This issue of The Columbia Notebook is dedicated to our sister,

Susan. With all our love; forever in our hearts.

At the end of the day, we believe that what women truly want is to have made a difference, to have mattered in the lives of others. And so we take this opportunity to honor a woman who mattered beyond measure to us: our sister Susan, who will continue to inuence us and our families for generations to come. A daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, she loved and was loved in every role. Over the past two-and-a-half years, we watched her ght illness with dignity and grace; never once asking, Why me? She taught us much as we witnessed her courage, strength, love of life, family and faith.

LETTER FROM THE EDITORS

The Columbia Notebook is proud to have reached its 11th year of publishing and gratefully acknowledges our advertisers as our greatest strength. We are also proud to be in the trenches with every woman who, with increased demands on her time and energy, still manages to discover solutions for every situation, problematic or not. While it has dismayed us to see the number of publications that have fallen by the wayside during the past 10 years, our distribution base and our audience have remained consistent and constant. Thanks to the recovering economy, we believe The Columbia Notebook has an opportunity to grow considerably in the next two years, which translates to even more distribution and a larger audience. To help make that happen, wed like to better dene how The Columbia Notebook best meets our advertisers and readers needs. Our original premise for the magazine, What Women Want, was predicated on two platforms: 1. a largely female audience; and 2. tried-and-true suppliers of products and services that we personally rely upon and recommend. That focus hasnt changed and we are convinced it is working well. Our audience counts on The Columbia Notebook to have practical and sensible information available for every reader, whether its an explanation by one of our advertisers that better explains their services or products, or one of the many articles that hold advice, recipes and household hints. Our future issues will continue to focus on practical, day-to-day issues, expanding to include more services that address the challenges of our time, such as geriatric care options for those of us in the sandwich generation, and where to turn for excellent professional advice when, for instance, other technology fails us, from our laptops to our vehicles. As we personally research and seek out the very best providers for services and products, we promise you that we will continue to stay true to our original mission, emphasizing ways and means to cope with the reality of the new paradigms within which women are working at home or at the ofce every day. That is the strength of our publication and it is unique to The Columbia Notebook. Grow with us.

Beauty
To the outside world we all grow old. But not to brothers and sisters. We know each other as we always were. We know each others hearts. We share private family jokes. We remember family feuds and secrets, family griefs and joys. We live outside the touch of time.

Oily Skin? Try Cleansing with Oil!

Use any one or multiple oils in any combination you like. They each have different properties and will produce different results. Please note, though, that castor oil can be drying and should be used combined with another oil. Some popular choices are: mineral oil, sunower oil, olive oil, meadowfoam oil, jojoba oil and coconut oil (coconut oil may cause breakouts for certain skin types). Blend examples: for sometimes oily, sometimes dry, frequently aky and easily irritated skin, try 25% castor oil with 75% sunower seed oil in a 4-ounce bottle. Premix your choice of oils and place in a container that will permit you to easily pour controlled amounts and help avoid introducing bacteria to the mix. You will need a soft washcloth, your oil blend and hot running water.
How to Oil Cleanse:

2. Apply oil and massage it into your face for a minute or two. 3. Wipe the oil off with a warm, wet washcloth. Hold the washcloth to cover your face; allow it to stay until it cools. Wipe the oil gently away and rinse the washcloth well in hot, running water. Hold the washcloth to your face again, allowing it to cool. Wipe gently, rinse the washcloth well, and repeat two or three more times. Scrubbing is unnecessary your skin will be soft, smooth and free of akes without manual exfoliation and irritation. Impurities, dead skin cells and bacteria will be gently swept away. 4. One or two drops of your blend may be used to moisturize the skin after the cleansing oil has been removed from your face if your skin feels tight. Pat it onto your damp skin and gently massage any residue into your skin so there is no lm of oil left on the surface.
Sources: theoilcleansingmethod.com, reddit.com

1. Pour a generous puddle of oil into the palm of your hand, an amount approximately the size of a quarter; more is acceptable. Rub your hands together to warm the oil.

Conquering the Effects of Summer on Your Hair

Brandi Jones, Vintage Salon Summer is almost here, and most of us dread it. The biggest reason for that? Frizz; yes, big frizzy hair. There are some excellent products that will help you combat frizz. My personal favorite is Alterna bamboo, one of the best products I have ever used. It is free of sulfates, parabens, gluten and sodium chloride. If you like more organic products without losing the lather, this is denitely worth trying. The Alterna bamboo anti-frizz shampoo is amazing. It leaves the hair shiny, not dull; full of body, not limp. While most anti-frizz products weigh the hair down, the Alterna anti-frizz doesnt coat your hair or leave a feeling of residue on the hair. As much as I love this product, I would not recommend it for super-ne hair. Alterna has a shampoo called abundant volume shampoo, which
6 The Columbia Notebook Spring/Summer 2014

would work for ne hair. It is a must try as well and has an awesome scent, something that many organic shampoos dont. Throughout the sunny days of summer, we also need to tackle color fading. Who wants their awesome color to fade? No one! Always use a color-protected shampoo. Alterna bamboo vibrant color shampoo and conditioner helps to hold color for up to 60 washes, depending on how much is done to your hair besides color. The number one reason color fades so fast in the summer is because 30 minutes in the sun can denitely create a bleach effect. Cover your hair when in the sun and keep that fabulous color as vibrant as possible! And remember the brand Alterna when shopping for ways to conquer summer hair problems!

Quick Tips for the Table

Silverware and dinnerware rules:
Eat to your left; drink to your right. Any food dish to the left is yours; any glass to the right is yours. Once used, your utensils (including the handles) must not touch the table again. Always rest forks, knives and spoons on the side of your plate in the 4/20 position.

Serving food:

LIVE MUSIC with BILLY SLOAN every Wednesday.

Passing dishes or food:

Pass food from the left to the right. Do not stretch across the table or across other guests to reach food or condiments. If another diner asks for the salt or pepper, pass both together, even if a tablemate asks for only one of them, so that other dinner guests wont have to search for orphaned shakers.

Table tech manners:

Turn off your cellphone or switch it to silent or vibrate mode before sitting down to eat, and leave it in your pocket or purse. It is impolite to answer any phone during dinner. If you must make or take a call, excuse yourself from the table and step outside of the restaurant.

We Want to Make a Difference

Sometime in our lifetime, we will all be touched by cancer, be it ourselves, a family member or a friend. Peggy and I made this bracelet for our family members. Each bead color stands for a word that helps cope with this terrible disease: RED: for energy, love and strength YELLOW: for hope BLUE: for peace and calm PURPLE: for spirituality GREEN: good luck When we wore them, people inquired about them and asked if they could purchase one. We thought about it and thought why not? there is strength in numbers and we would like to donate a portion of the sales to cancer research. If you are interested in owning one of these bracelets, please email jakeannie@aol.com or call Cathy at 803-252-6162.

Different Necklines Look Better with Certain Necklace Styles

Turtlenecks best with longer necklaces Crewnecks best with short necklaces such as necklace collar or bib styles Scoop necks ll in the space with multiple strands of beads or larger scale pendants Strapless look great with chokers or short pendants, leaving your lovely decolletage bare Square necks look for pendants with an angular nish to harmonize with the angular neckline Asymmetric necklines look for necklaces that arent symmetrical; a necklace that has its own asymmetry can work, alternatively a long string of different sized and shaped beads can work well Halter necks these create a narrow V neck, so look for a narrow pendant with a sharper end V-neck ideally a necklace that matches the shape of the V, depending if its a wider or narrower V-neck Collared shirt (button down) there isnt much space for anything too wide, so a choker style works if you have a long neck; if not, a slimmer pendant that sits above the last open button Boat neck a long string or two of beads is ideal for this neckline Cowl neck this neckline is already detailed and has volume, so either a short and small pendant or a pair of earrings instead of a necklace Sweetheart a curved necklace that has width will balance the open decolletage of this neckline.

A Diamond for Everyone

The four Cs are key here: Carat, Clarity, Color and Cut. For some of you, carat may be the most important C, but for most having a stone that encompasses all four Cs is the best. Every diamond is unique. Each diamond is graded to a set of standards; however, not all diamonds will look the same. When selecting a diamond, nd the one that looks the most attractive to you. Even more important, nd a diamond that you love as well as can afford! Some people know exactly what they are looking for in an engagement ring. Others need more time to gure out the details. Either way, be sure to nd a jeweler you can trust. Buying an engagement ring isnt just a onetime jewelry purchase. Buying an engagement ring is the start of a relationship with a jeweler who will guide you through future major life events.

Every engagement ring purchase is as unique as the person for whom it is being bought. There are a few things to consider when purchasing the perfect ring. First, it is important to think about for whom the ring is being purchased. What does she like? You might be one of the few whose girlfriend isnt picky, but more than likely she has an opinion. Some women want their perfect engagement ring to look a certain way. If this is the case, diamond quality isnt as important as the overall appearance of the ring. On the other hand, she may be a seasoned jewelry lover who appreciates good quality over size. Enlist the help of your girlfriends friends or mother. They will be able to help guide you in the right direction! Once you know what youre looking for overall, its time to pick your center stone.

International Diversication: Still a Viable Strategy?

Courtesy of: Jan Jernigan, Vice President and Financial Advisor, Morgan Stanley in Columbia, South Carolina, 803-343-8948 or 800-438-5570 Despite the developing global economy, some investors still believe that owning U.S. securities is sufcient that international securities would just duplicate their efforts. But a closer look at economic and market trends reveals numerous reasons for continuing to diversify with investments from around the world. a trend that some analysts believe could be sustainable. Aweaker dollar could enhance the dollar-based returns of foreign investments. Finally, keep in mind that many of the worlds top companies are headquartered overseas. If you decide to tap into that wider universe of investment opportunity, consider the potential advantages of an international stock mutual fund. Be aware that foreign investments entail special risks, including currency uctuations and differences in regulations and accounting practices.

Unique economic environments There are still signicant differences between countries markets and economic sectors. For example, the nancial services and energy sectors represent a much larger percentage of international market capitalization than U.S. market capitalization. On the other hand, the technology and health care sectors represent a larger percentage of U.S. market capitalization. Valuation variations When international stocks are less expensive than U.S. stocks, value-oriented investors and investors looking to diversify growth-oriented portfolios may nd attractive opportunities in foreign markets. Currency considerations During the 1990s, the rising value of the U.S. dollar curtailed the returns of foreign investments. More recently, however, the dollar has weakened versus the euro,

Bathing Suit Blues

Ram Kalus MD, Plastic Surgery of the Carolinas, PA After this memorable (or preferably forgettable) winter, beautiful Carolina spring weather will soon be upon us and the summer bathing suit season wont be far behind. That may be a source of stress for some, especially young moms who may feel that despite the gift of their beautiful child/ ren, their bodies might have paid a price, being somewhat changed and perhaps less attractive than before pregnancy. The effects of pregnancy on the body can be signicant, both for breasts and tummy, but also for other areas such as thighs. Today, implant options are greater than ever. For a pretty and natural appearance, keeping proportions in mind is the key to avoiding an unnatural or operated appearance. The tummy can often be addressed with liposuction, but a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) might be necessary to remove the excess skin and stretch marks, and even the occasional C-section scar that may have healed poorly. In some cases both liposuction and a tummy tuck (lipoabdominoplasty or combituck) may be necessary, and liposuction can denitely help remove excess fat deposits

What can be done? For a pretty and natural appearance, First, a healthy lifestyle is paramount. A Terric Reason to Visit the Arcade!

Paul D. Sloan, Paul D. Sloan Interiors After enjoying the past 30 years of interior design and retail sales, I have decided to open a new storefront. My new home will be at the Historic Arcade, built in 1912, with its marble faades and beautiful gothic features. I know it will be the perfect home for me. Many artists have located their studios in this beautiful place and I am looking forward to joining them and participating in the redevelopment of Downtown Columbia. With my love of many beautiful elements for the home, I will continue to have all the beautiful lines of furniture, lamps, accessories, fabrics and wallpapers that I have had for the last 30 years. I will be on the premises as of April 1, 2014 and will continue to provide in-home design consultations as well as in the store. Some may have thought that I had retired during my enjoyable months with Ellen

Taylor Interiors, but that is far from the truth. With my excitement and enthusiasm about the eld that I have chosen, I plan to be working with clients and customers for many years to come. My gallery will represent many artists from Columbia as well as other parts of the country. I plan to participate in First Thursdays on Main Street my rst one will be on April 3. My phone number remains the same, (803) 733-1704, and my new address is 1216 Washington Street, Suite 29, Columbia 29201, between Main and Sumter streets. I look forward to seeing many of you whom I already know, plus meeting many new people in this active and beautiful place. Thank you for keeping me in mind for all your needs.

We ask the question:

Can the Midlands Become a No-Kill Community?

Denise Wilkinson, CEO, Pawmetto Lifeline When Pawmetto Lifeline started in 1999, the founders never imagined that so many things would have been accomplished by 2014. We hoped and dreamed and committed to do our best. In our rst year in the new Meyer Finlay Pet Adoption Center of Lexington and Richland Counties, we served more than 35,000 dogs and cats. We still watch our medical team in surgery with amazement, because we know it is truly a dream come true to have our Humane Alliance Certied High Quality, High Volume Medical Clinic. I remember attending a conference in 2002 and leaving with the thought that someday Pawmetto Lifeline would have its own medical clinic. So now that the building is open and programs are operating, our next goal is for the Midlands to become a No-Kill Community. But we have to ask the question: Is this possible? The simple answer is Yes. Many communities have achieved the No-Kill goal, which means no healthy or treatable adoptable dog or cat dies due to homelessness. Many smaller and much larger communities are taking in thousands of animals a year and only euthanizing the ones that are inhumanely suffering and cannot be helped medically, or the ones that are too aggressive to be adopted. Some believe that 10% of the entire population that enters a shelter should be euthanized not the 68% that we are euthanizing in the Midlands. So, one should ask:Why does the Midlands have one of the highest euthanasia rates in our state, much higher than Charleston or Greenville? Charlestons euthanasia rate is less than 8% and Greenvilles euthanasia rate is 37%. The rst step to becoming a No-Kill community is making a commitment that our community will no longer euthanize treatable, healthy adoptable animals. Until we commit to that standard of care, we will NOT become a No-Kill community. Once the commitment is made, we must put proven best practices in place to ensure we have programs that focus on adoptions, spaying/neutering and services that help people solve their own problems with their pets.

Why does the Midlands have one of the highest euthanasia rates in our state, much higher than Charleston or Greenville?
Nathan Winograd, director of the national No-Kill Advocacy Center, believes a community can become a No-Kill community overnight. I think it depends on how committed our community and our leaders are to achieving this goal. Is it easy? No. Does it take a lot of work and a change in how we respond to the problem? Yes! With any community that has achieved the No-Kill status, the top priority is the live release rate. The standard process of transporting, housing and euthanizing can no longer be the norm. Our community, meaning pet owners and our leaders, must commit to solving the problem and no longer accept that euthanizing our best friends is acceptable. So can the Midlands become a No-Kill Community? Of course we can. It is about humanity, compassion and respect. It is about putting real solutions in place through public/private partnerships that save money, solve problems and save lives.

Keep Your Pet Comfortable This Summer

Use caution and common sense to prevent possible problems related to summer weather. Expect your dogs activity level to decrease as the temperature increases. Make sure your dog has a cool and comfortable spot to rest throughout the day and night. Your pets appetite may decrease in the warm weather. Consider dividing your pets usual portion of food into two smaller serving sizes and feeding twice a day instead of once a day. Always provide plenty of clean, fresh water. If you are leaving your pet for a longer than normal period of time on a hot day, leave several bowls of water. During the summer, exercise your dog either during the early morning hours or evening hours when it is cooler. Take extra care with pets that are at more of a disadvantage in the summer time. Dogs and cats with long fur do not fare as well as those with shorter fur. Dogs with short or contorted faces and nasal cavities (such as bulldogs, pugs) have an especially difcult time because of their limited ability to pant. Pets with respiratory or heart problems are at increased risk for heatstroke; overweight pets have a more difcult time keeping their bodies cooled down. Cats love to stay cool in the warm weather, licking themselves to spread moisture over their body. As it evaporates, it carries away some body heat. Fans can help accelerate this process. Cats do not pant to cool down. If your cat is panting, he is either stressed out or seriously overheated. Get the animal to a cooler spot, moisten its fur with cool water or wrap the cat in a wet towel and place him or her in front of a fan. Cool water on the footpads may also help. Contact your veterinarian immediately. Cats are often drawn to open windows during the summer months. Make sure all screens are secured and that screening is not worn out or coming loose from the frame. Animals trapped inside of hot cars are especially at risk for heatstroke. Never leave a dog or cat in a parked vehicle during hot summer months. Even on a cloudy day, over just a few moments, a car can heat up like a furnace in a matter of minutes. Tragedy often results for the animal who may suffer a horrendous death; their human companion may be charged with a criminal act of cruelty to animals.
