NEVER CHECK EMAIL IN THE MORNING BY JULIE MORGENSTERN SUMMARY OF THE MAIN IDEAS This book is about self-organizing from inside out in an efficient and effective manner that guarantees maximum results. To be of great value to oneself, to the company one is working for (whether self-employment or paid employment), to ones family as well as to the society at large, there must be priority and boundary setting that assures work-life balance which does not sacrifice the value to be contributed the family, or to the society for the company one is working for. The book is also about time management. The ability to know what is to be done now and what is to be done later. It is about not been caught up in the trivial emergencies that only contribute little to the bottom-line but concentrating on issues that will either save or make money. To achieve maximum value creation, Julie gave some tips one of which is never check email in the morning in order not to be distracted from the important work of the day. Dedicate the first one or two hours of the day to important and value creation matters. Other tips include: mastering delegation; do not say yes when you are to say no; develop working and fruitful relationship with others; learn and adopt IT solutions to most activities that will facilitate greater value of effectiveness; avoid the nibblers (perfectionism, procrastination, interruption and meetings); improve on organisation and planning; prioritize (Paretos 80:20 principle might be handy here devote 80% of your time to activities that generate top 20% of your value ) and determine your critically important, value maximizing, activities. The books title is rather metaphorical than a rule. There might be some instances when email will be checked first in the morning. The lesson however, is that of self organizing approach of work that produces maximum results without jeopardizing personal, family and societal value.
