Qualities of Believers (Muslims) Revised (260)

(Qualties of Believers (Muslim
T he ideal Muslims in Islm are those who possess the characteristics or qualities of believers as def ined in
the Qurn and the Sunnah. T he true Islmic personality of believing Muslims, as def ined in the Qurn and
the Sunnah, embraces their total beings. T his covers their relations to their Rabb (Only Cherisher and
Sustainer), to themselves, to their respective f amilies (parents, spouses and children), to their relatives,
.neighbors and f riends, to their respective communities, as well as to the society as a whole
As much as possible, we Muslims must strive to attain total personality development f or the pleasure of
Allh the Almighty so that we attain ultimate rewards and success. In order to be rewarded, we must work
f or our total personality development in accordance with the Qurn and the Sunnah. It is a must that we
:obey Allh and His Messenger (S.A.W). Allh the Most High commands us
! 33
()
O you who believe! Obey Allh, and obey the Messenger (Muhammad) and render not vain your deeds.
((Muhammad 47:33
:In an authentic Hdth we read that the Prophet (SAWS) himself said
Abu Hurairah R.A. narrated that Allhs Messenger SAWS said, I have been sent (as a Messenger) in the
(best of all generations of Adams of f spring since the Creation. (Bukhri 4/757
As Muslims, we must strive to develop our personality by having the best manners and character as def ined
in the Qurn and the Sunnah. T he reason f or this is when we develop and excel in our Islmic personality,
we become among the righteous believers who will attain the ultimate success in the eternal world to come.
.Allh promises the believers and those who do righteous deeds everlasting reward, which is Paradise
In addition to the above Qurnic Ayt, are the f ollowing Ahdth, which should inspire us more to spend our
:time wisely (and not to waste it) to developing our character f or the pleasure of Allh
Abdullah Bin Amr (R.A.) narrated that Allhs Messenger SAWS said, T he best amongst you are those
(who have the best manners and haracter. (Bukhri 4/759
Abdur Rahman Bin Ghanam and Asma Bint Yazid narrated that the Prophet SAWS said, T he best servants
of Allh are those who, when they are seen, cause Allh to be remembered. T he worst servants of Allh are
those who go about slandering, who separate f riends, and seek to distress the upright. (Tirmidhi 4871 and
(Ahmad
We Muslims must f ollow the Messenger Allh SAWS who has the best personality and who calls people to
Islm. We must f ollow the Prophet SAWS because by doing so, we please Allh the Almighty and earn His
ultimate reward. We must work hard to f ollow the Prophet SAWS whose mission is to convey the Message
of Islm. Let us help one another in enjoining what is right and f orbidding what is wrong. T he Almighty not
only praises those Muslims (men and women) who enjoin what is right and f orbid what is wrong but also
.promises His Mercy to them
Certainly, it is righteousness to develop our personality and be ef f ective Dut based on the Qurn and the
Sunnah by enjoining what is right and f orbidding what is wrong. We Muslims must work f or righteous deeds
especially through ef f ective speeches in conveying the Message of Islm so that we will be among those
.whom Allh will admit in Paradise
Ab Hurairah R.A. narrated: I said O Allhs Messenger! Who will be the luckiest person who will gain your
intercession on the day of Resurrection? Allhs Messenger SAWS said: O Ab Hurairah! I have thought
that none will ask me about it bef ore you, as I know your eagerness to (learn) the Hdth. T he luckiest
person who will have my intercession on the Day of Resurrection will be one who said sincerely f rom (the
(bottom of ) his heart, L ilaha illa Allh. (None has the right to be worshipped but Allh.). (Bukhri 1/ 98
Ab Hurairah R.A. (or Ab Said Al Khudri) narrated that Allhs Messenger SAWS remarked, I bear

testimony that there is no god but Allh and I am the Messenger of Allh. T he man who meets his Rabb
(without harboring any doubt about these two (truths) will never be kept away f rom Paradise. (Muslim 42
Abdullh bin Masd R.A. narrated: I asked the Prophet SAWS , Which deed is dearest to Allh? He replied,
To of f er the Salt (prayers) at their early f ixed times. I asked, What is the next (in goodness)? He
replied, To be good and dutif ul to your parents. I again asked, What is the next (in goodness)? He
(replied, To participate in Jihd (religious f ighting) in Allhs cause. (Bukhri 1/505
Abu Qatada ibn RabI R.A. narrated that the Prophet SAWS said: Allh , the Exalted said: I made f ive times
prayers obligatory on your people, and I took a guarantee that if anyone observes them regularly at their
times, I shall admit him to Paradise; if anyone does not of f er them regularly, there is no such guarantee of
(Mine f or him. (Abu Dawud 430
T he f oundation of Deen Islam is Iman (Faith) , if it is f irm then Salat (Prayers), Fasts during month of
Ramdan, Z akat, perf orming pilgrimage to Makkah (Hajj) are all based on Iman. If it isweak then all rituals are
not acceptable. For i.g. if the f oundation of multy story building is f irm and solid then all the f loors of the
.building are f irm
Belief (Faith) : Narrated Ibn Umar R.A. ,Allahs Messenger SAWS said, Islam is based on (the f ollowing) f ive
((principals
To testif y that La ilaha illallaha wa anna Muhammad-ar-Rasul Allah (none has the right to be worshipped
.but Allah and that Muhammad SAWS is the Messenger of Allah
.(Iqamat-as-Salat (to perf orm the (compulsary congregational) Salat (Prayers
To pay Z akat : A certain f ixed proportion of the wealth and every kind of the property liable to Z akat of a
Muslim to be paid yearly f or the benef it of the poor in the Muslim community. T he payment of Z akat is
obligatory as it is one of the f ive pillars of Islam. Z akat is the major economic means f or establishing social
.justice and leading the Muslim society to prosperity and security
.To observe Saum (Fasts) according to Islamic teachings during the month of Ramdan
(To perf orm Hajj (i.e. pilgrimage to Makkah
Narrated Abu Hurairah R.A. that, the Prophet SAWS said, Faith (belief ) consists of more than sixty subdivisions or branches (i.e. parts). And Al-Haya (this term Al-Haya covers a large number of concepts which
are to be taken together; amongst them are self -respect, modesty, bashf ulness and honor etc) is a part of
[Faith (Belief ).[Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol.1, Hadith No.9
?T he Belief . What is Belief and its Characteristics
On the authority of Umar bin Al-Khattab R.A. , who said, One day while we were sitting with the Messenger
of Allah SAWS, there appeared bef ore us a man whose clothes were exceedingly white and whose hair was
exceedingly black; no signs of journeying were seen on him and none of us knew him. He walked up and sat
down by the Prophet SAWS., resting his knees against the Prophets knees and placing the palms of his
hands on the Prophets thighs, he said: O Muhammad, tell me about Islam. T he Messenger of Allah SAWS
said: Islam is to testif y that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; to perf orm
the prayers; to pay the Z akat (alms), to f ast in Ramdan, and to make the pilgrimage to the House (Makkah)
if you are able to do so. He said: You have spoken rightly, and we were amazed at him f or f irst asking the
Prophet and then saying that he had spoken rightly. He said: T hen tell me about Faith. T he Prophet
answered: It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day, and to believe
in divine destiny, both good and the evil thereof . He said: You have spoken rightly. He f urther asked: T hen
tell me about Ihsan (the perf ect worship). T he Prophet answered: It is to worship Allah as though you are
seeing Him, and while you see Him not yet truly, He sees you. He said: T hen tell me about the Hour. T he
Prophet answered: T he one questioned about it knows no better than the questioner. He said: T hen tell me
about its signs. T he Prophet answered: A time will come when children will have so little respect f or their
mothers. You will also see the baref ooted, naked, destitute herdsmen competing in constructing lof ty
buildings. T hen he lef t in a hurry, and I stayed f or a time. T hen the Prophet said, O Umar, do you know who
the questioner was? I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: It was Jibrael, who came to you to
[teach you your religion. [Muslim
a)Narrated Abu Hurairah R.A., T he Prophet SAWS said, Religion is very easy and whoever overburdens)
himself in his religion will not be able to continue in that way. So you should not be extremists, but try to be
near to perf ection and receive the good tidings that you will be rewarded; and gain strength by of f ering the
Salat (prayers) in the mornings, af ternoons, and during the last hours of the nights.[Sahih Al-Bukhari ,

[Vol.1, Chapter 29, Hadith No.39

.(b) Dif f erence between believer and disbeliever is abandoning of Salat (prayer)
c) Umar bin Al-Khattab R.A. narrated, I heard Allhs Messenger SAWS saying, T he reward of deeds)
depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended.
((Bukhri 1/1 and Muslim 3/ 4692
d) It was narrated that the Prophet SAWS said: All my f ollowers will enter Paradise except those who)
ref use T hey said, O Allhs Messenger! Who will ref use? He said, Whoever obeys me will enter Paradise,
(and whoever disobeys me is the one who ref uses (to enter it). (Bukhri 9/384
From the above divine injunction, the criteria f or personality development must be based on the Qurn and
the Sunnah. Prophet Muhammad SAWS Allhs Messenger to the whole humanity, possesses an exalted
standard of character (i.e., sublime morals) (Qurn Al-Qalam 68:4) and is an excellent example f or us to
:f ollow. Allh the Almighty tells us that His Messenger (SAWS) is the best model f or us to f ollow. He says
Indeed in the Messenger of Allh (Muhammad SAWS ) you have an excellent example to f ollow f or him who
(hopes in (meeting with) Allh and the Last Day, and remembers Allh much. (Al-Ahzab 33:21
Narrated Abu Hurairah R.A. , the Prophet SAWS said, An adulterrer at the ime he is commiting illegal sexual
act is not a believer, and a person at the time of drinking an alcholic drink is not a believer, and a thief at the
time of stealing is not a believer. Abu Hurairah R.A. added in another narration: And he who robs, while the
people are lookingg at him is not a believer at the time he is robbing (taking something illegally by
[f orce).[Sahih Al-Bukhari Chapter 22-B, Hadih No.36
Narrated Abdullah bin Amr R.A., the Prophet SAWS said, A Muslim is the one who avoids harming Muslim
with his tongue and hands. And a Muhajir (emigrant) is the one who gives up (abandons) all what Allah has
[f orbidden.[Sahih Al-Bukhari , Chapter 4, Hadith No.10
Narrated Abu Hurairah R.A. , the Allahs Messenger SAWS said, By Him in Whose Hands my lif e is, none of
you will have Faith till he loves me more than his f ather and children.[Sahih Al-Bukhari Chapter 8, Hadith
[No.14
Narrated Anas R.A., the Prophet SAWS said, Whoever possesses the f ollowing qualities will have the
.sweetness (delight) of Faith
.T he one whom Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad SAWS) becomes dearer than anything else
Who hates to revert to atheism (disbelief ) as he hates to be thrown into the Fire.[Sahih Al-Bukhari,
[Chapter 9, Hadith No.16
:[Tauhid Al-Uluhiyyah [Oneness of the Worship Of Allah
Allah mentioned His Oneness in divinity and stated that He has f avored His servants by bringing them to
lif e af ter they did not exist. He also surrounded them with blessings, both hidden and apparent. He made
.the earth a resting place f or them, just like the bed, stable with the f irm mountains
Allah is the Creator, the Sustainer, the Owner and Provider of this lif e, all that is in and on it. Hence, He
alone deserves to be worshipped, and no one and nothing is to be associated with Him. T his is why Allah
T hen do not set up rivals unto Allah (in worship) while you know (that He Alone ,said
[has the right to be worshipped). [Al-Baqrah 2:22
Ibn Masud R.A. said, I said to the Messenger of Allah SAWS, Which evil deed is the worst with Allah. He
[said, To take an equal with Allah, while He alone created you. [Fath Al-Bari 8:350 and Muslim 1:90
Also Muadh R.A. narrated the Prophets statement, Do you know Allahs right on His servants? T hey must
worship Him alone and ref rain f rom associating anything with Him in worship.[Fath al-Bari 13:359 and
[Muslim 1:59
In another Hadith states, None of you should say, What Allah and so-and-so person wills. Rather, let him
say, What Allah wills, and then what so-and-so person will. [Ahmad 5:384,394,398] T he Hadith with T he
Same Meaning: Imam Ahmad narrated that Al-Harith Al-Ashari R.A. said that the Prophet of Allah SAWS said,
Allah commanded Yahya bin Z akriya to implement f ive commands and to order the Children of Israel to
implement them, but Yahya was slow in carrying out these commands. Isa said to Yahya, You were ordered
to implement f ive commands and to order the Children of Israel to implement them. So either order or I will
do it. Yahya said, My brother! I f ear that if you do it bef ore me, I will be punished f or the earth will be
shaken under my f eet. Hence, Yahya bin Z akariya called the Children of Israel to Bayt Al-Maqdis
(Jerusalem), until they f illed the Masjid. He sat on the balcony, thanked Allah and praised Him and then said,
Allah ordered me to implement f ive commandments and that I should order you to adhere to them. T he f irst
is that you worship Allah alone and not associate any with Him. T he example of this command is the

example of a man who bought a servant f rom his money with paper or gold. T he servant started to work
f or the master, but was paying the prof its to another person. Who among you would like his servant to do
that? Allah created you and sustains you. T heref ore, worship Him alone and do not associate anything with
Him. I also command you to pray, f or Allah directs His Face towards His servants f ace, as long as the
servant does not turn away. So when you pray, do not turn your heads to and f ro. I also command you to
f ast. T he example of it is the example of a man in a group of men and he has some musk wrapped in a
piece of cloth, and consequently, the entire group smells the scent of the wrapped musk. Verily, the odour
of the mouth of a f asting person is better bef ore Allah than the scent of musk. I also command you to give
charity. T he example of this is the example of a man who was captured by the enemy. T hey tied his hands
to his neck and brought him f orth to cut of f his neck. He said to them, Can I pay a ransom f or myself ? He
kept ransoming himself with small and large amounts until he liberated himself . I also command you to
always remember Allah. T he example of this deed is that of a man who the enemy is tirelessly pursuing. He
takes ref uge in a f ortif ied f ort. When the servant remembers Allah, he will be restoring to the best ref uge
.f rom Satan
Al-Harith then narrated that the Messenger of Allah SAWS said, And I order you with f ive commandments
that Allah has ordered me. Stick to the Jamaah (community of the f aithf ul), listen and obey (your leaders)
and perf orm Hijrah (migration) and Jihad f or the sake of Allah, Whoever abandons the Jamaah, even the
distance of a hand span, will have removed the tie of Islam f rom his neck, unless he returns. Whoever uses
the slogans of Jahiliyah (the pre-Islamic period of ignorance) he will be among those kneeling in Jahannam
(Hell-Fire). T hey said, O Messenger of Allah! Even if he prays and f asts? He said, Even if he prays f asts
and claims to be Muslim. So call the Muslims with their names that Allah has called them: T he Muslims, the
[believing servants of Allah.[ Ahmad 4:130
