A day in the life of a lawyer By: Morgan Bettenhausen

A normal day in the life of a lawyer can vary on a day to day basis. I have chosen to reflect a more interesting work day, a day in court. Lonnie Williams is a practiced lawyer and has handled many cases, today is no different.

Lonnie starts his day like any normal person, he gets up, gets dressed, etc. Now to the more interesting stuff. Lonnie stops by his office on the way to the courthouse to get the important case documents. Lonnie is defending a big box companys ceo, John Moneybags, accused of embezzlement. The accuser an investment corp. who claims over 300,000 dollars was used for the ceos personal account. Lonnie has been preparing for this case for a few months. He had to establish basic arguments of why he believes that Moneybags is innocent and prove it effectively.

Lonnie arrived at the courthouse early to prepare with his client and condition him for the stand where he will testify on his behalf. Lonnie also has to be careful that he doesn't tell the ceo what to say or Lonnie could get in trouble for altering his statement. An hour or so passes and court is beginning, the judge presiding over the case swears in the witnesses and the jury comes in. the investing corporations lawyer starts off by stating the plaintiffs side and calling up a witness to testify against the ceo. the witness is the ceos former personal assistant, April Weathers. Lonnie approaches the stand to ask the witness some questions. Ms. Weathers, why do you believe that Mr. Moneybags has been embezzling money from this investment corporation? She responds almost right away , I handle all his payroll and checkbooks, I noticed gaps in the investment checks. Lonnie gets an idea why aren't you working with the company anymore?

Weathers looks off, I um got caught stealing from the companys funds Lonnie smirks realizing he's caught the witness, You stole money from the company? You also had control of the books during the time that Mr. Moneybags allegedly stole money from the investors! Weathers looks around she knows shes been caught. Lonnie addresses the Judge and Jury, I would like to show the court that Ms. April Weathers lied on the stand. The court takes a recess while the judge summons Lonnie and the Plaintiffs lawyer to her chambers. They discuss Aprils confession and Lonnie argues that his client should be released as there is no other evidence of his guilt. The judge agrees with Lonnie that there is no reason to continue on with the case. The ceo is allowed to go free and continue work at his company, the investment corp. is to be repaid by April Weathers. April is to be tried in her own case soon. Now Lonnie has worked the case out and found the truth, he retires to his home and takes a long nights rest before starting it all over tomorrow.
