Steps For Designing An O-Ring And Groove Dimensions

1. Factors to consider in deciding on a compound
A. Temperature Range
B. Fluid Compatibility
C. Cost

2. Dimensions of the O-Ring

A. Larger cross-section is preferred.
B. Design O-Ring so the 1% - 5% of stretch is on the inside
diameter. On A piston application, up to 10% stretch.

3. Determine Gland Size

A. Refer to page 18 and 19
B. Rod seal and face seal should have outside diameter of O-Ring
the same dimension or larger than the gland. (Up to 5% larger)

STATIC SEALING
A. Gland Depth
G. Groove Width

DYNAMIC SEALING
A. Gland Depth
G. Groove Width

O-Ring major diameter may be stretched or slightly compressed, as required to permit use of closest standard
(AS 568) size. This usually facilitates installations as well.
Dimensions above suitable for pressure to 1500 psi (10.4 Mpa). Higher pressure is feasible by reducing
clearance (C), increasing O-Ring hardness, or utilizing anti-extrusion device. Dynamic recommendations are
intended for reciprocating and iscillating service, but apply for rotary motion where surface speed does not
exceed 1800 feet/minute (.92 m/s).

Comments
Elastomer may exhibit swelling and/or loss of physical
properties under severe conditions.

10 - 20%

Elastomer may exhibit swelling in addition to a change in

physical properties. May be suitable for static
applications.

20 - 40%

Elastomer exhibits a noticable change in swelling and

physical properties. Questionable performance in most
applications.

> 40%

Elastomer not suitable for service.

Insufficient information avaialable for rating.

Chemical Compatibility Tables

This guide is intended to assist the user in determining the suitability of various elastomers in many
different chemical environments. The ratings are based on a combination of published literature, laboratory
tests, actual field experience, and informed judgements. As laboratory tests do not necessarily predict enduse performance, users should conduct their own evaluations to determine application suitability.
NOTE: Volume swell is only one indicator of elastomer fluid compatibility and may be based on the solubility
parameter alone. Fluid attack on the backbone of the polymer may show up as a change in physical properties
such as Tensile Strength, Elongation at Break and Hardness.
Elevated temperature and extended exposure times may create more aggressive conditions than cited in this
guide. In some cases, specific elastomer compounds within a material family may provide improved
compatibility. Please contact AFT Fasteners for assistance in choosing the right elastomer for your
application.
The information given in this chemical compatibility guide is believed to be reliable, but no
representation, guarantees or warranties of any kind are made to its accuaracy or suitability
for any purpose.
