CEIC2001 Assignment 1 Due in Assignment Box in School of Chemical Engineering before 10am on 27th of March.

Be sure that you have coversheet (you can down load this at website http://www.engineering.unsw.edu.au/chemical-engineering/student-forms). No late assignments will be accepted. Note the marks for the questions are out of 10 total for the assignment. This will be scaled in the calculations for the final marks. You need to show the workings and state the assumptions used in the problems. Assume density of water is 1000 kg/m3 and the viscosity of water is 0.001 kg/m s Assume that atmospheric pressure is 101.3 kPa. 1. 3 marks We have a large tank with a rectangular viewing window (2 m x 3 m) set at a 30o angle into the wall of the tank as shown. a) Determine the resultant force on the window if the tank is open to the atmosphere. b) Determine the position of the net resultant force (x and y). Specify the origin of the axis that you are using. Sketch the approximate position and direction of the resultant force on the window. c) What would the net resultant force on the window be if the tank is pressurized to 2 atmosphere gauge? d) If we have a narrow column containing 4m of oil (density 800 kg/m3) connected to the side of the tank (1 m from the bottom), what would be the level of the water in that column? e) How would the answer in part a) change if the window weighed 100 kg? (Hint: resolve the force from the weight in the direction opposing the resultant force)

2. 3 marks The flow behavior of sweet potato baby food was tested in a viscometer, resulting in a flow curve, (Figure 1) which was modeled using a Herschel-Bulkley model (Table 1)

a) b) c) d)

Is the food shear-thickening, Newtonian, or shear-thinning? Write a model that describes the flow behavior of the baby food at 35 C. Calculate the apparent viscosity at 35C at a shear rate of 10s-1. What is the effect of an increase in temperature on the flow behaviour and apparent viscosity of the baby food? Give reasons for your answer.

The food was also tested in a rheometer (Figure 2).

Figure 2. Frequency sweep showing the elastic , G!, viscous, G", moduli, and phase angle, ", for sweet potato puree based baby food. e) Describe the test that resulted in Figure 2? f) What does Figure 2 tell you about the properties of the baby food? Give reasons. 3. 2 marks We have a pipe bend shown below used to transport slurry (specific gravity of 1.3) 10 m up a hill. The pipe exit is open to the atmosphere where it discharges the slurry. a) b) If the inlet pressure is 1000 kPa (gauge) and outlet pressure is at atmospheric pressure, what would be the flowrate of a slurry? What are the forces (Rx and Ry) required to hold the bend in place? Ignore the weight of the pipe bend and the liquid in the bend.

Assume frictionless, incompressible, and steady flow. The diameter of the pipe is 10cm at the entrance and 5 cm at the exit. The entrance of pipe is 60o angle and the exit is at 45o angle.

4. 1 marks We have a coater with applies a film on both sides of a plate. The coater is 1mm above and below the plate and has a contact area of 1 meter x 0.3 meter on each side. The viscosity of the coating film is 100 times of water and is a Newtonian fluid. How much force would you estimate that we need to push the plates through the coating machine at a velocity of 1m/s?

5. 1 mark In class I showed an open U-shaped tube of water with a column of oil on one side. Calculate the height of the column of water on the left (the side with the 20 cm of oil) if there is 1 meter height of water on the right side. Assume the oil has the density of 800 kg/m3.
