Section F: Appendix II

Flame Retardant A chemical added to insulation materials to make them less combustible, such as antimony trioxide (PVC) or alumina trihydrate or carbon black (XLPE). Also used to describe ame resistance FR Abbreviation for ame retardant, often used as a prex to further describe materials (i.e. FR-XLPE) Ground Wire A conductor in a transmission cable or line that is grounded Halogen Any of the elements Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine or Iodine that form group VII A of the periodic table. In cable insulation and jackets, Chlorine, Bromine or Fluorine are typically utilized as ame retardants. They have the undesirable effect of generating corrosive acid gas in the event of re. Helical Copper tape shield wrapped around cable core ICEA Insulated Cable Engineers Association IEEE Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers IEEE 383 ame testing requirements Insulation Non-conductive material usually surrounding or separating two or more conductive materials

Jacket A rubber or synthetic covering applied over primary insulation, braids, shields, cable components or over the cable itself kcmil A unit of conductor area in thousands of circular mils Longitudinal Shield - A tape shield, at or corrugated (LC), applied longitudinally with the axis of the core being shielded, as opposed to Helical or spiral wrapped core LSZH Low Smoke Zero Halogen compound for insulation and/or Jacketing materials. Solonon Southwire. Available in thermoplastic or thermoset. Metering Cable Flexible cables predominantly used in utility substations for metering applications Mil A unit used in measuring diameter of a wire or thickness of insulation over a conductor; one-one thousandth of an inch (.001) MTW - Machine tool wire Multiconductor More than one insulated conductor within a single cable complex NEMA National Electrical Manufacturers Association Nominal The preferred size or weight that is specied or indicated for a certain cable element Non-hygroscopic Binders and/or tapes used in cables that are non-absorbing or attracting moisture from the air
