Associate Degree of Nursing

The Associate Degree of Nursing Program at Dallas Nursing Institute (DNI) is a five-term program of study leading to an Associate of Applied Science Degree. This program prepares the graduate for the NCLEX-RN, the licensing exam for registered nurses. The curriculum at DNI is designed following the block nursing format. Block format means that all of the content for the specialty courses is presented in one course. The content within each course is arranged from the simple to the complex. The program design focuses on the following three roles of the nurse as described by the Texas Board of Nursing: Provider of Care, Coordinator of Care, and Member of the Profession. Health promotion, disease prevention, and disease management are major concepts that are incorporated into each course. A systematic approach is the framework that the nurse utilizes for assessment, planning, and evaluating the nursing care. The DNI nursing program facilitates learning in three domains: intellectual, psychomotor, and affective. Theory courses, skills labs, and the clinical settings provide a variety of environments in which the student can learn and critically analyze each learning experience. The Dallas Nursing Institute, as well as nurses who work in the community, operates within an environment rich in diversity, and this is explored in every learning experience. Understanding of and respect for each individual is an essential characteristic for the nurse.
Upon completion of the program, the graduate will:

Take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Utilize critical thinking to apply a systematic approach using evidenced-based data in the delivery of competent, culturally sensitive, and developmentally appropriate holistic care. Use analytical, logical reasoning for clinical judgment and nursing decision-making. Assume accountability and responsibility for the quality of nursing care, upholding legal and ethical standards, participating in lifelong learning and professional development, and promoting the nursing profession while participating as a citizen in society. Collaborate effectively with individuals and groups using oral, written, non-verbal, and electronic communications to enhance the therapeutic process and to maintain collegial professional relationships. Coordinate human and material resources in providing comprehensive, efficient, and cost-effective to persons/clients.

Any student enrolling in a program starting after 12/1/2011 will meet the following criteria:
Admission Statement
Guided by the mission statement of the Dallas Nursing Institute, the Nursing Admission Committee selects applicants for admission to the School who meet the Specific Pre-admission Educational Requirements.

General Pre-Admission Requirements

Applicants are admitted to the school on a semester basis. General requirements include: 1. Completed application form. 2. Non-refundable application fee. 3. Official transcript of all high school credits, or, if applicable an official General Education Test (G.E.D.) certificate. 4. Official transcripts from all post-secondary schools attended. 5. Be at least 17 years of age. (In accordance with Texas laws, if under 18, a parent or legal guardian signature is required prior to enrollment).

Specific Pre-Admission Educational Requirements

A. Standardized Test Requirements for Admission-All accepted applicants must achieve performance on one of the following: 1. An American College Test (ACT) score within the last five years with a composite score of 19 or above or 2. A Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) score within the last five years with a composite score of 1350 or above; or 3. The RN Admission Assessment HESI A2 Exam composite of score of 80 or above within the last two years with one retake attempt of any or all sections. 4. Completion with a minimum grade of 2.0 or C the following courses or their equivalent from an accredited institution: BIOL 2401, BIOL 2402, ENGL 1301, PSYC 2301, PSYC 2314. No student will be admitted to the ADN programs if he/she has failed two attempts at BIOL 2401, BIOL 2402, BIOL 2420, HPRS 2300, HPRS 2301. B. Cumulative GPA for transferring credits of 3.0 or above on 4.0 scale. C. Two professionals letter of references (non-family members). D. Applicant essay scored by program director or designee. E. Applicant must pass a drug screen (Board of Nursing 213.29 Criteria and Procedure Regarding Intemperate Use and Lack of Fitness in Eligibility and Disciplinary Matters).

F. Applicant background check must meet the Board of Nursing 213.28 criteria regarding Licensure of Person with Criminal Offenses. Minor criminal offenses (e.g., Class C misdemeanor) will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Decision of the ADN Program Director is final. G. Interview with ADN program director or designee. H. If all requirements are met, then the completed admissions packet will be forward to Nursing Admission Committee for a panel interview. The committee is currently comprised of the ADN Program Director, RN, MSN; an ADN faculty member, RN, MSN; the LRC Manager, MLIS; the Student Services Manager, MA; and the corporate Associate Vice President of Accreditation, RN, MS.
