact. In this case, only one common tangent can be drawn passing through the point of contact and the circles lie on the opposite sides of the common tangent. Then we say that the circles touch each other externally at point A.
