Work gets under way at new Friars Walk


A GROUND-BREAKING ceremony will take place at the Newport city-centre Friars Walk site tomorrow at noon. The new complex will be built on a 390,000 sq ft (36,230 sq m) site which will include 32 shops, an eight-screen cinema, 11 family restaurants, a new 360-space car park and a redeveloped John Frost Square. Debenhams is set to be the developments anchor store and Next, Topshop, Cineworld, Nandos and Cosmo are among the businesses which have already committed to the 90 million retail and leisure scheme. According to developers from Queensbury Real Estate, at its peak the project will create work for 650 people.

Big names set to attend event


THE worlds leading users and suppliers of industrial control equipment will be heading for Newport next month. Top firms working in the fields of metals, bulk materials handling, paper, defence, nuclear, chemicals, oil and gas and water will be represented at the biennial event. Among companies already signed up for the free-to-attend event, on Tuesday, May 20, and Wednesday May 21, are engineering heavyweights such as Siemens, ABB, Rockwell Automation, IFM Electronic, Pepperl + Fuchs, Pilz and Bosch Rexroth. Event organiser Kath Lewis, of IAC Ltd, said: The biennial IAC event is South Wales only control systems exhibition. The two-day open day offers exhibitors and attendees an unrivalled platform to meet and do business with engineers, managers and key decision makers not just from the region but much further afield.
