Montage
Description:
The project introduction says You are in charge of creating a new and fresh inspirational poster montage using a composite of images and type. I thought about this and decided to do it on something important to me. God is important to me and there is so much that we need to be doing everyday and I figured that I should do some sort of religious montage.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02 Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant message Learn to blend images together gradually, using masks. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements. Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image ( Apply typography principles Select good quality images.

Process:

I originally had picked out a picture of the San Diego temple, but it really made it hard and unusual to put any flow into the text and added pictures so I changed to the Rexburg temple. After getting the picture, I began to play around with the saturation, hue, and color of the picture. Once I found something that I liked, I looked through different textures that I could overlay on the picture of the temple. I came across one that was called abstract blue. I liked the way it looked and decided to use it. Finally with the text, I thought that an outer glow would look good going with the temple. After that it was just playing with the position of the text.

Logos
Description:
Three logo variations for the same company. This is a logo for a made up law firm that would have been for my brother and I, hence the Bullough and Bullough.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02 Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:
Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use your previous designs. Use only the tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fab flares, symbols, etc.. No photos or auto live-tracing. You may use an image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/pencil, but delete the image before submitting.) Gather opinions from at least ten outside sources about which logo appeals most to them.

Process:

I originally started with a Restaurant, The Bullough Brothers Barbaque and Grill, but that wasnt working out so well so I switched to a law firm. I started by picking out the color schemes that I wanted and then I worked from there playing with different shapes and fonts.

Business Card
Description:
This project went together with the letterhead. I had to create a logo that I hadnt previously used and apply it to a business card and stationary that I made.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02 Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Use The basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign. Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or use your previous designs. (Dont use photos or live trace in your new logo) Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Use your new logo to design two stationery items with consistent design. (Photos are okay on stationery.) Apply typography rules keeping small copy. Learning to keep thing simple by having watermarks and drop shadows light and white space. Applying contact information: Include name, address, phone, and email on each piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone #; No parentheses/ hyphens.

Process:

I stuck with Illustrator and was able to get the letters all lined up how I wanted. After that I looked through textures until I could find one that looked somewhat similar to a white dress shirt. I used that on the background of both the business card and stationary. For the stationary. I brought the giant V in the background to an opacity of 5%.

Brochure
Description: Date:
4/1/14 A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02 Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. (Incorporate at least four quality images (Not including the logo). One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.) Write at least 250 words of original copy with at least three paragraphs. Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process:

This project was a fairly challenging one for me. I started this project several different times but could not figure out a format that I was comfortable with. I originally made the Sock it to me logo that I have now, but I was not happy with it and spent a lot of time going back and trying to make a new logo. I eventually ditched the new logo idea and stuck with the sock logo. I used the same type of brochure that we used in the Project 8 activity that we did. I liked the idea of being able to have some of the inside also be on the outside. I played with several different shapes and played with the pen tool a lot. I eventually came up with what I have now.

Flier
Description:
One of our first projects, an intro to the adobe software. This is a flier that is to be used to promote a graduate leadership conference for students who have recently graduated. Black & White promotional flier to promote a graduate leadership conference.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02 Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact.

Process:

The process was not an easy one. Being my first real project in the world of visual media I started with some sketches. Once I finished my sketches I played around using Adobe InDesign to see what I could do. I have never used the program before and was fairly lost. After some work the above flier is what I was able to come up with. Not bad for my first time using the program and being new to visual media, but there is much room for improvement.

Event Ad
Description:
This ad is to promote a fundraiser put together by the Yellowstone Wildlife Preservation and the proceeds will benefit the Hungry Animals of America Association. The names of the benefactor and the sponsor are of course made up. This project was to grow in understanding of limited program use, being limited to Word, and how to still create a flier.

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word Epson Scanner

Objectives:

To better understand image sizing and comprehend how pixels and inches work together. Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience. Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.

Process:

I used Word design features to create the ad.weights for simplicity. I was surprised at how much I could do with the hidden design features of Microsoft Word. Now I know that I could use it in a pinch.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02 Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:
Samsung Camera Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills. Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.) Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout. Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all four sides.

Process:

I love ultimate frisbee. With all of the snow outside, most people dont want to play. I still would love to. I have a blue frisbee and it got me thinking that I could do a photo with some cool colors for my color scheme. That lead me to the blue monochromatic color scheme. I tried to draw out the blues in the photo and use the color drop tool to pick out colors from the color wheel that would best meet my photo.

Web Page
Description:
I had decided to do a business that sells ties. The idea came to me when playing around with letters and pictures and trying to come up with a new logo. I found out that I could make the letter V into a tie and then played with words from there. The idea behind this assignment was that I create a webpage that gives a description about the business.

Comm 130 Section 05 Caryn Esplin TextWrangler Adobe Photoshop

Program(s)/Tools: Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300 500 pixels. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale for colors, appeal to target audience, design skills, etc,) Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. (Use TextWrangler (Macintosh) or NotePad++ (Windows))

Process:

I stuck with Illustrator and was able to get the letters all lined up how I wanted. After that I looked through textures until I could find one that looked somewhat similar to a white dress shirt. I didnt quite come up with one that resembled a normal white dress shirt, but I do like the texture that I found and used. When receiving critique on my draft. Brother Judkins, one of my teachers, had the idea to use a bunch of ties in the background. He even helped me find an image that I could use. What a good guy! I cropped the image to focus solely on the ties and then I added that into the CCS.
