Matrix structure of organization Matrix structure of organization is a new concept in management studies. It makes use of dual chains of authorities.

It superimposes the function chain over the divisional chain. The matrix structure gained popularity as well as criticism since very beginning of it. The number of those who criticize is more than those who appreciate it. The critics say that there are many disadvantages of dual chains. I also think the same. Dual chains are meant to make the role of managers more ambiguous, thereby likely making them irresponsible. Dual chains may create organizational anarchy within the organization. There may start a silent battle within the organization to get more and more managerial powers. The organization may have to bear the burden of some unnecessary posts created just for the sake of adopting matrix structure i.e. dual chain structure. Pressure groups may start within the company and the company may face a failure in meeting its prime goals due to a decrease in effective output of the employees. Matrix structure not only creates confusions within the organizations, but it creates issues related with the accountability as well. Also, in some very big organizations with matrix structure in action, large overheads tend to form where matrices are developed within the matrix. For all these reasons, many companies have blamed the matrix structure for their organizational difficulties and issues.
