Unit 10: Going shopping

Day four: Buying clothes


Objective Students will recognize and identify various numbers ranging from 0 to 9999 by calling out specific numbers to the teacher. Students will create a story involving several friends going shopping for clothes. Setting the stage (2 minutes) Teacher projects the Numbers Review grid on the screen in the front of the room and leads students in locating recognizing and identifying a specific number on the grid. Teacher encourages students to call out the number and rewards outstanding students with a !"ravo ! !That#s right ! !$reat%! or any other compliment appropriate to the culture of their first language &'(). Input (35 minutes) Teacher leads students in creating a story about two friends who meet to go together to a clothing store to shop for school clothes. Teacher helps students build story by as*ing +uestions that reinforce the information. Students volunteer names of the two friends name of the store where these friends will meet what types of clothing the friends will loo* at what comments the friends will ma*e about the various items of clothing the prices of the items of clothing and the final choices the friends will ma*e concerning their purchase. ,uestions that !recycle! the students# suggestions include yes-no either-or who-what-where-when-why. Teacher writes down new vocabulary in the target language &T')and the students# first language &'() on the board. Teacher does not spea* the '( but points to the '( translation whenever a T' vocabulary word is spo*en. This assures student comprehension. The constant recycling of information with the +uestions assures continual student involvement and participation. .n the /odel below the information in italics is named by students in the class. Teacher ma*es suggestions and students choose. 0r students are encouraged to ma*e their own suggestions1 the funnier the more memorable% /odel of a story 2riend 3 calls up 2riend " on telephone or sends te4t message to suggest they go shopping for clothes. 2riend 3 suggests a particular store as a meeting place and a particular time to meet. 2riends meet and start circulating around the store. 2riend 3 sees a rac* of jeans and both friends head in that direction. 2riend " pic*s out a pair of jeans and comments in a positive way. 2riend 3 ma*es a different positive comment. 2riend " finds a sales person and as*s for the price. Sales person gives a very e4pensive price.

2riend 3 states this is too e4pensive. "oth friends decide not to loo* for jeans anymore. 2riend 3 sees a rac* of tee5shirts and both friends go there. 2riend 3 pic*s out two shirts of different colors and shows them to 2riend ". 2riend 3 as*s 2riend " which shirt he or she prefers and why. 2riend " answers. "oth friends loo* for a sales person. None is in sight% 2riend 3 starts to complain. 6e or she is upset that no sales person is available. 2riend 3 finds a sales person and as*s the price of both shirts. Sales person gives prices. 2riend " ma*es a negative comment about the price of one of the shirts. 2riend 3 ma*es a positive comment about the more e4pensive shirt. 2riend 3 decides to buy the more e4pensive shirt. "oth friends leave the store and decide to go to a caf7 for an afternoon snac*. 3t the caf7 they see another teenager wearing e4actly the same tee5shirt that 2riend 3 just bought. "oth friends laugh. They agree that the tee5shirt must be really popular. C osu!e (10 minutes) Students fill in a graphic organizer about the story they created. Teacher collects this wor*.
