LESSON PRESENTATION

Introduction/Motivational Activities/Anticipatory Set:

LEADER: “Hey, guys! Raise your hand if you have a friend. (Get responses.) Great, it looks like most of you do. Now raise your hand
if you have more than one friend. (Get responses.) Wow! You guys are pretty special. Aren’t friends the best?! In the Bible, there’s a
cool story about some very good friends.

Detailed Teaching Sequence

PRESENT THE BIBLE LESSON (2-5-2 BASICS LARGE GROUP EXPERIENCE 11-15-09)

MAN NEEDS HELP

LEADER: (Open Bible to Luke 5.) “In the book of Luke, we read that one of these friends needed help. This friend couldn’t walk and
the other guys really wanted to help him. They had heard about Jesus and that He could heal people, so they decided to take their
friend to see Jesus. They worked together to come up with a plan to get him inside the house where Jesus was speaking.

the PROBLEM
LEADER: “Sounds pretty easy, huh? I mean, if you need to go inside a house, you just walk through the door, right? But there were
some problems. First, these guys were carrying their friend … on a mat. He couldn’t walk, so someone had to carry him if he went
anywhere. Then, when the guys got there, they discovered this HUGE crowd of people there, listening to Jesus and trying to get
inside to see Jesus. In fact, the crowd was so big, there was no room to move around. So even if they’d wanted to make room, they
probably couldn’t have. This was a BIG problem! What do you think they should’ve done? Do you all have any ideas?

2
Encourage ideas such as digging a hole under the house, etc. But always come to the conclusion that would take too much time or
they didn’t have the machinery we have today, etc.

“Does anyone know what the friends did? (Get responses.) Yes, they went up on top of the house and made a hole through the roof!
Can you imagine someone digging a hole through your roof? The houses and roofs back then were made a lot differently than they
are today. They were more flat and made of things like mud and sticks or straw, similar to the house here on stage. The guys put
their friend on a mat and lowered him through the roof, where Jesus was inside. As you can see, roofing materials, like the hay and
mud, must have fallen on the heads of those inside. I think Jesus may have gotten a little dusty and dirty Himself!

Demonstrate action using diorama, Bible Figures, and Stretcher. Use scissors to cut hole
in top of diorama and lower figure down into room.

JESUS CHANGES GUY’S LIFE

LEADER: “Obviously this got Jesus’ attention. Can you imagine the roof starting to fall in, sunlight coming into the room, and a man
suddenly lowered on a mat in front of you? Their actions showed how much faith they had in Jesus. They just KNEW Jesus could
heal him! Then Jesus said something a little strange to the guy on the mat. He told the man that his sins were forgiven; all the wrong
things he’d ever done or would do were forgiven! Jesus wasn’t as concerned that this man couldn’t walk. He was much more
concerned about his heart—his spiritual life—so Jesus changed that first.

“But some of the people there didn’t like what Jesus did. They were the Pharisees. They didn’t like Jesus and were always trying to
catch Jesus doing something wrong. They were offended that Jesus would claim to forgive the man’s sins. They knew only God could
forgive sins. Even though they hadn’t said anything out loud, Jesus knew what they were thinking. He told them He’d been given the
power to forgive sins. Jesus then healed the paralyzed man. Jesus changed his life again, but this time on the outside. The people
watching were amazed. And it began because some friends got together to help another friend. See, [Impress] friends who trust God
work together to change lives. Can you say that with me?”

LEADER and KIDS: [Impress] “Friends who trust God work together to change lives.”

Closure:
LEADER: “You may not have a friend who needs to be healed so he can walk, but you probably have a friend at school or in your
neighborhood who’s going through a tough time. Maybe someone in their family is sick or they just moved here and don’t know
anyone. Maybe they’re having a tough time financially or their mom or dad is looking for a job. This is the perfect opportunity for
you and some friends to do something special for that person. Maybe you can make cookies and visit with her or invite her over to do
something special with your family. Who is the Creekside Friend that we are helping this month? What are we having at our church
to help her? What will our help do? Don’t forget to come to the Kidney Walk and if you forgot to give your Billboard to someone and
invite them there’s still time.

Guided Practice/Independent Practic/Assessment Activities:

Guided: Teacher will model worksheet exercise.

4. Repeat for the other three scenes.
