This feature discusses the differences between aquatics feeds and common feeds, the technical features
involved in aquatic feed processing, the key machinery used and the application and characteristics of the
Zhengchang double-shaft differential diameter conditioner (DDC) in the production of aquatics feed.
T
he technical design of a
feed manufacturing facility
depends in part on the
supply, variety and type of
raw material received, the brands and
quantity of feed produced and the
facility’s development plan over the
next five to 10 years.
Investment costs, production costs and
management costs will all have to be taken
into consideration, as each plant will have to
generate a profit.
The Zhengchang Group of China has
researched its customer base and has col-
lected information on factory design that
meets the manufacturers’ profit needs.
Fundamental differences
As the aquatic animals are usually small,
with short alimentary tracts, the feed for
aquatic feed should be smaller than that for
livestock in order to improve digestion.
In China, the size of aquatics feed are
required as follows:
Common fish feed: 40 mesh;
Shrimp feed: 80 mesh (rate: 90-92 percent);
Extruded fish feed: 80 mesh (rate: 90 percent)
In addition, the protein content in chicken
and pig feed is less than 20 percent while that
in aquatic feed is normally 30-40 percent.
As for eel and turtle feed, it is even as
high as 65-70 percent.
Moreover, there is high demand on the
quality of protein used. Animal protein,
although more digestible and better in quan-
tity, is rather rare. As a result, the Zhengchang
Group has developed fine grinder in the range
of SFSP138*50E which can grind corn and
cakes in order to replace fishmeal.

Aqua feed should be able to stay stable in
water for two to three hours before being
ingested by aquatic animals. Feed with higher
stability is harder to be digested. Moreover,
the feed should be taintless. The aquatic
cultivation is getting more ecological; it is of
great significance to protect the environment
in which we grow our aquatic animals.
Make sure there is no cross contamina-
tion. It is better to separate the production
of shrimp and eels feeds from other feed
for fear of cross contamination.
The application of the DDC
With decades of experience in scien-
tific research and production, Zhengchang
Group has combined differential diameter
conditioner with single layer conditioner.
With this technology, feed can be better
cooked and capacity improved. Moreover,
the feed has better quality and higher water
durability and can be easily digested by
shrimp for example.
1. The feed can be
sufficiently cooked
Zhengchang’s double-shaft differential
diameter conditioner, also known as the
DDC, has been developed on basis of
single-shaft paddle conditioner. It is welded
by two semicircles of different radius. Inside
the shell are two stirring shafts rotating at
different speed. Steam inlet and liquid inlet
are equipped in middle of the shell.
As the two shafts rotate at different
speed in opposite direction, the power and
liquid tossed upward by the stirring shaft
form convention with steam. The powder is
then conveyed forward by the paddle with

Zhengchang’s DDC is usually three
metres long, which can be extended on
customer request. The conditioning time
can be limited between dozens of seconds
to 240 seconds and the curing degree can
reach 50-60 percent. With the one-layer
jacket conditioner, it can achieve a curing
degree between 70 to 80 percent.
