Sports, Fitness and Health Committee Proposal

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.-World Health Organization

I. Rationale We have always been given the notion that in order to have a successful life, one needs to invest much on his mind. Its now a fact that we also need a healthy body in order to have a healthy mind though most of the time our resources and opportunities dont allow us to attain these. Ways to a healthy life should include sports participation, fitness, and proper nutrition. There should be more opportunities for the UP community to actively participate in activities that promote the improvement of their health. Students should be empowered and recognize the importance of having a healthy and active lifestyle.

II. Vision The SPOFIH Committee aims to promote health and wellness as an integral part of human development and lifestyle among the members of the UP community through sports, fitness and proper nutrition. III. Mission -To entice the UP students to include physical activities as part of their own lifestyle -To uphold the social relevance of sports and its participants -To recognize the rights of student-athletes in the university -To inform the community about proper diet and good nutrition through proper information dissemination free from hear say and non-scientific methods -To invest on having a balance of healthy mind and body

IV. Committee Structure a. SPOFIH Chairperson -head the Sports, Fitness and Health Committee -oversee all the members and activities of the committee -preside over all the meetings of the committee initiate the communication amongst the sports ambassadors in the university b. Secretary will be in charge of taking down the minutes in every official meeting of the committee -coordinate with the Secretary of the USC for the documents and papers of the committee c. Finance and Marketing Head -in charge of making financial statements for the committee together with the Chairperson -coordinate with the Business Manager of the USC for sponsorships and marketing concerns d. Publicity and Documentations Head -in charge of making publicity materials -in charge of post-event documentations - coordinate with the Public Information Officer of the USC for publication concerns e. Research and Development Head -in charge of researching for health, sports, fitness and nutrition news and updates - in charge of looking for contacts and creating ties among the different sports organizations and health groups outside the university f. Sports Ambassador Director -in charge of coordinating with the assigned Sports Ambassadors of the different local councils in the university -in charge of getting volunteers and logistical aid for the events of the committee

V. Specific Plans of Action -Victory for Varsity (VIVA)- an advocacy-centered project for our varsity students to voice out the different issues and concerns inside their respective teams and sports. This project will include campaigns that will tackle issues like sexual harassment (training and tie-up with gender committee), SIN tax, AIDS law reform (lower age limit for testing), Athletes Rights Code, addition of healthy food choices in the university, increase in the budget for sports and allowance for student-athletes. VIVA will also be in charge of the regular check up on our varsity teams and their financial reports as well as handing out evaluation forms about the teams coaching staff and team managers. -Health and Fitness Awareness Month- a month that will focus on improving the wellness of the UP community through information dissemination about proper nutrition and fitness activities. This month will also recognize the importance of proper diet and exercise for the different sectors of the UP community including the faculty, staff and students. This month will be highlighted by four events that will be opened by the activity called Walk the Talk. Other events will include Fit and Fab Isko, Fit and Fresh Zumba Party, First Aid Trainng, Health Mission and the results of the Biggest Body Fat Loser: UPD. -Walk the Talk- an awareness walk with celebrities and health ambassadors in the country around the academic oval to promote the importance of wellness and health. There will be nutritional booths and fitness exams given throughout the event as well. -Fit and Fresh Zumba Party- an exclusive Zumba party that will focus on the health of our freshmen. This party will also include a fashion show to showcase and a few healthy food booths. -Health Mission- a health mission for the whole UP community that will provide medical, dental and nutritional check-ups as well as information and tips about the right exercise program to cater to ones goals and current fitness level. -First Aid Training- a first aid seminar in partnership with the health organizations in the university that will be represented by varsity teams and university-wide organizations to disseminate in their respective groups. -Biggest Body Fat Loser: UPD- a competition that promotes weight loss and healthy living. Each college will send a student representative to take on the challenge of participating in a training program that aims to decrease ones body fat percentage in a span of 2 months. Whoever loses the most amount of body fat will win the competition. -Fit and Fab Isko- an initiative to consult the communities living in the dormitories inside the campus through fitness and health check-ups.

-Around the U- a series of collaborations with the different colleges of the university that will happen all throughout the academic year and will focus on how sports, fitness and good health can affect their respective fields. -bUPey- a collaboration with the CHE that will promote the importance of proper nutrition and a balanced diet through a food bazaar. A part of the proceeds of the bazaar will go to the funds of our varsity teams for food. -SAYAWitan- a collaboration with the CMu that will feature a fund-raising concert composed of the different music and dance groups in the university. The proceeds of the concert will aid the dance areas and music equipments of the involved organizations. -O-FORTUNE-edad- a business forum on how CHK students can maximize profit in sports through marketing and financial strategies at the same time be familiar with the different sport companies and organizations around the country. -Sports, Science and the Arts- a collaboration with the CS, CHK and FA in a university-wide exhibit of art pieces and scientific materials and facts with sports and health as the primary subject. -Sports UPdate- an umbrella project with the Mass Media Committee thats main initiative is to provide a regular update on the competitions and involvements of our varsity teams including the team schedules through various social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Sports UPdate will also create more opportunities for students to avail of UAAP tickets and for live TV coverage of the games through DZUP, play-by-play tweets and by setting up projectors around the campus. Sports UPdate will also give a primer on the different PE classes that are offered per semester as well as the availability of the slots. This will also be an avenue for the community to be familiar with the different sports in the university through the display of the history and accomplishments of the different UPD varsity teams in the social media pages. -League of Sport Leaders in UP- a group that will compose of varsity team captains and sport organization representatives in the university. It aims for the advancement of student-athlete rights and promote their overall welfare. It also aims to recognize the importance of health in the different organizations around UP at the same time creating camaraderie and cooperation within the involved groups. The LSL will also include a leadership training seminar at the start of the year as well as conduct regular meetings and evaluation per semester. -Time-Out! an opportunity for CHK students and UP varsity athletes to share their knowledge about sports and fitness to the communities outside the university through free sports and fitness clinics.

-Self Defense- a series of workshops about the different martial arts in the country to help increase the level of security in the campus. Aside from teaching MMA, there will also be a talk about the security of the campus and tips on having a safe stay in the campus. -Diliman Games 2015- a series of sport competitions against the different colleges of the university; it will include sports like basketball, football and volleyball. The Games will be opened by the passing of the torch ceremonies and oath taking amongst the participants and then culminated by the Diliman Bonfire at the end of the season. Schedules will be posted around the university as well as regular updates through the Sports UPdate accounts. -Diliman Bonfire the culminating night for the Diliman Games that aims to recognize the athletes, varsities and sport organizations of the university through awards, presentations and food. It hopes to instill school spirit and UP pride among the members of the UP community.
