BGB2023/BAGB2023: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS GROUP PROJECT

To consumers like you and me, watching movies can be a relief to stress, a way to kill a boring weekend or a leisure activity with friends and family. To studios like Disney, Warner Brothers, or TriStar however, movies are products that determine their profit, loss and survival. According to Forbes magazine, in year 2012 revenues generated from box office films in USA was $10.8 billion while the international box office revenue was $23.1 billion. Although the USAs domestic film market is big, the level of competition within the industry is also very stiff. Being able to tap into the global market therefore is crucial for USA-based film producers. This was evident for example in the case of Men in Black 3 which mad de approximately $177 million in the USA but collected $622 million worldwide. Nonetheless not all Hollywood movies are internationally successful. Your task is to uncover the recipe of success of a Hollywood movie in a video documentary. The details of your assignment are as outlined below:

Tasks: a) Choose an internationally successful Hollywood movie. The movie must be released in year 2013. b) Make a 15 to 30 minutes documentary of the movie. There is no specific format to the documentary but it has to contain the following: i. Some statistics on film industry (e.g. growth rate, revenue trend, trend in salary of actors/actresses). ii. Some statistics of the chosen film (e.g. cost of production, revenue in domestic market and international revenue). iii. Challenges that the movie had to overcome internationally and in Malaysia specifically. iv. International success factors (including how it countered the challenges identified above). v. All members of your team must be featured in the documentary.

Your documentary will be evaluated as follow: Items Comprehensiveness of content Creativity Overall flow of the documentary Videos audio visual quality Projection of teamwork TOTAL % Marks 20 8 4 5 3 40 25*

*Up-close and Personal Session If your documentary does not meet the minimum expectations of the instructor, your group will be called for an up-close & personal session. This interview session is meant to clarify some details on the business that you have analyzed but not included in your video documentary. Questions can also be asked regarding the making of the documentary. Should your group be called for the session, the documentary will only carry 15% of the grade and the interview session will carry the remaining 10%

Team management and peer evaluation (5%) Each team should consist of four or five members only. Every group is required to minute their group meetings and keep a record of their group activity. Every group has the right to terminate the membership of any member that is not performing his/her tasks and duties after due process has been carried out. To avoid free rider, 5% of your group project is dedicated to peer evaluation. Each of you must fill in the form available in Appendix A and submit your complete form in a sealed envelop to your team leader. The team leader must hand over the envelopes collected from all team members to the lecturer after the group has submitted its documentary video. Note that your lecturer reserves the right to moderate the marks you give to your teammates if your documentary and interview scores are less than 50% of the designated percentages. Logically, if all of you commit yourself to doing the assignment well, the efforts will be reflected in the scores of both positively.

Deadlines The draft/storyboard of your documentary must be submitted no later than July 5th, 2013* The complete documentary must either be burnt into a CD and submitted to your lecturer or uploaded in You Tube and the link be made available to the lecturer no later than July 24th, 2013** **For regional centre students, please note that your lecturer reserves the right to amend the deadlines.
