1. 1.1

INTRODUCTION Purpose This specification describes the basic requirements for the installation of electrical tracing systems. Such requirements have to be understood as general prescriptions, as the technical definition of the plant and of its components is in charge and under the responsibility of the Supplier.

1.2

Rules and Reference documents All Rules, reference documents and information this specification does no include, but which describe the plant and its materials, are listed in the Data Sheet and in the documents it makes reference to or/and which are enclosed. Unless differently stated, a reference has to be made even to the last item of the IEC and CEI Regulations concerning all individual plants and materials. Should a controversy arise among prescriptions of the above mentioned Rules, this specification and the Data Sheet, priority will be given to those of the Data Sheet, then to those of the Rules and finally to this specification. Possible special materials which do not comply with any of the above Rules have to be reported to the Purchaser who reserves the right of giving the authorisation for their use or not.

INSTALLATION

2.1

General prescriptions The plant installation will be carried out according to the last item of the Reference Rules mentioned at point 1.2. In any case the electrical plants have to be built according to the rules of a proper technology, particularly as far as safety and accident prevention are concerned.

2.2 2.2.1

Installation of heating elements Mineral-insulated cable It should be installed avoiding overlappings of the heating cable which, otherwise, would overheat in the intersection point, till it burns. Joints between sections of the heating cable, between heating cable and cold junction, terminals, etc., should be made by qualified personnel!, according to the installation instructions suggested by the Supplier and only using the specified instruments. A special care has to be used while installing the insulation, in order to avoid that part of the insulation interposes between the piping to be heated and the heating element itself, thus overheating the cable as the heat exchange does not occur. The heating element should be fastened to the piping to be heating through metallic tapes or other accessories suggested by the Supplier. It is advisable not to use thermic cements or alluminium sheets and/or tapes to increase the surface of heat exchange.

2.2.2

Self-regulation cables Their installation must be carried out checking that all terminals and joints are done only with adequate kits, thus avoiding the infiltration of humidity within the cable. Even this kind of heating cable will be fastened to the piping through metallic ties or other accessories suggested by the Supplier.

2.2.3

Cable with polyfluorcarbonate insulation No particular care is required in installing this kind of cable, anyway it is advisable to avoid a cable overlapping.

06170.VAR.ETI.SPC Rev. 1 August 1997 Sheet 6

2.2.4

Cable with parallel resistances Even in this case, overlappings of the heating element have to be avoided; joints, terminals, etc. will be exclusively obtained through those accessories suggested by the Supplier. During the installation, excessive cable tensions should be avoided, as they could damage the heating elements. The fastening to the piping will be made through metallic ties or other accessories suggested by the Supplier.

2.2.5

SECT System The insulated cable is inserted into the pipe once this latter has already been welded onto the process pipe and equipped with all necessary insertion boxes. According to the length of the heating circuit, it is useful to arrange the installation of connecting boxes allowing some sectioning. The electrical connection between conductor and pipe is done at the end of the heating circuit, through the adequate terminal.

2.3 2.3.1

Installation of power supply and control circuits Installation of pipes and related accessories Pipes connections have to be made through sleeves, spouts made up by three pieces or similar articles. The connecting surfaces among pipes, spouts, sleeves, connections, and cover inlets should have a conical thread according to the Specification UNI 6125 in force. Bends have to be done through a direct bending of the pipe, through prefab elbow bends or through angle boxes and the bending radius should not be lower than the minimum levels prescribed for those cables which must be inserted into the pipe and, in any case, they should not be lower than the sextuple of the outside diameter of the pipe. To ensure the possibility of cable insertion without causing damages, it is not allowed to make many consequent bends totalling to more than 270 without interposing an angle box or an insertion connection. Should it be impossible to avoid the water penetration through the connections or the condensation inside the pipes, the adequate drainage systems have to be arranged.

2.3.2

Cable laying-down It must be avoided that the conductors are subject to tensile stresses and the prescribed bending radiuses have to be observed. The inlet and the layout of the power circuits inside the covers should avoid a dangerous overheating of the metallic parts due to the inductive effect.

06170.VAR.ETI.SPC Rev. 1 August 1997 Sheet 7

2.3.3

Connections and bypass All connections, bypass and joints to the control systems and the heating elements have to be done through some devices which: allow an easy insertion of the conductor ends to be connected into their housings; allow the connection without causing reductions in the conductor cross-section; keep the contact pressure constant: do not deteriorate in a humid environment; the cable ends to be connected to the devices, joints and by -pass should constantly assure an insulation of the conductors, among them and earthstream, equal or higher than the one of the cables, thus avoiding tensile, bending or twisting stresses at the terminals of the connected devices thanks to a proper conductor shaping.

2 3.4

Sealed cable passages To get the proper sealing it is necessary to avoid any holes or porosity into the cement mass or in the insulating putty. If more cables are located into the same sealed passage, it is necessary to adopt all necessary precautions on the matter. The cement mass or insulating putty have to comply to the requirements of the Norms CEI 31-1 and, when they are used, they must be suitable to completely fill all gaps and, once the mass has solidified, to keep the compactness necessary to avoid gas infiltration during the times.

3.

INSPECTIONS AND APPROVAL TESTS AFTER INSTALLATION

3.1 3.1.1

Heating elements Cable of the self-regulating type Before laying the non-conducting insulating material a visive verification of the correct cable laying would be advisable; in particular it has to be checked that the installation type is conforming to the documents of the project (rectilinear or spiralshaped, spiral pitch, a.s.o.). Furthermore, the mechanical conditions of the cable will be controlled, which must be completely devoid of cuts, abrasions or other damages. An insulation trial will have to be carried out, according to the prescriptions given by the supplier of the installed heating system. The same trial will have to be repeated subsequently when laying the said non conducting insulation.

3.1.2

Cable of the mineral insulating type. Besides the control of the conformity to the project and to mechanical convictions, it will be determinating to check that there are absolutely no overlappings of the heating element nor interruptions in the connections between the heating cable and the piping to be heated. A trial before and after the laying of the non-conducting insulation is always considered necessary.

3.1.3

Parallel resistance cable type In this case too a verification of the conformity to the project, of the good mechanical convictions, of the complete absence of overlappings, as well as an insulation test before and after the laying of the said non conducting insulation, is absolutely indispensable.

3.1.4

Insulating cable in polyfluorocarbonate. Here, the same prescriptions as described at point 3.1.3 are valid.

3.1.5

SECT heating system Only the insulation trial, before and after the non-conducting insulation laying is required.

3.2

Accessories After installation, a visive control of the accessory equipment installed is requested. Particular attention will have to be given, during the controls to the gasket-and termination kits, as to exclude manufacturing, as well as installation defects. The functionality of possible protection system, such as thermostats, will have to be verified.
